Diner Reviews
  • "I have been many time and love the food, the atmosphere and the service...."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "the beauty of the small plate is that you can have more. The fun here is trying out new things, and after many visits there are still are lots more to try."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "The title of this review says it all but I must type 50 characters so I'll just add, "Don't miss it!""
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "Awesome decor, great taste combination. Fantastic sangría."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "We had friends in from out of town, wanted a restaurant with ambience, good food, where we weren't rushed, and could enjoy conversation. We got it all at Jaleo, except we had exceptional . We started with the gazpacho...delicious... and then ordered a couple of plates to share at a time, stopping when we were comfortably full! We had 8 small plates and, while all were delicious, we all agreed that the green beans plate with apricots and grapes, small pieces of ham was among the best. The skirt steak was perfection, and for dessert, the flan. We had a wonderfully attentive waiter. What more could we ask for a memorable evening out."

  • "We hadn't been to Jaleo in a few months and an out of town guest wanted to eat there, and obliged. We had fond memories, but it was even better than we had recalled. The food was excellent, the atmosphere energetic but still reasonable for conversation, the service was attentive and helpful. We are looking forward to going again soon."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "We had an 8:15 reservation and were not seated until 8:30. Service lagged throughout the evening."
    Dined on 4/10/2014
  • "Server was distracted, served others first, never brought bread, and we had to prompt him several times."
    Dined on 4/10/2014
  • "The fried oxtail is rich, creamy, and flavorful. Trust me you'll love it! Only the cramped seating at this Jaleo makes me withhold giving it a perfect rating. Your packed together and so you'll share conversations."
    Dined on 4/9/2014
  • "Filled up too soon on the early courses. I think we missed some of the best dishes!"
    Dined on 4/8/2014
  • "We were new to the tapas scene. The waiter was very helpful in recommending a strategy, as well as individual menu items. Everything was delicious! Way cool bathrooms as well!"

  • "One of the best restaurants in DC. Had a great meal. So much variety, so delicious. We love Jaleo!"
    Dined on 4/7/2014
  • "The food was superb, as was the wine. A bit noisy, but the waiter was energetic, knowledgable and service was great. Would definitely go again."

  • "Three generations of our family met for dinner at Jaleo and had a fabulous time ordering a variety of tapas. Our waiter was very helpful and encouraged us to not feel rushed to order. We all enjoyed tasting each other's choices. We will go there again when we get the chance to get together."
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "Really good tapas-great ingredients, preparations & presentations. Servers attentive & helpful but not intrusive. Nice cocktail & wine list. Good energy vibe, fun decor & comfortable lighting. Wonderful place to go after Shakespeare Theater, Verizon Center, etc. One of Jose Andres gems and always reliably enjoyable."
    Dined on 4/6/2014
  • "LOVED the food at Jaleo and the whole experience overall. But I shelled out so much dough that I might have to fast this week."
    Dined on 4/6/2014
  • "Sat at the bar after a movie at E St Cinema. Each had a gin and tonic (jose's pick and london dry). Oxtail fritters, flat bread with tomato, iberico ham, and olive oil. Liquid olives. Roasted mushrooms with garlic, lemon, and olive oil. Awesome food. Great atmosphere! Lot's of fun. Perfect end to a great date night!"

  • "Inspired by Chef Andres' PBS television show we found his Jaleo restaurant to be as vibrant as his personality. The 'Jaleo Experience' menu selection was more than a dinner. It was an 'event'. All the little details made this dinner stand out among other dinner experiences. Everything from the super-large ice cubes to the acrylic shoe serving dish accentuated the exotic flavors of Spanish cooking."

  • "Great food, poor service. The waiters are not very friendly or knowledgeable .The waiters are anoying picking up plates 20 times per minute even though we told them we want to keep plates for the sauces. They need training to make suggestions other than the most obvious. The places offers great dishes but waiters do not really recommend to customers other than bellota or the most expensive in the menu. We made reservations a month ago and they put us at communal table. When we agreed to wait to get seated to a different one the waiter almost wanted us to empty the table and keep waiting standing. He was very rude."

  • "Awesome food. Great service. We eat here every time we go to DC"

  • "Long wait even with reservation but very good food."

  • "Wait staff was super attentive with clearing plates and serving. Waitress was very nice and attentive, but a little shy with information. Didn't ask of we had ever been there, or if we knew how the menu worked (tapas and we had not been there before), how many dishes a table our size would need. We did the asking and she did the answering. Fine and happy, just should have been the other way around. Food was magnificent, loved the festive, quirky decor.hate the blowback chairs."

  • "Fun place to go with friends for an evening of upscale dining full of surprising tastes. Jose Andres doesn't disappoint!"
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "The service was exceelent, our table was ready within 15 min of the time requested. Food was great. The place was crowded and noisy and hopping, but we were given a quiet corner table wehre we could talk. Just what we wanted."
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "If you want to wait 40 minutes for a drink, go to Jaleo. When servers get really busy, managers should pitch in and help take orders. At Jaleo, they won't do this. And they get super annoyed if you ask them to. Bottom line, we sat there with no drinks forever, some of our orders took over an hour, it was terrible."
    Dined on 4/3/2014
  • "Overall food quality was great but I have to say all of us thought it was too expensive. Service tough to evaluate with many different servers bringing food through out night and when a water glass fell and broke on table hard to get someone to deal with it. They did but no one stepped up right away."
    Dined on 4/1/2014
  • "First time here since they redecorated. Now looks more Mexican than Spanish with many bright colors and busy patterns. Not to our taste but obviously some people like it. Food and service are still excellent as always. Very convenient to Shakespeare and Woolly Mammoth theaters."
    Dined on 4/3/2014
  • "My wife's favorite tapa at Jaleo, where we have eaten innumerable times. was tomato bread with manchego cheese which was priced at around $9,00, Now you can order the tomato bread for $8.50 but the manchego is available only as a whole plate of cheese (for $14.00) OR as part of another plate with apples. SO, to replicate the former tomato bread with manchego, you'd now have to pay $22.50! We asked the strolling manager if we were interpreting the menu correctly and he said yes, we were. It strikes me as outrageous that this evolution has occurred at what was once our favorite restaurant. (BTW, the croquettes with which we normally start meals at Jaleo were not hot when they were served.) Chef Andres has now spread himself too thin."

  • "This restaurant is our favorite. We live in Manassas, Virginia and when ever we go to DC we always try to eat at this restaurant. We have never had a bad experience here."
    Dined on 3/30/2014
  • "This was our fist visit to Jaleo and we are already planning when we can go back. The food was delicious and the service was above par. Our waitress was helpful, polite, and very pleasant. I went with my son and we both ordered 2 plates each to share. We knew the portions were "small" and thought we would order more once we finished our initial order. Did not need to - we were more than satisfied (although we did leave room for dessert - YUMMY)."

  • "Good opportunity to sample as much or as little as one wants before going to the theater next door, The Server was very understanding of our time constraint."
    Dined on 3/30/2014
  • "We treated a nephew visiting DC to Sunday lunch. The three of us spent a pleasant two hours while we polished off tapas, a carafe of sangria, coffee and dessert. It's a perfect place to go to catch up with out of town family and friends. It's lively but quiet enough to converse. Menu has something for everyone. Preparation and service are flawless."

  • "Jaleo, like its neighbor Oyamel, is always near-perfect, with terrific service, excellent food in every category, and a fun vibe. We were stunned when we left and realized we had talked and eaten and wined for four hours! The three of us were satisfied and pleased in every way. Thank you for making it always great to be at Jaleo."
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "Jaleo is one of my regular restaurants in Penn Quarter and Bethesda. As usual, the food was very good, the service excellent, and the experience very enjoyable."
    Dined on 3/26/2014
  • "I've never had tapas in Spain as good as the ones at Jaleos. The patatas bravas are special as is the quail and the variety of good tapas unrivaled. The pineapple mojito is worth trying."
    Dined on 3/26/2014
  • "The food was delicious. Our waiter was very helpful. We had been before and had some experience with tapas, but the additional assistance in spotting the best dishes on the menu was incredibly helpful."
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "Reservation was for 10:15pm. We arrived at 10 and were told the table wasn't ready. We went to the bar for a drink and then went back to the hostess at10:10 to let her know we were at the bar. At 10:35 I saw I had 2 texts and a missed call to let us know the table was ready (one at 10:20, one at 10:35). We went to the hostess stand and were asked "did you get our text message?" I replied that I had, but that I was not told that we would be texting so I wasn't checking my phone. My compliant is that 1) we were at the bar (and told the hostess this) so they should have walked over and told us the table was ready 2) if you are going to use texting to communicate the table is ready, you should tell your guests so they check their phone."

  • "My friend and I went before a play for a 5:15 reservation. We were interested in the pre-theater menu, but it wasn't available on Fridays, because apparently no one goes to the theater on Fridays. We ended up spending $40 each for food and left still hungry. While the food was good, I miss the Jaleo of yesteryear, where I could get a filling meal and tasty dessert for less than the surrounding restaurants. I wish we had just gone to Brasserie Beck."

  • "I had a great dinner at Jaleo. The food was good to great and I look forward to trying more dishes. We were seated near the window which was fortunate. The place would be way too loud for me at the center of the room"

  • "Chef Jose Andres has out together an extensive, delicious menu of authentic Spanish tapas. House-made chorizo from Iberico pork melts in your mouth, jurel en escabeche exploding with flavor, and a well-balanced house sangria were some highlights from this visit. Come with a group and try one of their awesome paellas!"
