Food here is always outstanding, but this night every course was exceptional. Service always attentive and goes more than the extra mile to help. It's always fun to meet new and interesting people here, all of whom are knowledgeable about food and often erudite about many subjects.

The food here is usually excellent, but this night every course, from appetizers to dessert was superb, with some interesting flavor combinations. Wine pairings were also exceptional. Service is always outstanding, and I was at a table with some particularly interesting people.

Bad service, good food but sitting with snobby strangers. Good to try once Bc the food is always good but won't go back again. The service wasn't very accommodating considering the amount I paid. For that price I could've gone to PerSe. This was my third time here. Good to try once for experience but that's about it.

This is a very special place to dine and to enjoy various regional cuisines. We are members this year for the first time and have enjoyed eating at JBF about 4 times so far this year. The food is always special, very interesting - but the service is "spotty" and not reflective of the professional standards of the food. Sometimes there are significant time lags between courses, one evening we were there until about 11:30 and people were getting up and leaving the table to go outside between courses. The food and the presentation of the food is first class, but the coordination and the service have not always matched, which makes us think twice about attending events, particularly on a work evening.

  • Being at the James Beard House
    OpenTable Diner Since 2004VIP
    Dined on 3/2/2012
Being at the James Beard House for an event is very special, knowing that it was the home of an icon, and appreciating the fact that the foundation does wonderful things for the food community. It is a beautiful space, housing a huge cookbook collection in the library/dining room. I had to give it fair for ambiance due to the fact that the diners were packed in like sardines, especially at the cocktail portion of the meal. It was quite uncomfortable. Still glad we attended but would not return unless it was for a chef/event that had very personal meaning to us.

  • Our gang of four presented
    nancywVIP
    Dined on 2/28/2012
Our gang of four presented two serious food allergies--nuts & garlic--& we were touched & thrilled by the care taken to keep us safe from the offending items. And we were granted our request for a table for 4 near the railing, a boon to aged ears. Dining at JBH is a singular experience, & a special privilege for Greenwich Village folk who remember when James Beard was a presence at Jefferson Market. Although we had a fine time on a cold February night, I think the place is at its best when weather permits cocktails in the garden. Altogether, hospitality by the true definition. The kind & brilliant staff negotiate tight space with grace, warmth, & stunning efficiency. Thank you!

I was put in a room that was not part of the event and did not hear any music or speeches etc. There was a very nice couple there to talk with but we were all paying the price for dinner and the experience and did not get to enjoy the event completely. This other couple is one that always attends the James Beard events too. They should put NO ONE in that room. It is the room immediately to your left when you check in near the kitchen. Everyone else was upstairs so I felt completely removed from the theme and the party like atmosphere. I think the atmosphere is lovely upstairs but not downstairs. Also, it was too hot and we had to open a window.

My girlfriend and I celebrated an anniversary here and couldn't have been more pleased with our experience. This was our first dinner here so we didn't know what to expect but were blown away by the food and service. Since no meal is ever the same, I bet the quality varies but we luckily had a spectacular dinner with the theme revolving around heritage pork. Each chef created a fantastic dish using a different part of the pig and each dish was paired with a glass of champagne. I was a little hesistant that we would be sitting with a group of strangers but everyone was so friendly and fun that I forgot we all just met. My only gripe is that while serving hor dourves, the downstairs room if cramped (supposedly better when garden is open).

This was our first dinner at the Beard House.I made the reservation with some anxiety as to how my wife and I, as out-of towners, would fit in to the crowd that would be attending the event. We had a fabulous time. We met several convivial people and had a fabulous meal in the beautiful James Beard townhouse.

This was a unique experience. I would say that the place was perfect, the staff was exceptional (minus one surly waiter) and the night was remarkable. The best thing is that it will change every single time you go so theres no good way to rate this. Unlike other restaurants, you get a new chef and a new wine focus each time. Its a bit of a gamble but I think they choose their chefs with care. Our particular night.....the food was just "ok". The arizona winemaker and his pairings were amazing. No use in describing the food or wine since you will not have it again, but I will say that you should arrive at 7pm sharp to enjoy the appys, the back room gets uncomfortably crowded if they do not open the garden and the place is not "marked well" so

All James Beard House events are a wonderful way to spend the evening, but the chef/restaurant on Friday, December 16, 2011 was absolutely horrible. Comparing it to airline food would be a scourge on airline food. It was laughably bad, though, and we still had a wonderful evening, as the staff and ambiance at the Beard House is beyond amazing.

At $170 per head I expect at the very least a great meal, we attended Ale Reznik's (ex-top chef) event and while the appetizers were good the rest of the meal was pretty ordinary. I understand that the conditions are cramped but this really should be a showcase of what they can do. The service was poor, for example pouring wine into water glasses, no description of the dish. One thing I have enjoyed at James beard previously has been information on the chef and dishes, this time it was sparse to say the least So in summary it is potluck, you might have a great experience but choose carefully.

The James Beard House is not a typical restaurant so we were expecting a phenomenal meal from the guest chef. We got it. From the moment we walked in to this very welcoming house and staff, we were pampered. fed, and treated to one of the finest evenings in NYC we've ever had. Even though one of our group didn't care for venison, one of the mains that evening, everything else was so marvelous (and so was the venison for those whol like it) and just so that we all left very happy. This will become one of our traditions!

I had never heard of the JBH and was pleasantly surprised at how this establishment is run. I was invited to attend because I am a friend of the chef that was being featured and had not seen him in 20 years. When I arrived, his sister and I got together to go in and surprise him. While talking to him in the kitchen, I told him that I was a Vegan. Matt did not miss a step. Every dish that came out to the table was accompanied with a vegan version. It was some of the best vegan food I have ever had in my life not to mention that he had a set menu and he completely went out of his way to accommodate my needs. I had a blast and look forward to returning. I will be watching your website just to see how is being featured!
