Diner Reviews
  • "Convenient location, very friendly and efficient staff and some excellent Chinese cooking for Center City Philadelphia. It is an ideal place for larger groups or for casual dining with friends and family. we enjoyed it as first time visitors."

  • "The food was pretty flavorless. I had to wait 20 minutes after my girlfriend had gotten her food before I got mine, so by that point her food was cold."

  • "My second time here! Brought my dad her for a belated Father's day dinner. Everyone was good the ONLY weird thing was, for some reason, when we first sat down the bus boy came and took our cloth napkins?? also the wine glasses?? why? did he somehow thought those napkins and wine glasses was for decoration? Everyone else had cloth napkins... Otherwise the food was great and our server was pretty attentive :) Next time i'll be back to try their hot pot!"

  • "I especially enjoyed the 'truffle edamame dumplings'. Everyone in the party of 6 loved the food and service - good vegetarian choices."

  • "This was my first time at Jane G's and it was absolutely delicious. The hostesses and wait staff were lovely, the food was delicious and obviously freshly made in their kitchens, and I loved the decor of the restaurant. I will be back!"

  • "We have been here many times before and always had a good meal, but this time was not as good. The meat in the orange beef was so tuff you could have used it as show leather. Th dumbing was wonderful as always. "

  • "We enjoyed two delicious appetizers - cauliflower and edamame dumplings, then shared the eggplant platter. We are not vegetarians but at this restaurant the veg dishes are so good we prefer them. Wine was very good. Server was courteous and attentive. We will return again and recommend it to others."

  • "The food was too spicy, and our server did a poor job of explaining to us the level of spiciness. I ordered a three out of five in terms of spicy, but it tasted like a 5 out of 5 or higher when I got it. Our server gave us the impression that a three out of five was mild, but far from it. I woke up in the middle of the night with a stomach ache. Also even though the restaurant was half empty the tables were too close together, and the servers had to ask me to get up and stand while they squeeze through four times during our dinner so that they could get to the other tables in the corner. "

  • "Nice food, reasonable price and convenient location. Really enjoy this place."

  • "The food is excellent, so I highly recommend it just for that alone; however, the service was slow and one of the entrees came out 20-25 minutes after the rest of the group's meals. By the time the rest of them were done eating, one person was still waiting on their entree. Needless to say, we had to return the order once it came out since the majority was already done eating. Even though that was a major con, we all still enjoyed ourselves. The ambiance is great and the food is delicious."

  • "Jane G's is one of our favorite restaurants. We've been there a number of times and the food is always delicious. It's as good or better than Han Dynasty. The atmosphere is great, and the food has always been wonderful. Get the double cooked dish with fish, it's amazing."

  • "My friend thought of meeting us at Buddakhan first, but I prefer Jane G's. The food is always excellent, and the quality is consistent. It's also a very good value. I like to get a good bang for my buck, and this gives you an explosion. The décor is stylish, the wine list impressive and not overpriced, and the food is as spicy or mild as you direct. I had the hot pot, spiced at a high 5, and took some home to enjoy over noodles the night after. My husband usually lowers his to a number 4. Many of the patrons are Asian, which speaks volumes about the quality. Jane always comes to our table to say hello. The service is excellent. This is one of our favorite Center City restaurants."

  • "This is my second time at Jane G's and the second time my friends and I have opted for the $40 tasting menu. This time there were four of us and we ended up with 10 different dishes ranging from sliced cucumbers in chili oil to seafood fried rice to dry pot beef with lemon grass and other fragerant spices. No one left hungry and there was plenty food left over as always. The first time I went with just one other person and were given 6 dishes. Any way the one slight thing is the tables in the middle of the room are a little close to one another so getting to inside chairs can be tricky. Our server was very helpful though at times a little to much when he recommended the cheese cake b/c its what Americans would like the best..."

  • "I was surprised to find this place in the heart of center city. I've been to most restaurants in center city yet walked by this dozens of times (not sure how as it sits on a very busy corner). The decor is fun and energetic. The food I'm told is authentic. I'd probably believe that since half of the diners were Chinese. The spice scale is perfect for me. Careful - 3/5 is on the edge of too spicy for most. Would definitely go back"

  • "We enjoyed 5 dishes for 2 people. Although we are not vegetarians, we chose all veg dishes which were delicious. Good wine also. All dishes were served at once because we did not instruct the server in what order we wanted them. So it was a bit overwhelming. Next time we will plan better. We will definitely return and recommend it to others."

  • "I've been wanting to try Jane G's for a while and my birthday was the perfect excuse. Our waiter was great, the good was good. It wasn't the absolute best Chinese food I've ever had, but I enjoyed my meal and would definitely go back. The restuarant had a lot of energy, and it was overall very fun."

  • "Jane G's is a welcome addition to center city. It's an upscale Chinese restaurant that is really attractive, has a bar, and has a Happy Hour. The sweet and sour whole fish is fantastic ( three of us shared it) as isa the tomato egg soup. The other hot appetizers such as the scallion pancakes are all delicious. If you are going with a group of eight ask for the private dining room ( It's a lovely alcove overlooking the rest of the restaurant."

  • "The food was delicious and the place has a very cool atmosphere. Our waiter was just okay.........not friendly but average. I would go back to try some other things on the menu. I very much enjoyed my meal."

  • "They have really good food and would highly recommend anyday!!!"

  • "Come here for pretty decent Chinese food and good ambiance. There are some better Chinese food places but they are going to be hole in the walls. Food is a bit pricey, but you pay for the location! Gets pretty packed on the weekend so be sure to make reservations. I would chose this place over Han Dynasty any day. "

  • "Just had Chef Xue's perfume style stew. Sounds strange, but it was one of the best Chinese dishes I've ever had. Delicious soup base with bean sprouts, multiple varieties of mushrooms, your choice if protein and so much more! Words do not do it justice. There are 5 levels of heat, be sure to account for the heat of the broth itself. Can't wait to go back again!"

  • "A group from work of us went there for lunch. The food Was excellent! It had some traditional favorites you would find at a Chinese Restaurant, but it was NOT oily! The ingredients were fresh. I especially enjoyed the crab fried rice. Lots a crab! with a great taste! "

  • "Have been to this restaurant a few times, enjoyed the dry pepper shrimp, the cumin lamb and the singapore noodles. This last visit was not good. Had the dry pepper chicken, you would think that a restaurant of this caliber would use white meat chicken but this this dish was not only very salty but consisted of tiny chopped peieces of breaded thighs. Not very appetizing and very dissapointing. The chile pepper shrimp was also very salty, I know it is chineese food, but it does not have to be that salty especially for the region of food that this restaurant focuses on. Finally the scalliaon pancake was mainly dough, not much scallion."

  • "Our server was helpful with helping us select off of a menu with which we were unfamiliar. The place is lively and fun, a great date place if you want to do something a bit spicy, and the food was fantastic. Order of the Setzuan menu: they know what they're doing!"
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "Nice restaurant and ambience inside, but food is pretty bad. Couple of the appetizers were so spicy one could not even tell what they were eating. House cabernet was undrinkable. Chicken in the entrees was not white meat at all and tasted quite "fatty". Whole fish was "filleted" by server one-handed and left a mess. Should have known that with so many open reservations, we would not be impressed."

  • "Although the restaurant was very busy, the service was excellent. This was our first visit and we would certainly return. Great food, generous portions, helpful staff and a manager who had a friendly, watchful eye on the entire dining room to make sure everyone was taken care of. There were mature couples (like us), students and families with small children - all of whom were treated equally well. The spice level on most dishes is 1-5. I ordered chicken Dry Pot which was brought to the table over a flame - great presentation. Although I like food quite spicy, I tried a 1 at the server's suggestion and was glad I didn't get it spicier. You can always start low and ask them to make it spicier, they pointed out. Very helpful advice!"

  • "I feel mixed about Jane G's. The seafood hot & sour soup was excellent. I ordered shrimp in garlic sauce as a main dish, and it was very sweet. For me, I don't like food that is sweet as it takes away from the other flavors. However, I liked Jane G's and I would return to sample other dishes."

  • "Jane G's remains the best Chinese restaurant in Center City! Highly recommended! Very good option for lunch as well."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "We have been to Jane G's on multiple occasions, and feel the food is very good, far and away superior to your average Chinese restaurant in town. Our only complaint would be the inconsistency in spice levels. They rank the spice level from 1 to 5, and on one occasion a level 3 is barely noticable, and on another it can leave your mouth on fire. I like the heat, but for someone who doesn't like too much, this could ruin the meal. We will definitely be back, and hope that this inconsistency will be fixed."

  • "Food is modern tasting without all the msg. Service always great. Lunch menu is so much food for the price."

  • "This is the perfect place for a nice romantic dinner. They tend to get a little crowded on weekends so making a reservation is the best way to go and Open Table makes it easy. We had a full course, the Chicken and Mushroom dumplings, Hot and Sour soup, Crabmeat Fried Rice and the gluten free chocolate cake with ice cream. Everything was fantastic-- spiced to our personal taste level. The jalepeno soy sauce served with the dumplings was so good, we had to have it with the main course as well. Jane G's is a good mix of upscale and laid back and the pricing is a tad more expensive than most Chinese restaurants but the food and ambiance make it worth it."

  • "Jane G's chose to do a chef's tasting, 7 or 12 courses depending on the size of the party. They were great about asking for allergies or things people really didn't like and accomodated all 6 of us without missing a beat. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the food."
    Dined on 1/29/2014
  • "I like spice but the hot and sour soup was inedible. The combo lunch was ridiculously small for $15 in a Chinese restaurant. I ordered dumplings and the Peking duck salad. If the salad contained any duck, you sure could have fooled me. And the service was virtually non-existent. I'd never go back."

  • "This was my second experience at Jane G's and it was not the best one. We made sure to order something to the level of our spice liking and possibly they made a mistake, but it was extremely too spicy. They sent the entrees back and had them remade with less spice in which they were much less spicy and more flavor. But in the end we didn't really care for the flavor of the dish anyway and hardly ate through it. The server was wonderful and handled everything well and was very informative when we asked questions. I may be inclined to go back only once more to try their Hot Pot dish but that would be the only way."

  • "This place had 12 courses for $35 for Restaurant Week - and each course was a regular size, not even smaller portions. Also it was all amazing but trust them when they explain the splice levels for you."

  • "We went to Jane G's for restaurant week and did the chef's tasting menu. Every single thing that was served to us was delicious and the portions are VERY generous so that's always a plus. Our waiter was very friendly and asked us a bunch if questions to get a feel for what to have the chef prepare for us. I love this place it's very clean and modern I will definitely be back!"

  • "First time there. Waitress was extremely helpful. Calamari and brussel sprouts were delicious and I don't like brussel sprouts. Didn't care for the crispy rice dish- too sweet. The lovely couple next to us told us to try Han Dynasty, that will be out next place to visit. Overall, nice decor, delicious drinks, great appetizers and ok food. One word of caution, the spice level is extremely hot. BF loves hot n spicy but this was another dimension!"

  • "I don't know why I have not visited this great spot before, but now that I know how good it is, I'll return frequently. Not only is the food terrific, but it's a lovely setting, with comfortable chairs and nice big tables. And close to work, so it's an easy five-10 minute walk from my office. This is upscale Chinese, so you will pay a llittle more, but it's well worth it."
