Diner Reviews
  • "Although we had a reservation, we had to wait about 20 minutes before a table opened up. The place was really hopping and not comfortable for waiting. The tables are very close together and the noise level overwhelming. To be fair, I am almost 60 and my adult children who accompanied me were not bothered by the noise. The staff was very solicitous, apologizing for the wait and graciously seating us as soon as possible. The place is old and charming. Food was great!"

  • "I have had brunch here many times. Decent and good for groups. Dinner did not blow it out of the park. Just some random dishes (jerk chicken, italian style pasta, chorizo spanish rice soup?) that didn't really make sense and were just really ok. Jane's gets by on being a neighborhood staple but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here for dinner at all."

  • "Jane's was a new discovery for us and we will certainly be returning in the near future. It is in a lovely neighborhood and the food for brunch was wonderful. We loved the interior decor and the staff was very friendly. The menu was varied and not your typical take on brunch so it was nice to try something with a new twist."

  • "It has been a few years since I last visited Jane's. It is as good as I remembered it. Went with two of my favorite people and they loved it as well. The group was "fit for a king", cheese plate outstanding! Will be going again soon."

  • "There are two spaces to Jane's. The original space is this quaint romantic authentic Bucktown bungalow feel. Two window seats are for a really intimate dinner. Great bar if you just want to chill. The expansion is shabby chic. Porcelain tile floors, crystal chandeliers...perfect for a brunch party or bigger private party space That can be rented out. The food is exceptional. Some adventurous for the culinary in you but traditional items as well. We had a party of 9 for brunch on a Sunday that I booked the day before. scones are killer with clotted cream on the side..decadent. I've been multiple times for dinner but this is the first for brunch. Has never disappointed;-) Truly great for many occasions and clientele."

  • "Awesome restaurant, perfect anytime, but specially for for dinner and theater (Trap Door Theater is in the same building)!"

  • "After hearing about Jane's for years we arrived Friday evening for our 8pm reservations and were promptly seated in what we both felt were the best seats in the house...in the window! A very intimate space yet able to see over the restaurant and the street activity. Our server was very knowledgeable of the dishes and their preparation. 1st the mussels - each were open and meaty; the cream curry & white wine sauce was well balanced and complimentary to the mussels. The wrapped rare tuna had a nice kick and had us wishing for an entree size. The black grouper was perfectly prepared, the sake-ginger sauce with the bok choy, mushrooms and water chestnuts were delicious! the Chef & his son were a delight to meet. We will be back...often!"

  • "The steak sandwich on the lunch menu was great, cooked to perfection, nice blend of peppers, and just the right amount of bread. The salad served with the sandwich was surprisingly tasty. Jane's is a comfortable place to have a casual lunch."

  • "I do not understand reviewers who say Romantic or Fit for Foodies. We went here because we were seeking unique vegetarian options and had heard good things. The food was pretty good with the quinoa-corn linguine being an example: great concept, quality ingredients, poor execution. The flavors in the sauce are not balanced and the tastes are both muddled and unmixed at different points in the dish. Not upset, not disappointed, but not an unreserved fan either. My wife's pasta special was a substitute for the sandwich she really wanted and it suffered from the same ingredient imbalance. The service was what you would expect in any nicer pancake house."

  • "We chose Jane's to meet an out-of-state visitor for dinner. The location is great in a nice neighborhood near the Kennedy and the Clybourn Metra stop. Food was excellent. Service was very friendly."

  • "This was my second time going to Jane's. The goat cheese chicken meal was delicious the first time I went. The second time, I got the veggie burger and that was not very good at all. I made a reservation through open table, yet the party of only 3 still had to wait over 20 minutes to be seated. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of making a reservation?"

  • "We don't live in the neighborhood but it was apparent it's popular with the locals. As we were seated in the window, we watched several couples carrying babies or holding small children walking to and from the restaurant. Still the noise level was very good so it was easy to enjoy the meal. As for the food. Good but nothing exceptional. We thought scone which was more the size of a puffy cookie was expensive at $5.00. Coffee cups were the sauce type so they are small but the staff refilled them regularly. Don't think we'd make a special trip there but would stop in if in the neighborhood."

  • "We end up at Jane's because of its shared space with the zany Trap Door Theatre - and it's always a comfort & joy to dine there. Menu is sane, creative, well prepared & presented and actually quite reasonable. The wine list is short & the prices represent the quality of the wine - but even what may seem like an expensive wine is balanced with a reasonably priced food menu. Their menu notes "V" for vegetarian, "GF" for gluten-free. Our terrific wait person (sorry I didnt catch her name) also explained some items that sounded vegetarian but maybe had chicken stock, etc. We were there on a snowy Friday night in January *& finished VERY early for theatre. Wait person suggested we just stay, sit, relax until . Nice! GREAT experience!"

  • "You can always rely on Jane's for high quality food, service and ambience. I particularly appreciate that their menu has offerings for vegetarians, and though a bit narrower, for vegans too. It's among my top five favorites in Chicago."

  • "We had a 1:15 reservation and were running late but called to let the host know. The host said they too were running behind. We got there at 1:25 and were not seated until 1:45. Another group who had a 1:30 reservation and showed up after us was seated first. The host was not very apologetic and there was no place to wait so we stood between tables awkwardly. The host told us the reservation is to let them know a group is coming NOT a guarantee for holding a table. It is extremely misleading and very frustrating as we walked fifteen minutes in the freezing cold to get there and then were treated quite rudely."

  • "My group of friend who really enjoy each other chose Janes because of location and price. Two of the group chose the Sallmon stew which they loved, the Burrito was excellent and the rest was wonderful. The retaurant was too quiet when we arrived but we found out that as the tables filled up the loudness grew. Overall we would definitely come back and bring the rest of our group!!"

  • "Easy atmosphere and good, thoughtfully conceived dishes. Underlying vegetarian, sustainable current to how dishes are put together. Family place, so expect children with the noise and atmosphere families with little kids create. Solid choice for a casual, neighborhood meal that is tasty. Not overly expensive, but not a cheap evening either."

  • "The goat cheese stuffed chicken was amazing. The atmosphere is very cozy. It is great for a date night spot. The only thing that bothers me as that the menu constantly changes, so if you find something you love, it may not be there the next time you dine."

  • "Food was tasty, ambiance pleasant but tables too close for comfort -- felt like we were part of conversations on both sides."

  • "I dine at Jane's several times a year and always enjoy myself immensely. I end up having the same entree salad usually (Salmon Salad) but have the pleasure of trying other dishes that my party orders. Everything is always so flavorful and fresh. This time the Chef even made his rounds to ask how the guests meals were--a very nice touch! I also really enjoy the ambience in Jane's. The low lighting, candle and a flower or more at each table. I like sitting in the window--one of the two tables that are up a couple of stairs at the front of the restaurant. When it is just two of us, Jane's has been kind enough to save that table--most likely a little easier the earlier the reservation. Those I am with always enjoy their experience as well!"

  • "I was at Jane's on Tuesday night on a double date and was impressed with every item we ordered. We started with an ample plate of hummus and we ordered the pork chop, stuffed chicken breast, salmon stew special, and daily soup. All were served hot and tasty and to perfection. We'll be back."

  • "For a Florida gal, I'm particular about my seafood, but Jane's did not disappoint. Delicious mussels, and one of the few Chicago menus still serving Grouper. Romantic atmosphere. Great portion size. Friendly staff. I'll be back."

  • "We finally made it to Jane's on New Years Eve. Finally - because we had to change our reservations twice due to the heavy snow and resulting traffic. Luckily for us they could accommodate our changing schedule, probably because we weren't the only ones running late. Once there, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, the service was great and the food was delicious. I can't remember a time when we both actually cleaned our plates! This was my second visit and will definitely return."

  • "We've eaten at Jane's so many times, and have never been disappointed. Great service, for starters. The food always come out quickly and piping hot. Coffee and cocktails are excellent as well. We just took our parents a couple weeks ago and everyone was really happy with their meals. It was a brunch, though some had lunch items as well. Overall, another stellar experience at Jane's!"

  • "The location of this restaurant is very convenient for people who attend the huge Catholic church St. Mary of the Angels. You can have dinner and walk to the church. We have made a tradition of attending some special festivities in the church, and we like to stop for dinner at Jane's, they serve us on time and the food is great."

  • "A large group of seven friends and I went to Jane's Sunday morning. We made a 9:30 reservation. Everything was set and ready for our arrival. The service was great; we had a server and the front of the house helping our large party. The food came beautifully plated and delicious! Bonus: full bar... Mimosas. This was a good choice!"

  • "Forgot how great Jane's is. Brunch was fantastic. The burrito is too good to even be called a burrito and the potato side is fantastic. You can't eat slow enough to enjoy every bite.... Too good !! I would have given a 5-star rating but the lack awareness of anyone on the staff that the dishwasher's music was filling the house cost you. Ozzy, Judas Priest, et al was blasting from the back kitchen. Would sound nit picky if I was near the source but I was sitting up front in the window and could hear every word of every song... Love classic metal but I'm sure not the cozy ambiance brunch music ownership would like to serenade customers with. An easy fix so don't let this keep you from trying Jane's it was SOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOO GOOD !!!"

  • "We had a really nice dinner and really enjoyed the patient wait staff who allowed us much time to catch up and chat. The only problem was that our table was directly in line with the door. Every time it opened we felt the cold air. Otherwise, it was a vibrant fun evening and I really enjoyed the food and wine...oh and friends of course!"

  • "It has been years since I have been to Jane's....it is still such a charming space. We split the Pear Salad, which we forgot to say light on the dressing but it was perfectly dressed and so flavorful. I had the goat cheese stuffed chicken and my dining partner had the pork chop. Delicious. The pork chop at Jane's was how a pork chop should be. It had the grill and char flavor...delicious! My chicken was delicious. One thing that has annoyed my in dining out is the amount of salt restaurants use...even salting a salad. Jane's really seemed to let the food shine. The service was good...not intrusive...they came at the appropriate times. Highly recommend and will definitely not wait another couple of years to return."

  • "The burger meat did not taste right. I did not feel good after eating it most of the day. The rest of group got breakfast dishes and they all enjoyed it. I'm not sure this place knows how to cook burgers and you might be better off with not ordering meat items on menu."

  • "Service was perfect. We were not rushed to order...which is nice for a large party of freinds that wanted to catch up. Drinks were filled apporpriatly and very good. They accommodate food sensitivity or restrictions. The food was AMAZING!!! Perfect portions. Veggies were crispy...even in the hot soup!!! Every single person raved about the food! This was my birthday and didn't know what to expect and I was extremely satisfied!!! Loved the ambiance too!!!"

  • "The last time we went to Jane's we could not wait to go back. So we did and the service was a complete 180 to our first experience. For so reason the waitress disappeared after she ordered the wrong dish. She never came back to the table and we did not see her anywhere in the restaurant. The food was great but unfortunately our group of four could not dine together. In there defense they did send over two awesome desserts."

  • "We had a reservation for Brunch which was great because so many neighborhood places do not take reservations. Quickly seated in a funky bright room. The mimosa was great - lots of champagne and the juice tasted fresh. I had the breakfast burrito and my friend had a steak and eggs, and both were very good. With coffee and the tip, we paid $34, which I thought was very reasonable for the quality of the food. It's not fussy food, but it's much nicer than most neighborhood restaurants. We found street parking without a problem."

  • "For an informal evening out with friends, Jane's is terrific. Diverse selection on the menu. Everyone pleased with what they ordered. Service was friendly and professional without being over-bearing. Unfortunately, a table of four older people was pretty loud and we're annoying to other diners. We will return and gladly introduce Jane's to friends."
