The patio had a private party, so
we almost went to One Pico for a b-day brunch. SO glad we stayed here. It's obvious why this eatery enjoys such longevity. We watched James check every dish coming out of his kitchen. He was an endearing & generous host (despite his taste for atonal jazz, LOL.) We never sit indoors here, but it was sunny & cozy, the waitstaff was fun & efficient, food was a solid "A" and the bartender made a PROPER Ramos Fizz (a brunch staple they can't get right at One Pico or Ivy at the Shore.) We have no ties to this restaurant or to its owner, but we so rarely have such sincerely nice things to say about dining in our overly trendy Venice neighborhood, we felt like sharing them. Thank you again, James, good show!"

This neighborhood institution
needs a refresh. It’s like everyone has been there so long that they don’t see or taste that things are not as good as they could be. Food was not prepared with any finesse, everything was over salted, there was no presentation – the food was just slapped on the plate. Someone need to take a hard look at the interior and spruce it up. (New carpeting?! Fresh coat of paint?! Maybe wipe the chairs clean before a patron sits on them?!) You want to LOVE this place. But, currently it’s not worth it."

James Beach always has a good vibe
and is a fun place to be. The food is good, but not outstanding. The service can go either way. The last time we were there, the waiter was mindless, forgetting things right and left. But in the end it was a fun night as tends to be the case at James Beach."

Our table for 6 was very crowded
and awkwardly shaped. Some of us were crammed together, others were on a point of the table so a bit awkward. The time from ordering to serving was very slow (drinks took 15 minutes, appetizer took 20 minutes and dinner was 45 minutes AFTER appetizer). Someone else's appetizers were served to our table and we all looked perplexed until the server came back and took them away. The calamari came out cold and without a dipping sauce. 3 meals came out ahead of the other three meals and they were also missing a component of the meal. The bathrooms are unisex and even early in the evening were very dirty."

We celebrated our post Valentine's
dinner and we loved it. The location is superb. Food was delicious. Service was great and friendly. This place is very popular so arriving early (6pm) was a good idea. We had a leisurely 2 hour dinner. Very nice!"
Dined on 2/15/2014
We were a party of 7. Seated
promptly at our reservation time, in the covered patio area. We chose this restaurant because it had lots of vegetarian options (2 in our party including the birthday person are vegetarian). The service was attentive without being annoying. Best dishes of the night: Mykonos appetizer, NY steak, truffle fries, and Apple crisp dessert."

I have been going to James beach
for years now. They always have great food and friendly service. My favorite here is the fish tacos which are awesome."
Dined on 2/7/2014
the Hostess Lindsey was great as
well the service in general. will be back to James Beach."
Dined on 2/4/2014
Both the food and the service were
great. The quiche was outstanding. I would definitely go there again."

Very disappointing!!! We were a
table of 6 people and everyone had received their food and had finished before I received my food, the waiter was no where to be found most of the time, we had to ask him four times before we even received our chips that we had ordered! I cannot tell you in words how HORRIBLE this service was!!!!! The food was nothing special and my husband complained how little was on his plate, he ordered the fish taco's, there was a small piece if fish for the taco's! He was starving when we left and so was I! It was very over priced as well!!!"

Interesting ambiance on the patio
with overhead lights made from Surf Shorts. Made for ongoing jokes at our table as we gazed up into the leg holes... Service on the night we were there was inconsistent, Food was good. Great Kale salad."
Dined on 1/17/2014
They know what they do well and do
it! It is one of our "go to" restaurants. We are never disappointed. The food is fresh, and the menu seasonal. The wine list is large and carefully chosen. Even the lower priced wines are very good."
Dined on 1/11/2014
The food, service were wonderful.
I took a friend here for her birthday & was pleasantly surprised at what a delightful surprise find this restaurant Was. It's a gem!!!"
Dined on 1/5/2014
We went friday night for 4 at 8
pm. It was loud (the bar scene gets rowdy outside). The food was not good, soggy tortilla, cold tofu not fully cooked. 3 meals came and we had to wait for the 4th (after we asked about it) so our food was cold. No good wines and not well made drinks. I wouldn't go back or recommend it for dinner."
Dined on 1/3/2014
James Beach has a delicious 17th
anniversary menu so you can celebrate with them. But more importantly, for a restaurant to stay vibrant for that long, means the food, service, and feeling is right on."
Dined on 1/3/2014
Food was really good, service was
good, and we could hear hear each other talk! Can't wait to go back!!"

I have been to James Beach several
times and really like the menu, the location, the staff and the vibe of the restaurant. Make sure to ask for the desert that is not on the menu....ice cream with terrific sauce."

just love this restaurant! the
food is wonderful, great neighborhood find, james is the perfect host! i will be back many times :)"
Dined on 11/27/2013
Love this place. Great food. Fast
& friendly service. Fantastic 1/2 off wine nights. Never fails to deliver a great night out, whether a small group or large."
Dined on 11/25/2013
My husband and I always try to
have a meal here when we travel to Los Angeles, and over the years we have been delighted to find that the ambiance, food and service have remained so dependably high. While the menu is not overly extensive, there are always enough good choices. The waiters are knowledgable and patient but not intrusive. It is a great place to have an intimate meal, but also not too loud to make conversation impossible if you are with a larger group. Highly recommended!"

I travel on business a lot and
have lots of experience dining out, and this one rates up there with the better ones. I don't know if I'd consider it at the top of the list for "fine-dining" , but I will say that the ambience was really, really, really nice. I was there with a colleague for Taco Tuesday and had the Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos. They were excellent - the soft taco shells were nice and warm, the salsa and guac on the side were so yummy, and the fish was done perfectly. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Service was great, too. I'll definitely be back when I'm in town again. I hope I'm there on a Tuesday, but since these tacos are on the main menu anyway, I guess I'll be in luck no matter what!"

Dined on a Wednesday evening with
a New York, Italian foodie. Great table on the patio. Attentive server recommended specialty cocktails delivered quickly and gave us space to peruse the menu and enjoy our drinks. The crudités is a nice complimentary appetizer with a delicious dipping sauce. We ordered the jumbo shrimp tacos and flat iron steak served medium rare perfectly charred as ordered with grilled spinach and smooth mashed potatoes. Both dishes seasoned well and delicious. We split a key lime pie dessert as flavorful as any in Miami Beach. Highly recommend this restaurant..."

Two quick thoughts on James'
Beach: 1) The food was very good. Party of four and we all enjoyed our meals. No complaints. 2) The food is incredibly over priced. I would not recommend James' Beach for that reason. They are famous for their fish tacos, which are good, but there are better in LA and they cost much less."
Dined on 11/9/2013
Definitely not impressed by James'
Beach. The fish tacos mentioned in "I Love You, Man"? - $25. $25 for fish tacos???? Come on - I don't think so. How about waiting an hour and a half for your food while everyone around you that was seated well after you is already halfway through their meals? Any attention from your server? Apologies for the service? Nope. Definitely not worth the trek to Venice. Too bad I couldn't get a reservation at Barnyard or Gjelina or ANYWHERE ELSE that sounded like a decent place. Ugh, never again. Westside trash with upscale prices. Blech. So upset that nobody cared to do anything to make any amends for having us sit there for a hour and a half waiting for food. We even had to ask for bread."

This was our first time at this
restaurant. We had many questions and the waitress was very helpful. There were several vegetarian choices for my wife and many seafood options for me. The food was high quality and uniquely prepared. I highly recommend James' Beach. Watch out for the parking situation though - we parked our car at a metered spot across the street and the "valet parking" person came running over to insist on parking the car. Turns out he didn't move the car at all but we still had to pay him $7. Ridiculous. Better to find a parking spot on a nearby street but it's tough."

Great menu, everything was
delicious, especially the bloody marys! Nice presentation, too! Easy, casual at its best."
Dined on 9/22/2013
This is my fifth visit to James'
Beach and it was another great dining experience. This time I finally ordered the Mahi Mahi tacos - and they were fantastic. Now I see why everyone raves about them. The great thing about James' Beach is that you can either dine indoors in the quieter more formal dining room - or outside in the casual patio - depending on your mood and the vibe of the place."

mahi mahi tacos and the ginger
mohito. to DIE for. DELICIOUS!"

Very nice restaurant half way down
between pier and Muscele Beach at Venice. Perfect for outdoor dining, quiet, nice waiter suggesting the right things to chose. Light and easy food nicely prepared and served. Would definitely rate best in this environment."

...Have been frequenting this
restaurant since it was West Beach--never disappoints--always good food, excellent service, and the best bartender in town--Dennis forever!"
Dined on 9/9/2013
Really fun atmostphere with a
great wine list! They have 1/2 off bottle nights and normally if my boyfriend and I were to get two glasses of wine each, it would have cost $56. Normally the bottle of wine is $52...but since it was on the 1/2 off bottle night we ended up getting the entire bottle for only $30! I highly recommend the rotisserie chicken tacos or the sliders. Fun staff, fun place to eat. Good for a romantic night with ya boo, or a group of friends."

Nice atmosphere. Great service
(thank you Bishop). Near the beach."

We've been regulars at James Beach
for years although I haven't been there since probably 2011. The service was bad, hostess non-existent and food terrible (so bad they actually reported me as a "no show" to Open Table). In the past, I've recommended Coast Toast as the best french toast in L.A., but no longer. It was almost inedible. My son's burger, ordered medium, was cooked within an inch of its life. Not one tiny speck of pink. I practically had to get up from the table myself to let the kitchen know what I wanted to order. I'm not sure if they've had a change of management or what has happened, but it's a loss for sure. Won't ever go back."
Dined on 7/28/2013
I went with my family including
two young kids. The food was good and the service was great! We sat in the dining room which was mellow and kid friendly, but also had romantic charm if that's the route you are taking. With an outdoor eating/drinking area, I will definitely have to go back for a grown up only evening!"
Dined on 7/21/2013
The food here is consistently
wonderful. We especially love the brisket soft tacos and the shrimp soft tacos - yum! We continue to bring friends and always get a great response from them as well, with comments about them wanting to come back. Really a gem!"
Dined on 7/21/2013
It is like "Cheers", where
everybody knows your name ,due to the warmth James exudes. However the twist is the artsy, sophisticated feel from co-owner,Danial and the Venice Vibe. Always fantastic feel good food and dining. Perfect for all big events. My kitchen in the hood."
Dined on 7/11/2013
Food was not good - poor service
provided in trying to remedy the situation Would not recommend"
Dined on 7/6/2013
Everything was perfect from the
table being ready the minute we walked in to the servers, the atmosphere, the food and the drinks! Going back before we leave the area."
Dined on 7/6/2013
Polite service, good food, not
rushed, comfortable setting. Good neighborhood, casual, "go-to" spot."
Dined on 6/23/2013
Came here for the same reason most
people do... For the fish tacos. They were great as always and we enjoyed a nice beer list while we ate them."
