We had reservations but still waited over 30 minutes. The food was inventive and surpassed expectations. The noise level was loud, even as the crowd thinned. The service was exemplary and I will return, but probably not on a weekend.

We were looking for someplace new to try, and wanted the whole shebang--interesting menu, great quality and flavor of food, comfortable but interesting ambience, friendly professional service. I think we found it at James Republic. The food is fresh and locally sourced, prepared by expert hands. We sat outdoors on the patio/deck, and you would think that sitting outside on 1st Street in downtown Long Beach sounds sketchy, but it was quite pleasant. There was a small street fair going on that evening, so the atmosphere was vibrant and lively. We started with a grilled brussels sprout dish that was delicious. The huz had black cod and I had short ribs. Both were succulent, flavorful and tender. I would definitely recommend it.

DINING HERE WAS A DELIGHT. GOOD FOOD, NICELY PRESENTED. THEIR GRASS FED BURGER WAS COOKED JUST THE WAY I ORDERED IT. WE ALSO ORDERED THE LUNCH SPECIAL WHICH WAS TASTY - CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP...FLAVORFUL BUT DIDN'T CARE FOR THE PUREED CONSISTENTCY, SHRIMP QUESADILLA SERVED WITH SALSA AND GAUCAMOLE, AND A COOKIE.

  • 3rd time was not a charm

This will have been the third time I have eaten here. The last two times were superb. This time, I have to say, I was greatly disappointed. I invited some out of town guests to dinner, there was six in our party. It took over an hour to receive our entree's. Our waiter was a champ about everything, however, when the food did come out, it was not all at the same time and two of the entree's (Black Cod) were overcooked. Our waiter brought the manager over, who was extremely rude and arrogant. He never apologized or offered to bring two new entree's for my friends that had the over cooked cod. Quite frankly, the mangers attitude to the whole situation left us all feeling rather displeased. I'm not sure I'll be back.

Finally, the service matched the food. The severs here are always pleasant, and the food has been excellent since the beginning; but service has often been awkward. This time, Marissa was amazing from start to finish. She paid attention and only approached our table during breaks in our conversation, never interrupting, while always being there when we needed here. She kept the drinks coming too.

My wife and I went to dinner last Sunday night for our fourth (and last) time unless management reaches out. We sat for around 7 minutes before hostess (tried her best) served us water and we're never greeted by server. Needless to say we left after @15 minutes of no server speaking to us. I guess they are doing so well they don't need an extra $150, and referrals. Good luck!

Yes, that's right. We waited over 10 minutes before we were approached by our waiter. Food was okay but not great by any means. During our meal I needed to get our or any waiter's attention but had no luck. I could see 4 of then talking but could not get any of them to make eye contact. Come to think of it my first visit to JR was not great either but that was right after they opened so I thought I give them another chance. It may be a while before I give this place another try. FYI-our reservation was on a Friday at 7:45 and the restaurant was not that busy.

Came her on a whim, enjoyed the food and atmosphere. We asked to switch to a larger table because we were to be joined by some friends and were told we could not have one (although there were several wide open less than 10 feet from us) and asked to sit at a 5 top in the bar area. That was fine even though there were six of us, but our server neglected our party most of the night because we were moved outside of his station. Food was good and the place had a nice vibe to it. Will recommend to others (but I suggest keeping your eye on your server!)

We came here for a birthday brunch and were pleasantly surprised with all aspects of this restaurant. The food had unique flavors which made dining a delight and all dishes were a perfect portion. No take home boxes and no food left on the plate, but we were all pleasantly filled. The attention to small details was also pleasing. Coffee cups with a message around the rim, water left at table in a chilled wine bottle, multiple choices of sugar in a clean modern sugar caddy. The waiter was on spot too, polite and professional with the perfect amount of checking on us. The dining experience in it's entirety was one of the best my husband and I have had in a while. We will most certainly be back !

Trendy place, comfortable atmosphere. Inventive, fresh, excellent food. Some of the service people had a bit of a "snooty" attitude... Ran out of pork chop 1 hour from opening of restaurant.. Waiter completely unapologetic about it. Would have ordered the burger, but waiter said they did not have lettuce or tomatoes... Really??....

Stayed in the hotel for a week working, and was fortunate to be there to enjoy the James Republic restaurant. All the bar staff was engaging & truly professional in their service. Huge props to Melodie, Clayton & Jonathan for (1) creating a fantastic gin cocktail for me (Melodie's Amber Beauty), then (2) being able to replicate it perfectly time after time, night after night. Would recommend this spot to anyone visiting or even just passing through downtown Long Beach.

I have had a brunch and dinner here and found the menu small, but adequate. The breakfast menu is even smaller. If you like a big American breakfast, you will be disappointing. However, what is on the menu is very good. The quiche portion is small, but delicious. Wish it came with fruit instead salad. The egg sandwich is on homemade sourdough or multi-grain toast. While there is only one piece of bacon, what was there was tasty. I didn't like the effort to get us to order at the bar. It was called "grab and go." If I wanted that I would go to McDonald's. We did get table service. The food was very good. The service is better and more polished at brunch and dinner.

Our group of 4 arrived on time and was seated promptly. We brought a bottle of wine to share but decided to order other wine first. We asked about their corkage fee and policy. We were told that it was $25 but would be waived if we bought a bottle from the restaurant. We stated that we would be ordering at least 4 glasses and asked if that would meet their criteria. The waiter came back and said yes, but only if they were all the same wines. We went back and forth with the waiter with some friendly banter about their policy hoping that either they would relax the policy and at least discount the corkage or have the manager come to the table and discuss it. Neither happened. Feeling a little under appreciated, not sure I would return.

The food turned out to be pretty good but they offer everything al a carte. You have to order the pomme frittes or any sides separately. My friend ordered a side salad with her burger and both were pretty tasty. I ordered the lox and egg scramble and it tasted great but I had to order toast separately and they charged me $2.50. When you order eggs for breakfast you don't expect to have to pay for toast with it. The service was just ok. The space is very pretty and the outdoor patio area is very nice. I would try this place again but for dinner. Maybe we just got the staff on an off morning.
