A word from Jannah
Legendary San Francisco Chef Yahya Salih is back with a new twist on some very old favorites. Combining traditional Mesopotamian dishes with California/Mediterranean influences Salih has put a new spin on some well established Middle Eastern dishes. Formerly Yaya cuisine, Jannah provides a modern and fresh atmosphere in which to enjoy the many creations of Salih. Combining his experience with California cooking pioneer Jeremiah Tower, with the traditional dishes of his native Iraq, Salih has carved a niche for himself as one of the premiere chefs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Salih has created the only restaurant in the city that replicates Mesopotamian cuisine.

The staff is super friendly and accomodating. We loved all the appetizers; Baba, Mama and Zuzu Ganoush. My entree was the veg dolmas and they were ok, my boyfriend had lamb kebabs and loved them. We will definitely return.

Great value for quality and size of portions, and pleasant atmosphere. Fatoosh salad is wonderful, easily shared by two persons. Perfectly cooked skewered marinated salmon and the lamb shank were delicious. These three dishes alone were a an oh so satisfying dinner for two people with large appetites.

Our group of six tried Jannah for Saturday dinner on a lark. The spreads were fantastic (especially the mama ganoush). The main plates were all tasty, though the veggie phyllo concoction was less interesting than its meaty counterparts. Only two other parties came in while we ate, so I hope the lunch scene is vibrant enough to keep Jannah open. I definitely plan to return.

The Mezza plate of three dips (baba ganoush, hummas, zuzu ganoush), tabouli, and pita is a real bargain, and must be shared lest it fill you up. This restaurant should be packed every night. Lunch is also really good, and highly recommended.

  • The hummus was more like library

The hummus was more like library paste than the real thing--flavorless, but probably not J's thing. Accompanied by a few good, small pitas and some odd rolls. Huge app serving of 5 v. tasty (warm) stuffed grape leaves. I really liked the feta-spinach stuffed phyllo; v. savory, v. generous serving, and surrounded by fresh vegetables and a somewhat rich, smooth, red bell pepper sauce. My friend enjoyed meat-fill grape leaves for a main course. We drank a $30 bottle of 15% alcohol Lebanese red wine--don't remember name, but think it was an '07. Quite enjoyable. Were too full for dessert. The place was doing no business on a Tuesday evening--deserves better. Allegedly same owner as now-closed Yaya's.

Frequently when I would take the #5 Fulton to USF, I would see this restaurant and think, some day, I must eat there. When I was looking for a place to dine with a long time friend, the description fit my requirements, so I made a reservation. Was I ever delighted. The house wine was delightful, as was the plate with pita and tabouli with babaganoush, hummus, and a carrot dip that was fabulous. The entree, eggplant stuffed with lamb, was also a healthy serving, which I enjoyed again for lunch the next day at home. Plenty of good food, conducive to conversation, and friendly service.

I decided to try Jannah when we had out of town guests coming. I don't usually like to take guests to a place I hadn't been to before, but we took a chance. This place is amazing!! The food was out of this world! Their menu is extensive, and they are also willing to make modifications. We took our four year old who wanted to add pickles to his Safeeha and they gladly accommodated. The table shared the pita and dip appetizer, and each dip we chose was delicious and the bread was warm and soft. We all loved our dinners (huge portions), but the winner was the combination dolmas which everybody loved. Awesome place, and when our son accidentally dropped his car behind the booth attached to the wall, they helped us pull it out and retreive it.

The food here is always good, if a bit pricey. The dining room seems to always be sparsely occupied, which can be a bit off-putting, but if you're in the neighborhood and looking for some tasty, fresh Mediterranean food it's good choice.

Excellent place for unique food. When it was Yaya's, I visited in the inner Sunset, Financial District, and on VanNess. I'm thrilled Yaya is back serving up his unique Mesopotamian (Middle Eastern) food. The Kuzi is exceptional, so is Salmon Tajine. A variety of dips for pita are outstanding, esp. the walnut and the carrot. Rice pudding also great. Kelecha good for appetizer or dessert. Unique flavor. If you like sweet with meat, go wild - it's perfect. If you don't, go wild with the fish dishes. The wait staff is attentive and friendly without being intrusive. Once we discovered Yaya was back in the city,we went twice in one week and will go often.

The food was different from any other mideastern restaurant we have eaten at which is always a plus. The appetizers were fantastic. I liked, didn't love my entree but my companion raved about his smoked trout. We dined early on a Saturday night so the place was empty. Don't know if it fills up. Service, of course, was excellent and prices very affordable.

Decided to try something new after a day at the Marin headlands. Was very happy we found this place- easy to drive to, parking was plentiful and free. Not super crowded on a Sunday night, a family, a couple and dome ransoms were also dining. Our waiter was attentive, courteous and explained the dish descriptions well. I normally don't eat lamb but the rack was melt of the bone and mild in flavor. Even my husbands chicken was juicy and the mint salad that it covered was light and flavorful. Dish size is huge and baklava is perfect. Come hungry, leave happy.

We really enjoyed our meal at Jannah. The food was excellent. The menu was creative with Mesopotamian cuisine as the inspiration but with a twist. The portions were large and the prices reasonable. Nice ambiance in the restaurant too. We were there on a Sunday night and it was quiet. Full bar and even a happy hour for those who like to drink. We will definitely tell all our friends about Jannah! It's a gem of a restaurant and worth visiting.

I am half Iraqi and this is the only place in town to find authentic Iraqi dolma, like my grandmother used to make but as usual with chef Yaya, a twist that makes it even better--the delicious sauce. The kebabs and salmon tikka melt in your mouth, and the dips are a must--be adventurous and try the turnip and date syrup dip. You won't be disappointed. Value wine list, great service, and free parking at Lucky across the street make it an easy place to choose for an evening meal. If you like smoking a hookah after dinner, they will set you up on the patio, just ask. Great place for groups, and belly dancing on the weekend. The owner, Chef Yaya and his wife make you feel like family. Truly Jannah--paradise in Arabic.

Jannah is a very pleasant place to have dinner with a group of people with whom you actually want to have a conversation. It's quiet and calm--there is music, but it's soft and doesn't intrude. The staff is friendly and helpful and the food unusual and delicious. Our bottle of wine was excellent and not sky-high expensive. In short, I recommend Jannah highly,

Family oriented and family run feeling at this mish-mash Iraqi/Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine restaurant. Despite our waiter's inexperience, second day on the job, we felt well taken care of throughout our evening. He invited us to stay and enjoy the belly dancer who was scheduled to appear in 15 minutes despite the fact that our tea and bill had been brought to the table. We thoroughly enjoyed the performance and the audience involvement from age 2 to 70 made it a lot of fun. I had the lamb with fattoush salad, a pita bread salad akin to a panzanella with a lemon/olive oil/mint vinaigrette dressing - light, refreshing and lovely served with olives, tomatoes, cucumbers and feta. The lamb was delicious. Great night!
