Diner Reviews
  • "I arrived early but was treated very well. Thanks for an amazing experience."

  • "We really love the Jaleo downtown, so when we had guests from out of town and could not get in to that branch, we decided to give the Crystal City location a try. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. The food was not bad, but it definitely was a step below the food at the downtown branch. However, the service was the main problem. Despite asking for replacement napkins after a spill, it took a reminder to bring them. In addition, it took asking for knives and serving spoons before they were brought-needs were not anticipated. However, the most annoying part of the service was the aggressive clearing of plates. The bus staff hovered and repeatedly cleared plates without asking before we were done. In summary-we will not return."

  • "What a joy to have Jaleo in Crystal City. We have been here several times and I am pretty sure there is not a bad choice on the menu. It's a tapas place, so ideally everyone orders 1-2 dishes and shares. We found that 5 items plus dessert was plenty for 3 people. And there are some reasonably priced good wines as well. The end result was a wonderful dinner for 3 with wine for less than $200, including tip & taxes. Our dishes included Torta Pascualete (sheep's milk cheese and toast), Butifarra (pork sausage), Conejo (rabbit) and mini-burger sliders. These are not necessarily recommendations...only samples of the many goodies the menu has to offer. You really can't go wrong here. Great service, too, and outdoor tables (weather permitting)."

  • "tapas are fantastic. Mojitos are delicious. had chicken paella - was incredible"

  • "My recent experience - to watch the World Cup final - was not so good in that the feed to the TV screen was poor and kept cutting off. Definitely a disappointment to watch a sports final that happens every four years and have a tv that doesn't work properly. Plus we couldn't hear the commentary. Still, no complaints about the food, which is our family's favorite in the Washington area."

  • "So I have been to the Jaleo DC location many times, and at the Crystal City location I have had about the same experience. Great food, great ambiance. The servers at Crystal City are perhaps less consistent with their service so its necessary to order a bit more at first versus at the DC location, but it's still an amazing place. 3.9/5 stars, for sure."

  • "My husband & I were in DC for museum-going & specifically stayed in Crystal City because Jaleo CC was the only one of Jose Andres' restaurants with a reservation available at the time we wanted. We had previously eaten at one of the restaurants close to Verizon Center downtown. The service was exceptional (TUM) & all the food & wine terrific. We will definitely try other restaurants in Andres' group."

  • "My second time here, the wine and cocktails were excellent. The bacon wrapped dates were pretty good too. However, the entrée left us with a bad taste. Ordered Paella with shrimp and calamari, but had a strong taste of fish stock....it just overpowered the dish. Disappointed...."

  • "Underwhelmed and overpriced.Have eaten tapas in Barcelona and these don't come close the the real thing."

  • "The bar menu from 4:30 to 7:00 is awesome. About $3, $4 a plate. Croquettes, dates wrapped in bacon, shrimps, cured meats ... if you hit this spot at the right time you get the trifecta of cheap good fast food. The "salt air" margarita is awesome, it's a bit of salt foam with every sip. The quintessential bar food experience, perfect for after-theatre noshing."

  • "We spent three hours chatting and trying different tapas including the calamare, a wonderful seafood soup, bacon wrapped dates, an incredible honey eggplant, garlic potatoes, cheeses, meats, and an out of this world garlic grapefruit ice cream desert. Wines and liquors were excellent. Manager Horie reminded me of a NYC fine dining restauranteur. Terrific experience."

  • "The food is excellent, the service starts strong, but once the first few plates are served we don't see our server again until all of the plates are out and finished. We eat at Jaleo every few months, and almost every time have the same experience, whether the restaurant is crowded or not. It's tapas, it would be nice to be able to add plates mid meal. A word of advice, order whatever you think you might want while you have the chance, at the start of the meal. Otherwise you will leave hungry."

  • "The service was excellent. I did not like one of the tapas and a new one was immediately given to me."

  • "Enjoyed a great early dinner there with family and was having a great time already when the waiter brought over two complimentary desserts . The kids at the table...their eyes lit up and dug right in. We were so impressed that we had to go up and talk to the manager that the waiter really did go above & beyond...something you just don't see often enough. He was already doing a great job, but he was so great the little kids at the table and then the desserts; we couldn't say enough nice things about him. The manager came over after we went and talked to him and he thanked us for taking the time to bring this to his attention. Just a great time all around from start to finish."

  • "We were very disappointed in our recent dining experience. The service was very slow and the food was average. We arrive about 20 minutes early for our reservation but had called ahead to let them know. We were willing to wait at the bar if needed but the hostess said they were ready for us. They sat us at the table, gave us water and menus then we did not see a waitress for at least 10 minutes. We finally placed our drink order and it was another 15 minutes for us to receive our drinks, beer and sangria. The rest of the meal continued at about the same pace, a lot of waiting and looking for wait staff. I had ordered a 2nd glass of wine and finally gave up and asked to have the order cancelled as we were ready to leave. Won't go again."

  • "Service was great, food did not take long to get to my group of three, food was delicious, and nobody tried to hurry us out. A little pricey, but the food is high quality and portion controlled (ideal for lunch). You definitely get what you pay for at Jaleo's and it is a great place for lunch."

  • "There was a group of 4 of us. Each of us found something that we liked on the menu. It is an extensive menu with a broad range of options. All the food was delicious. The waiter was friendly, but had to be reminded of a few things and we had to ask very specific questions to get what we wanted."

  • "We enjoyed the Sunday paella special. Our meal started with a gazpacho with a nice zest followed by a salad....our paella was taking a bit longer than it should so the gracious manager brought us this delightful bread with tomatoes on it. Apparently the bread is par-baked in Spain, frozen and shipped here...yum yum. Delightful flavor from the tomatoes and just right crispieness of the bread crust. We enjoyed the vegetable paella with a rich mushroom taste, it was so good. Our meal concluded with flan for dessert. Be sure to try the sangria!"

  • "This was our third visit to Jaleo. We celebrated a high school graduation with family friends. We did the classic tasting menu for the 7 of us which allowed to sample close to 17 dishes! Every dish was well seasoned and temperature appropriate. It was a great balance of veggies and proteins. The staff was very responsive to requests for more of something. There was more food than we could finish so they boxed up the bits at the end. The flan was like silk and a great way to end the meal. We would do it again."

  • "I have eaten at this restaurant several tomes and unfortunately this occasion was not the best in terms of the food. Had the paella with pork ribs. The rice was not properly cooked and the pork robes were sparse in number and we're quite tough and chewy."

  • "I love Jaleo, especially the Crystal City location. The food is always fantastic and, even as a vegetarian, there are always great options. Especially in comparison to the Jaleo in Chinatown, this one is always on top of its service. There's a steady stream of customers, but I don't wait when I have a reservation, orders are taken quickly (though I've never felt rushed if I still want time to think about it), and food comes out in steady waves. Tapas lends itself to this sort of flow, but the restaurant does a good job of managing so that our table of 4 that has 16 dishes doesn't get overwhelmed with everything at once. It is a bit pricey, but totally worth it for a special evening!"

  • "We had the pleasure of dining at Jaleo Crystal City 3 times in one week while we were visiting the DC area.We were hooked on our first visit! Having spent a couple of weeks in Barcelona a few years ago, we love the tapas tradition. Not since that trip have we had the sort of foods we fell in love with in Barcelona including the divine Jamon Iberico Fermin. The service, food, wine and cocktails, were all excellent, but what really put it over the top was meeting the General Manager, Mayu Horie. Jaleo should crown her the Queen of Service! She is genuinely enthusiastic about everything having to do with Jaleo, treated us to some special dishes, and even gave us a thank you note and a lovely bottle of cava on our last visit. She is the best!"

  • "Stopped here for dinner once again while on crystal city. Food is is but not superb. What will keep us from coming back is the outrageously slow service."

  • "Went for daughter's graduation dinner. Food was great. The service was excellent and very helpful. We had a great time."

  • "Except, notably, this restaurant among all of them still has the fabulous, legendary Basque cake on its menu that is gone from all the other Jaleos. I will probably make this my Jaleo #1 for that reason. Other than that, it's the same great tapas. I love this place, after 20 years the shine is still there."

  • "We came here for Father's Day, with little experience of tapas. I was worried about my daughter (11) finding things she would like to eat, but she tried everything and liked it all! I think the shrimp (very, very famous) and the chicken fritters were our favorites. EVERYTHING was delicious. The desserts are not to be missed."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "The server was very attentive and could suggest the fried calamari as a replacement for the fried shrimp not on the menu. Calamari best we have ever eaten, but we missed the shrimp. As always a treat. Food delicious, have a few favorites and try something new every time."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "We ordered the rossejat expecting for it have calamari in the dish as the menu described. However, there were shrimp pieces in the dish instead, with the manager explaining the the calamari is only in the broth. Our waitress was also not very attentive, taking more than 15 minutes for us to place our order through her, and did not check back in on us when the entree arrived."

  • "Always a favorite spot for me, the servings are the perfect size for groups. Everything tasted wonderfully, was presented well, and came out in a timely manner. Service was good, and sitting outside on the perfect day makes it all the more better dining experience."

  • "We had wonderful food and great service at Jaleo. Every small plate is a new food experience. Geoffrey Zakarian, chose the Jaleo paella as "The best thing I ever ate." We will be returning to this restaurant! "

  • "As always, the food was outstanding. The service was uneven in timing, though the wait staff were perfect. It was difficult to hear the server over the din of the music. This is one of my favorite restaurants."

  • "This time I had lunch with clients and we shared a bunch of tapas and some desserts. They loved it and it was very affordable for a large group as well."

  • "I had dinner at Jaleo Crystal City with a few friends visiting from out of town. It was my first time here, and was recommended to me by colleagues who have been here multiple times. I was told it was a great place, and I completely agree. What I liked about it was the ambience (just perfect for a dinner or lunch with a bunch of friends - energetic and attitude-free) and of course the food. The tapas choices were plentiful and all delicious. We tried about 10 of these and also got a gigantic paella - all of which were delicious. But the best part was our waiter. He knew how each thing was made and what wines to pair tem with. The food came at a relaxed tempo, and they changed our plates several times. I think, a bit pricey but I'll be back!"
