Our style is what we like to call “modern California coastal” dining, highlighting the season’s vibrant, locally sourced bounty from both land and sea.


Our kitchen is a chef-driven, farm-to-table workshop where we create ever-changing menus dictated by the season’s finest products of time and place.

  • "I have had a brunch and dinner here and found the menu small, but adequate. The breakfast menu is even smaller. If you like a big American breakfast, you will be disappointing. However, what is on the menu is very good. The quiche portion is small, but delicious. Wish it came with fruit instead salad. The egg sandwich is on homemade sourdough or multi-grain toast. While there is only one piece of bacon, what was there was tasty. I didn't like the effort to get us to order at the bar. It was called "grab and go." If I wanted that I would go to McDonald's. We did get table service. The food was very good. The service is better and more polished at brunch and dinner."

  • "Our group of 4 arrived on time and was seated promptly. We brought a bottle of wine to share but decided to order other wine first. We asked about their corkage fee and policy. We were told that it was $25 but would be waived if we bought a bottle from the restaurant. We stated that we would be ordering at least 4 glasses and asked if that would meet their criteria. The waiter came back and said yes, but only if they were all the same wines. We went back and forth with the waiter with some friendly banter about their policy hoping that either they would relax the policy and at least discount the corkage or have the manager come to the table and discuss it. Neither happened. Feeling a little under appreciated, not sure I would return."

  • "The food turned out to be pretty good but they offer everything al a carte. You have to order the pomme frittes or any sides separately. My friend ordered a side salad with her burger and both were pretty tasty. I ordered the lox and egg scramble and it tasted great but I had to order toast separately and they charged me $2.50. When you order eggs for breakfast you don't expect to have to pay for toast with it. The service was just ok. The space is very pretty and the outdoor patio area is very nice. I would try this place again but for dinner. Maybe we just got the staff on an off morning."

  • "Our group of 8 was accomadated well. We enjoyed a couple bottles of wine and appetizers, entrees and dessert with coffees, all while we watched the suset transform our view. Our meals were delicious and the service was wonderful. My water glass was never empty and I was surprised to get fresh flat ware in between courses. Nice!"

  • "Picked this restaurant as a "meet in the middle" between LA and OC due in large part to the favorable reviews on Open Table. Then read the Yelp reviews many of which were severely negative and started to have misgivings. Went ahead anyway and very glad we did. What a great place. Terrific food and friendly knowledgeable service. Creative and varied menu with good vegetarian options. Really sorry this place isn't closer to our home. Which brings me to the title of the review. I have a hard time understanding why there are such negative reviews showing up on Yelp. Who is writing them? In part it seems to be people who went for breakfast. Can't comment on breakfast, but really think the bad dinner reviews are off base."

  • "Although it is attached to the Marriott Courtyard Hotel, it is an independent Chef owned restaurant. It s a farm to table concept locally sourcing much of what is served. We loved the indoor/outdoor arrangement and sat under the roof, but at the edge of the patio. The food was very good. The service was good. The sound was beyond energetic to noisy. We will go back and recommend it."

  • "Was in Long Beach for the evening. The dishes were good, not great. We were disappointed especially after reading that the chef was a James Beard award nominee. The Wahoo Poke appetizer was tasty and we thought the rest would be just as good, but it wasn't. The brussel sprout dish was so overcooked, the brussel sprouts were unrecognizable in taste as well as color. We had the Black Cod and Octopus for entrees. They were good, but not great. The Mexican chocolate dessert was very good, but not a wow. Living in LA, I would not go out of my way to return, unfortunately... Although, I will say, the vibe was very nice..."

  • "Although I still say I liked the place, I didn't love it for one reason: during dinner, the sun is blazing down on the restaurant. Sitting outside is impossible before sunset as there is zero shade. Sitting inside wasn't much better as there are no blinds whatsoever. We were dripping sweat by the time we finished. The restaurant boasts a farm to table concept yet there wasn't a grey vegetable variety, meat heavy menu. My prk chop was good, the side of veggies just ok. Favorite part: blackberry mojito. Lastly, the restaurant has no bathroom! You need to enter the attached hotel and walk down a long hall to find one."

  • "We love that they use sustainable foods grown locally, and that's why the menu changes from time to time. It makes the food taste exceptional and fresh. We loved the egg white omelet. The ice cream-like whipped cream on the chicken and waffles was divine. The root chips were delicious with the ahi tuna appetizer. We love the dressing on the chicken crisper salad. And fresh home made ice cream never gets old, especially with home made cookies! Symphony of flavors in our mouths!"

  • "A friend recommended James Republic and we are so glad we gave it a try. Open airy modern feel. Surprising since it's located inside of the Long Beach Courtyard Marriott. They have a great corner space and the whole restaurant has that indoor outdoor feel. Be warned it can get a bit chilly, so dress accordingly. My husband had the blackened kale as a salad & the cauliflower steak. The blackened kale was fabulous. The best kale we have tasted. The cauliflower steak was nothing special, but the red quinoa with roasted tomatoes and basil was yummy. I had the harvest tomato, mozzarella and basil salad. Amazing!! There is nothing better than fresh mozzarella, better than Italy. My burger also was very tasty. Can't wait to return with friends."

  • "Food was really good. Nice outdoor patio. Cool and comfortable restaurant in easy downtown location. Hostess was cold - not welcoming, no smile. Seated me and gave me a menu, but no drinks menu - I had to ask the waitress for it. Waitress was not much better, although she did warm up a little of the course of my meal."

  • "Contemporary and comfortable seating with open patio overlooking street corner which allows for people watching. Menu is limited but good. The fresh oyster appetizer, buttermilk biscuit, farro fried rice with pork belly entree were AWESOME! Drinks were very good; Moscow Mule is a classic. Feels like a west side restaurant located in Long Beach and reasonably priced. We're locals but it felt like a spa vacation. Very nice for a warm summer evening. Surprisingly kid friendly. "

Fish and meat portions were good, but a little more of the side ingredients would have provided better balance to the meal. I had potatoes but there wasn't alot and I had to ask what is was. All sauces were outstanding. Only recommendation would be to expand the wine list."

  • "I happened to read about this spot on Yelp. The reviews were mixed but the menu looked interesting. A friend and I came for lunch, mid-week. The site has "make a reservation" popping up on every screen and thought, this is Long Beach, no need. I am glad I made one. The place filled up quickly. I had the Catch: Wahoo over a bed of Couscous. It was wonderful! My friend, who is a bit hard to please, thoroughly enjoyed the Kobe burger. It's served on a wheat bun. A real plus. The wait staff were very attentive and helpful. I love the contemporary design and the surrounding area has a growing number of great boutiques. We usually go over to Manhattan Beach or Redondo Beach but this place is outstanding and is definitely a great find. "
