Our style is what we like to call “modern California coastal” dining, highlighting the season’s vibrant, locally sourced bounty from both land and sea.


Our kitchen is a chef-driven, farm-to-table workshop where we create ever-changing menus dictated by the season’s finest products of time and place.

  • "This was my first time dining at James Republic. Andrea was outstanding. She knew her menu and made some great recommendations. We had the the mussels as an appetiser; they were on point. My friend's chicken was a bit dry, so we sent it back. The manager made another recommendation (lamb burger), which was superb. My duck was equally delicious. We are looking forward to our next visit."

  • "Loved the atmosphere, menu and drinks! For starters we ordered a salad and roasted brussels sprouts - both delicious! My husband had the roasted chicken and I had the duck confit dish. Both dishes were bland unfortunately (probably better for us without all the loaded salt!). The drinks were great, too! Service was TOP NOTCH! We will definitely go back as the menu is really interesting and has many other choices."

  • "Great neighborhood restaurant, almost hate to let the world in on this fun place. Foodies will love it as well as less epicurian folks. The indoor/outdoor setting is perfect and there are both heating towers and warm blankets for dining on the deck and watching the street scene. Although it was a busy night we were not rushed and service was attentive but not pushy. Noise level was high on the "fun" meter but you could still easily enjoy the conversation at your table. Along with Utopia across the street, a treat for this evolving Long Beach neighborhood."

  • "This was our 3rd dining experience at James Republic and the first time I booked through Open Table. We arrived on time for our dinner reservation and were advised that because we reserved through Open Table, we must sit outside even though the restaurant had only two or three occupied tables. According to the hostess, OT automatically assigns tables to guests and the staff is unable to make changes; guests should instead call for reservations. Um, what? Upon being seated, we asked if a heater could be moved within closer proximity to our table and were told "sorry, they are evenly spaced out here." The food and service were fine (not stellar), but the treatment by the front of house staff was hugely disappointing. Not sure we will return."

  • "Menu is very limited. The cauliflower soup is great. I was told the lentil stew was not spicy but I got a very spicey bite and later found one of those red peppers used to make Asian food spicy in it. The dumplings in it are really just strips of wheat tortillas."

  • "All-around good place to find fresh,unusual, tasty food and a dynamic atmosphere. James Republic is a nice addition to the East Village. It was my second trip to the restaurant, and although we ordered entrees this time, ordering a couple of side dishes can work as a meal. Be sure to make reservations on the weekend; the place was packed."

  • "This was my second time there. The first time was excellent all the way around! The food just kept on coming at just the right time. Be prepared as the dishes come out individually, which is good because you can enjoy the flavors. However on the second visit timing was a little off and we had to wait a little longer between courses. The food was definitely worth the wait though. Cool vibe with open air setting. Will definitely be a go to place this summer!"

  • "Had a late weekday lunch so it was not too busy. Sat on the balcony as the weather was nice. Creative menu and decent choice of wines. Had a nice Pinot Grigio and ordered the vegan black bean soup which was thick and well seasoned. Then the vegan grilled cauliflower steak with quinoa on the side which was very tasty. Service was prompt and not obtrusive."

  • "I was very disappointed because the service was horrible and it was not even busy. The selections on the menu looked amazing by the description, but when they were served, some of the ingredients listed were not visable. You feel like you are in a hotel restaurant. I would not return because they obviously never trained their wait staff......we had to pour our own wine......geez!!!!"

  • "Food--the perfectly grilled cauliflower steak with red guinoa & crunchy almonds was a vegan's delight. Service--the young short, gentleman from the kitchen who delivered our food should be trained on calmly placing food gently on a table. After all, the chef worked hard to create these original dishes that deserve better handling when they arrive at the customer's table. Ambience--Great modern lighting and comfortable leather chairs, a generous-sized table for two that is positioned far enough away from the next table. Upbeat music playing."

  • "JR is within walking distance from my house, so I decided to try it for Valentine's Day. The BF hates going out and is used to my organic cooking. This place is totally organic and you can tell the great quality of food the moment you taste it. I love that the menu varies, and it is very well thought out! We were both beyond pleased. Also, he's a big guy, and a lot of places these days have tiny chairs. Not here. Good sturdy tables, nice wide comfy chairs, great outdoor patio, nautical decor. Very comfortable! Oxtail wagon wheels were great, best Brussels sprouts ever, and dessert in a jar. We will definitely go back!"

  • "I have been to dinner at this restaurant about 5 times and love the food and drinks - very unique and fresh. I also love the ambiance. The details in the decor, furniture and lighting are beautiful with a nautical vibe. I went to brunch recently, once on a Friday - excellent food that you order at the bar, and again on a Sunday - table service and the food was actually just okay. I am not sure why the food was not so good on the Sunday but not to standard of my other visits. I remembered the cinnamon roll being outstanding and the sauce the second time seemed different :("

  • "Who knew a great restaurant could be stashed inside a Courtyard by Marriott? It seemed odd to walk through the hotel to get to James Republic, but the restaurant would do fine even if it was attached to a Motel 6. Great ambience, our waitress was funny and knowledgeable about the menu and the wines, and the food was amazing. We will definitely head back there again, and with other bars and businesses in the area, we may even stay the night at the CbyM for a weekend away from home!"

  • "I can't recommend for brunch or vegetarians. This is a great looking restaurant and fully open to the street during good weather. Unfortunately the quality of the venue is not matched by the quality of the food or service. The brunch menu looks like the chef is cleaning out the refrigerator: limited selection of odd combinations. The service was also disappointing. It didn't seem like anyone was in charge or particularly interested in being a waiter. I think it's time for a change in management."

  • "Location and decor are charming, however the food is average and service is extremely poor. Our reservation was for about an hour after they opened, but they were still setting up and it took several minutes for hostess to appear and seat us. Although they were not busy yet, we waited over 15 minutes for a waiter and finally flagged down the hostess who took our order. The first round of coffee was cold and we had to wait about 30 minutes for fresh coffee. I tried the french toast with pumpkin butter and maple syrup - the bread was very good, but could hardly see/taste the butter/syrup. Pet peeve: waiter dropped off bill while we were still eating and didn't refresh coffee/water. Perhaps this was an off day, this place could have potential."

  • "This was our third time dining at James Republic and it did not disappoint. Food was great and we tried their super tasty and creative cocktails. The roasted beets salad and the asparagus salads are outstanding! However, the corkage is $25 per bottle and the wine list is limited. I suggest offering free corkage on a couple of nights per week or lowering the fee. We love this restaurant but we love wine and if we find a comparable menu somewhere else in town we will go there instead based on the corkage fee alone."

  • "Dined here 12 times. It went from great to good and now to fair. The space is great and hence the appeal. Food portions smaller daily but finally changed the menu. Kitchen closed at 9 ??!! Lamb messy appetizer with mushy friendship fries! Pot roast tiny and cooled until dry. And everyone knows mashed potatoes with pot roast!"

  • "I loved James Republic when it first opened and I think it's been downhill every time I've visited since then. Although I loved my main course of roasted cauliflower and guinoa, the two guys with us really disliked their steaks and "baked" potatoes. The rib eye steak came sliced and the meat was tough and fatty. We did in fact tell the waiter about the steaks and, although he did comp us dessert, he did not offer to take the steaks back. And come on with those "baked" potatoes in the jar. It is like drinking a liquid potato most of which is cream and butter. I know you want to be unusual but I think you can do better than liquid potatoes. James Republic, you need to get better."

  • "I love this location! We had a beautiful dinner here. I had the cauliflower steak and it was dreamy. The party next to us was large and one guest was seated at the end of the adjacent table- so close to us that he kept hitting our table and rocking our plates. The restaurant wasn't busy so I don't know why management didn't move their table over a bit. The serve made the best of it. We plan to go back."

  • "We arrived on-time for our 7:30 Open Table reservation. We were told no less than 3 times that our table would be free soon. We were finally seated at 8:30, one hour past our reservation that wan't honored. It was my 5th time at James Republic and with us were clients who were also shocked. When a reservation is not honored by Open Table, I'll think twice about going to James Republic again. FYI: James Republic also has an outdoor dining area which cannot be used in inclimate weather. Maybe the website thought we could be seated there at our appointed time. It wan't being used that evening. There was no box to exclude this area as a choice. I suggest you provide a choice: outside OR inside dining...."

  • "The food is apparently farm to table fresh, so the menu is unique each day. On the evening that we went there the chef really put together some delicious and creative dishes. Our waitstaff was enthusiastic about the restaurant and super friendly. BTW - the craft made cocktails were execellent. I had something called a whiskey tea and my wife had a fresh pomegranate martini, both were great. I'd go there again next time I'm in Long Beach."

  • "The name promises a great dining experience. Unfortunately that was not the case. We knew we were in trouble when a simple Bailey's and coffee was one of the worst we had ever tasted. They were sent back. The chicken two of us ordered was poorly seasoned. The kimchee pork had a jasmine rice that was mushy. Now the server explained the chef's thought process behind it. It just did not translate to something edible. One would imagine that any dish with the name "kimchee" in it would have the flavor of kimchee. Nope. This is one restaurant that reads better then it tastes."

  • "I love the design and open feeling with the doors open..the whole place feels like a big patio! Would be great for summer dining. We had brunch and the food was pretty good, especially the egg dishes. The buckwheat pancakes were fine, but came with a strange nutty carmel sauce. My only complaints are 1) the waiters seemed very green and a bit clueless and 2) the espresso machine is way too loud! I would like to come back for lunch or dinner and give it a second chance, just cuz i really love the space!"
