Diner Reviews
  • "Have been to this restaurant a few times, enjoyed the dry pepper shrimp, the cumin lamb and the singapore noodles. This last visit was not good. Had the dry pepper chicken, you would think that a restaurant of this caliber would use white meat chicken but this this dish was not only very salty but consisted of tiny chopped peieces of breaded thighs. Not very appetizing and very dissapointing. The chile pepper shrimp was also very salty, I know it is chineese food, but it does not have to be that salty especially for the region of food that this restaurant focuses on. Finally the scalliaon pancake was mainly dough, not much scallion."

  • "Our server was helpful with helping us select off of a menu with which we were unfamiliar. The place is lively and fun, a great date place if you want to do something a bit spicy, and the food was fantastic. Order of the Setzuan menu: they know what they're doing!"

  • "Nice restaurant and ambience inside, but food is pretty bad. Couple of the appetizers were so spicy one could not even tell what they were eating. House cabernet was undrinkable. Chicken in the entrees was not white meat at all and tasted quite "fatty". Whole fish was "filleted" by server one-handed and left a mess. Should have known that with so many open reservations, we would not be impressed."

  • "Although the restaurant was very busy, the service was excellent. This was our first visit and we would certainly return. Great food, generous portions, helpful staff and a manager who had a friendly, watchful eye on the entire dining room to make sure everyone was taken care of. There were mature couples (like us), students and families with small children - all of whom were treated equally well. The spice level on most dishes is 1-5. I ordered chicken Dry Pot which was brought to the table over a flame - great presentation. Although I like food quite spicy, I tried a 1 at the server's suggestion and was glad I didn't get it spicier. You can always start low and ask them to make it spicier, they pointed out. Very helpful advice!"

  • "I feel mixed about Jane G's. The seafood hot & sour soup was excellent. I ordered shrimp in garlic sauce as a main dish, and it was very sweet. For me, I don't like food that is sweet as it takes away from the other flavors. However, I liked Jane G's and I would return to sample other dishes."

  • "Jane G's remains the best Chinese restaurant in Center City! Highly recommended! Very good option for lunch as well."

  • "We have been to Jane G's on multiple occasions, and feel the food is very good, far and away superior to your average Chinese restaurant in town. Our only complaint would be the inconsistency in spice levels. They rank the spice level from 1 to 5, and on one occasion a level 3 is barely noticable, and on another it can leave your mouth on fire. I like the heat, but for someone who doesn't like too much, this could ruin the meal. We will definitely be back, and hope that this inconsistency will be fixed."

  • "Food is modern tasting without all the msg. Service always great. Lunch menu is so much food for the price."

  • "This is the perfect place for a nice romantic dinner. They tend to get a little crowded on weekends so making a reservation is the best way to go and Open Table makes it easy. We had a full course, the Chicken and Mushroom dumplings, Hot and Sour soup, Crabmeat Fried Rice and the gluten free chocolate cake with ice cream. Everything was fantastic-- spiced to our personal taste level. The jalepeno soy sauce served with the dumplings was so good, we had to have it with the main course as well. Jane G's is a good mix of upscale and laid back and the pricing is a tad more expensive than most Chinese restaurants but the food and ambiance make it worth it."

  • "Jane G's chose to do a chef's tasting, 7 or 12 courses depending on the size of the party. They were great about asking for allergies or things people really didn't like and accomodated all 6 of us without missing a beat. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the food."

  • "I like spice but the hot and sour soup was inedible. The combo lunch was ridiculously small for $15 in a Chinese restaurant. I ordered dumplings and the Peking duck salad. If the salad contained any duck, you sure could have fooled me. And the service was virtually non-existent. I'd never go back."

  • "This was my second experience at Jane G's and it was not the best one. We made sure to order something to the level of our spice liking and possibly they made a mistake, but it was extremely too spicy. They sent the entrees back and had them remade with less spice in which they were much less spicy and more flavor. But in the end we didn't really care for the flavor of the dish anyway and hardly ate through it. The server was wonderful and handled everything well and was very informative when we asked questions. I may be inclined to go back only once more to try their Hot Pot dish but that would be the only way."

  • "This place had 12 courses for $35 for Restaurant Week - and each course was a regular size, not even smaller portions. Also it was all amazing but trust them when they explain the splice levels for you."

  • "We went to Jane G's for restaurant week and did the chef's tasting menu. Every single thing that was served to us was delicious and the portions are VERY generous so that's always a plus. Our waiter was very friendly and asked us a bunch if questions to get a feel for what to have the chef prepare for us. I love this place it's very clean and modern I will definitely be back!"

  • "First time there. Waitress was extremely helpful. Calamari and brussel sprouts were delicious and I don't like brussel sprouts. Didn't care for the crispy rice dish- too sweet. The lovely couple next to us told us to try Han Dynasty, that will be out next place to visit. Overall, nice decor, delicious drinks, great appetizers and ok food. One word of caution, the spice level is extremely hot. BF loves hot n spicy but this was another dimension!"

  • "I don't know why I have not visited this great spot before, but now that I know how good it is, I'll return frequently. Not only is the food terrific, but it's a lovely setting, with comfortable chairs and nice big tables. And close to work, so it's an easy five-10 minute walk from my office. This is upscale Chinese, so you will pay a llittle more, but it's well worth it."

  • "The first time I went to Jane G's I was very impressed. I had the eggplant which was delicious, freshly cooked and nice and spicey, just the way I like it. The next time I went, same to be said about the eggplant. Next I tried a shrimp dish and was very disappointed. It tasted like the shrimp had been cooked from frozen. This time I ordered the eggplant and it tasted like it had been sitting around for days. I also treated my friend to a glass of wine and considering the cost, the amount in our glasses were skimpy, to say the least. I like to take friends there for lunch because I like the ambiance and the location. I used to like the food. I will try one more time. Maybe it was an off day for them. I sure won't order wine."

  • "This is the second time I have dines here (for lunch only) and the food and service have been consistently good. The hostess was very friendly and accommodating, service was attentive and food came out quickly. The décor and ambiance of the restaurant are also very beautiful - much nicer than what you would see at most Chinese restaurants in the city. I didn't give 5 stars because the Walnut chicken was made with dark meat and was a little on the chewy/fatty. For the price, I expected it to be tender white meat and the menu didn't specify. The Chicken Lo Mein, was tasty, but had very few veggies despite the fact that I requested extra veggies, however, our server was very accommodating & brought a side of broccoli to add to the dish."

  • "We went to Jane G's for dinner on Christmas evening. The restaurant is very pretty and we were seated promptly. It was a busy night, but service, overall was pretty good, but occasionally was too quick to pick up plates of food that were not finished. The food was delicious. There were a couple of strange things, though. No rice was served (or offered) with our entrees. When our entrees were completed and the table was cleared, we were politely handed the check. No offer of coffee, tea, or dessert. I found this surprising and disappointing. Finally, one final note on the check. We were a party of 6 and an 18% gratuity was automatically added to the bill. Not sure why. We are a standard 20% gratuity family, even if service is average."

  • "We ordered a variety of dishes to share including several vegetarian (brussel sprouts, eggplant) and all were delicious. The service was prompt and courteous and the decor is attractive. This restaurant has become of one my favorites in the neighborhood. I will return and recommend it to others."

  • "I took a group of 9 here on Sat Night. We had a great time, they spaced out the food so we didnt feel rushed at all like at other Chinese restaurants. The food was totally creative adn delicious, not greasy at all. Favs include the special brussel sprouts, assortment of dumplings (so interesting and totally tasty!), half duck and peppered steak... also the special fried dough desserts! Special thanks to our fantastic waitress, Amanda!!"

  • "Food was very good and the restaurant has some unusual interesting dishes Service was good and attentive We ordered main course and they sold us an appetizer then brought all the food together when it would have been preferable to get the appetizer in advince but apart from this it was great"

  • "This is not in any way authentic Chinese however it is good, Americanized Chinese food. Very good actually. Very plentiful main courses; unless you have a very big appetite, you will either take alot home or throw alot away. Reasonably priced."

  • "We chose this restaurant because one of us is a vegetarian and we wanted to dine at 2:00 p.m. on a Sunday. This restaurant was open at the right time and had many veg options. All food was delicious especially the edamame dumplings. This restaurant is definitely superior to the average Chinese restaurant. I will return and recommend it to others."

  • "loved the chili oil wontons - in fact they were so good that the following courses just couldn't compare There was a fried rock shrimp dish with a type of mayonaise sauce drizzled on top which did not impress - i thought that the shrimp lo mein which accompanied it was better the service was very good though"

  • "Easily the most authentic Sichuan cuisine available in Philadelphia; and likely one of the best Chinese restaurants in the region. If you come to Jane G's ordering the usual pedestrian Americanized Chinese fare, you may miss the point. Where other restaurants load up on starchy batter, Jane G's focuses on the essential flavors, the heat of the Sichuan pepper, and on presenting these from a delightful array of different angles. They do it in an accessible way, with each dish fully customized to the diner in spice and content. The staff are fantastic; Jenn took amazing care of us and presented the menu with excitement and enthusiasm that made the experience complete. Take her advice, and order the prix fixe menu if it is your first time!"
