My husband and I both have October birthdays and our son was born last October. This was our first night out together, just the two of us, in almost a year! We were celebrating our birthdays by going to a hockey game and decided to make a reservation at Jaleo. The food is amazing! Every ingredient was fresh and delicious. Perfectly cooked. Fernando was our server and he was excellent. He helped us pick a lovely bottle of wine and explained the menu to us. He was very pleasant and attentive without hovering. We will definitely go back, especially because it's so close to the metro and Verizon Center!

The food is good. We normally dine inside, but decided to dine outside this time. The noise was so loud due to the street traffic. The tuna tartare was literally the smallest dish I have ever shared. Definitely not something that is shareable.

For the food alone, I would probably give this place 3 stars. While the menu has wide variety and a lot of delicious items, I think a lot of the stuff is overpriced. What saved the experience for me was the outstanding waiter we had. It was our first time here and the menu is huge, so he devoted five to ten minutes to talking us through the menu and pointing out his favorites for every category (and he described each dish's preparation and flavors in great detail- impressive!). What we ordered was largely based upon his recommendations, and we were not disappointed with the flavors of those dishes (but again- overpriced!). Not only were his recommendations great, but his overall service was excellent as well.

Thank you Jose Garces for spreading tapas and great food across the country. Loved Amada in Philadelphia, and now recently dined at Jaleo. The Pisto manchego con huevos - traditional stewed vegetables topped with fried quail eggs, may not sound like much, but it was absolutely delicious! The creaminess of the little egg yolks oozing onto the Spanish-ratatouille was a sensory sensation. Great food, great service, fun atmosphere. The only thing I would say pass to is the Chocolate Hazelnut Cake. It was bland. The hazelnut ice cream with it though was delicious.

I really want to like Jaleo. Probably because of Jose Andres. Think the world of him. But the food here just doesn't live up to his other restaurants. And the service is ok, but you definitely get the feeling that Jaleo has become more of a tourist mecca rather than a PQ local haunt. It's not that I can point to a specific shortcoming. It's just that the end product doesn't end up meeting expectations. Notable exceptions for us this particular night were the liquid olives, and the apple and fennel salad. They were up to Andres standard. It's also pricey for what you get. I'd go if you haven't before to get the experience. And the new renovations have cut down on the noise some. But head to Oyamel or Zatinyah instead otherwise.

First time at Jaleo - highly recommended by several people. Ordered quite a few dishes, half of them being the top recommendations of their staff. What a disappointment. The super special 'can only be imported by our chef' swine was a snooze-fest. The potatoes with garlic mayo had a big blob of mayo in the center portion so you either got a ton of it, or none at all. Their version of calamari had more bites than expected and was tender and not rubbery at all, the flan was good with great whipped cream, hazelnut cake was a huge let down, hazelnut ice cream was fantastic. Bacon wrapped figs were great. Goat cheese with fig jam was a small portion and so-so at best. We felt our $115 (2 people, 1 bottle of fizzy water, 2 desserts) were wasted.

Our family with school-age kids sat at one of the foosball dining tables. We played throughout the meal and had a blast. Service was attentive. Food was delicious all around with a variety of meats, cheeses, croquetas, and veggie dishes. My kids loved the croquetas, and I loved the patatas bravas. For 4 people with lots of food, drinks for adults and desserts, it was a little pricey - $190 plus tip. But for a nice night out where you want to include kids and keep them happy, it offers something for everyone.

Looking at the restaurant... it appears a bit casual: simple chairs, a somewhat disheveled interior design, outside seating immediately along a street and passers-by. However, the food, the service, the wine list - all exceptional. The "private" room near the front of the restaurant - an area enclosed by a window to the street and micro-chains to the restaurant - is quite a nice touch.

This is our first visit to Washington, DC. A friend of our son recommended Jaleo's so we made a reservation. Our daughter met us and joined us for dinner. I had never had tapas before. We had studied the menu before we arrived and had an idea of some of the things we wished to try. It was a lot of fun, interesting and well prepared food, with great service. We could go back again.

Went to Jaleo DC the last weekend of September for a birthday dinner. Overall a wonderful experience. Great Chinatown location. As we had reservations (as it was Saturday night), we were seated as soon as we arrived. I would recommend Gazpacho estilo Algeciras, Bérico de bellota mini hamburguesas and Patatas bravas. We ordered the $55/per person tapas spread and did not regret it. We usually just order off the menu, but I wanted to see what the restaurant felt that their best tapas were-and we were not disappointed. The opening ham course came; good. The pricey wine came. Then the salad came; good. About 4 bites into the salad, the first two hot courses came in rapid succession, not allowing anytime to finish the courses that we had started; not good at all. We sent back the second warm course, saying they needed to slow down. Well, they did, in fact everyone disappeared for a half an hour. Appetites were lost. But at least we had a chance to be "entertained" by the people SCREAMING over their foosball game. This isn't the atmosphere that I want when I spend $160 (before tip) for a light meal for 2 people. Sometimes restaurants recover from bad starts; this time they didn't, and didn't really seem to care about it.

Bottom line: the food is excellent. There is a huge variety of tapas suited to every taste, and you will have no shortage of delicious options on the menu (though I have to admit, the portion size seems to have diminished). However, the ambience has definitely changed since I used to visit this restaurant 5+ years ago. It is catering to a hip, younger crowd, which could be good or bad, depending on what you're looking for. The front of the restaurant now boasts several foosball tables (underneath the glass dining table) - which is good for partiers, annoying for diners. The noise level is also a bit on the high side, though not outstanding. The drink and wine list is extensive. The service was considerably slower than what I remembered.

...in my rankings: I'm not a fan of the redecoration. And why, oh why, doesn't Jaleo still bring that chewy crusty bread, with olive oil for dipping? It was one of the best things about the meal and I'd gladly pay for it. But it's no longer available. Even a la carte. Our server just looked puzzled, and pointed us to the "pan de cristal con tomate," which is toasted and brushed with tomato and not at all the same thing. But otherwise Jaleo proved again why it's one of my favorite places. Four of our five tapas (old favorites potato omelet, braised onion with Valdeon cheese and pine nuts, spinach with raisins, creamy rice with mushrooms) were superb; our fifth, the zucchini and roasted red peppers, left us underwhelmed. Batted .800.

The tables are close together, so that one feels as if one is evedropping on conversations if it's busy. The food is inventive and well The menu is creative and the food is beautifully prepared and presented. We had vegetarian and vegan items. The apple fennel salad was outstanding, as was the cold wildberry soup with ice cream. Other favorites were the gazpacho and the spinach with raisins and pine nuts - espinaca catalana. We had to ask three times for bread, which apparently comes without asking only with certain menu items. This seems rather stingy when paying $130 for a party of four who didn't have anything from the bar or wine list. The tables are so close together that one feels as if one is eavesdropping on adjacent tables.
