Diner Reviews
  • "Nobody knows about this place as a Bethesda brunch spot. Maybe that's a good thing. Food was brought out promptly, and everything was delicious. The server's recommendations were excellent. We all especially loved the pulpo. "

  • "We had great food and even better service. She was helpful in her suggestions of food and wine and made fantastic coffee to our specifics."

  • "Although we had reservations for 4 lunch and requested an outdoors table, a party of 2 immediately ahead of us with no reservations was seated at the only remaining outside table for 4 - even though there were plenty of tables for two outside. When we asked the maitre d' whether they could be reseated (since they hadn't even settled in), he declined. As a consequence, we had to sit indoors. Beyond that, service was sloppy - we had to repeatedly remind the waiter of dishes that hadn't been served. Nevertheless, the food was very good. And since we were among the few people who had to sit indoors, the noise level was quiet."

  • "My husband and I have been to Spain 5 times with friends. Jaleo's is the most authentic Spanish food we have found in the Baltimore/Washington area. The food is always fresh, hot and served with a smile. Try the gazpacho, gambas, pulpo, pan con tomate et jamon. Everything is delicious!!! Service is wonderful. Try Washington and Bethesda. Both are great."

  • "Out of town visitors always love Jaleo and this visit was no exception. People from all over the country and everyone found something they truly enjoyed. We've found that taking people to Jaleo or Zaytinya always receives rave reviews!"

  • "As always, the tapas at Jaleo were great. My buddies and I, who have been coming to Jaleo together since 1991, had some of our standards (calamari, chorizo) and tried some new dishes. The cauliflower with olives was fantastic! For years, we had Apple Charlottes for dessert, but it was no longer on the menu. The chocolate mousse made a wonderful substitute. I hadn't been to this location since they remodeled, and the new decor is fresh and lively. Another wonderful experience and a tried and true venue."

  • "Food is the main draw here; wines are great, while cocktails just so-so, service is pleasant, though a bit sluggish on a busy weekend night, and atmosphere is loud and lively."

  • "This was my second trip to Jaleo. We have always gone with large groups so we can share the Tapas and enjoy a little bit of everything. It is a busy place and better for groups than couples. The service was good although the waitress was trying to serve several large tables and didn't check on us as much as I would have liked (not her fault). The Sangria was okay but rather weak and the wine portions were downright stingy. The food, however, was superb. The portions were perfect for our group of 5 and everyone liked everything. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Every one of our 5 plates came encrusted with salt. Even after I asked the waiter to please have the chef reduce the salt I was still crunching on salt. The beef tasted like blue cheese, the scallops like salt and the vegetables were obviously cooked with salt and then finished in salt."

  • "Tapas, Spanish small plates, are the most civilized way to eat that I have ever experienced; and Jaleo is a gem among tapas restaurants. There is always something new to try, and the regular dishes are all fabulous. If there is a category of food you don't like or choose to avoid, no worries! Everyone from vegan to carnivore can enjoy the palate pleasing flavors and the fun and fanciful presentations. It's not inexpensive, but it is worth every penny spent."

  • "Jaleo at Bethesda was a welcoming place to have a Sunday brunch. The staff were exceptional in terms of table-side service and welcoming us to the restaurant. The food was excellent as well, a twist on some classic Spanish dishes. I would highly recommend Jaleo at Bethesda to anyone looking for a casual and somewhat different dining experience."

  • "Food is very good overall. Desserts were off the chart fantastic. The fried and cooked dishes we tried were heavy. I would suggest sticking to the fresher choices. Music and noise level was uncomfortable. I was there with my wife for my birthday. The couples to our left and to our right appeared to be on first dates - and were having a hard time being heard. For some reason, they feel obligated to have soccer going on a big screen TV - makes it feel more like a sports bar than a high end restaurant. I certainly would not take a date there after having seen the place."

  • "Very good service, excellent variety. It will always be one of my favorites!"

  • "The tasting menus give you a chance to dine and talk during a date. The tasting menu also gives you an idea about what your date likes and dislikes. It does get loud, so I hope both you and your date do not have any hearing problems."

  • "Great food. Make sure to try to the tres jamones so you can taste the legendary black-footed Iberian pig, one acorn-fed, and one regular fed, side by side. Very interesting. All of our tapas were good. Place was a little loud and the two-person tables were packed in there so you're basically 2 ft away from couples on either side of you. With the noise and being so packed in, it's hard to call this good for a romantic evening, but still a fun night. Probably more well-suited for bigger groups or double dates, that type of thing."

  • "We went for lunch and the service was attentive but not intrusive, really nice servers with a great attitude. Jaleo is for sharing plates and people who really enjoy delicious food. Everything else was fantastic. You can count on having a great meal here, especially if want a lot of choices without meat. Really enjoyed it and will definitely go again for lunch."

  • "I received a last minute call to join out of town friends for a late night dinner. I have been to Jaleo many times and to me it is a neighborhood favorite. For my friends who enjoy tapas, it was new and exciting and we had a wonderful meal. Jaleo may have been around forever, but their food is always good. The restaurant is pretty, yet comfortable; the staff is easygoing and they make you forget the nightmare of parking in Bethesda on a beautiful night."

  • "I've been to the Jaleo in Washington DC, and was excited to compare it with the one in Bethesda. They are very similar in terms of ambiance and decor. The food is outstanding and pretty reasonably priced if you get a few plates to share. I highly recommend this as a treat!"

  • "The food was good but kind of pricey. Overall it was a nice place to eat and I would recommend it to my friends."

  • "We have enjoyed Jaleo for years, but it was difficult to ignore a growing blandness to the food, aging of the decor, and exhaustion of the staff. On our most recent visit, however, we we astonished by the improvements. The decor has been significantly refreshed, the service was more energized, and tthe food - mostly the same as we usually get - was amazingly fresher and tastier. Kudos to Jaleo for teh turn around. Jose should be proud."

  • "Five of us sharing small plates and good, reasonably priced bottles of wine. The server's recommendations were really good. Scallops and pork roll stand out in my memory. We finished with some cheese. Conversation was easy - the restaurant was neither too quiet nor too noisy. A very pleasant weeknight experience."

  • "Making a reservation through Open Table was easy. We added a note that it was our wedding anniversary. The Hostesses did not seem to be aware of the message, but we were seated right away on time. Our table was a "thoroughfare" table, that now that we know, we would have opted to wait a little longer for another table. Our server was knowledgable about the Spanish Tapas, and gave us good advice. He forgot the most important tip. If you order all of your Tapas at once, they all come at once. We were looking for a night for a little slower pace. Maybe a few glasses of wine. The server cleared my signature margarita too quickly without asking. The theme seemed to be, "get them in, get them out". Great food, order two at a time. Adios"

  • "We really like Jaleo--the food is generally of excellent quality and the service is friendly. This time, although we were a large party of 8, the more expensive meat dishes (lamb and steak) were not quite up to the usual succulent standards--and were difficult to cut and eat. But the service remained excellent."

  • "I've been coming here for years with the same friends. We order the same dishes. Service has gone from professional to friendly but inexpert. Food came at odd times with papayas braves 20 mins after everything else. Wine choices are expensive. It's very loud. Plates were removed while food was going from plate to mouth on the fork. Increasingly disappointed over the years. It's turned into an impersonal chain. Not going back."

  • "Well seasoned small plates in hip downtown Bethesda. Good for meeting friends for drinks or small groups."

  • "Great small plates, prepared perfectly. Appropriate for foodies who like to try several items on the menu. Jaleo is now going to be a regular spot for us."

  • "My wife and I decided to take my two sisters-in-law out for a good Friday night out. Jaleo had great options for everyone, pleasing people of different dietary requirements or pickyness. The bar options were great, despite the lack of a variety in beers, but that's not what Jaleo (or any other Jose restaurants) should be known for. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone."
    Dined on 3/7/2014
  • "The Tapas were top shelf. Obvious careful attention to cooking details. Service was very good and helpful. I love Tinto Mencia wine and the server pointed it to me - a hit for the evening since my daughter once gave me a bottle of this wine for my birthday! Over all - great experience!"

  • "Jaleo is always a perfect choice for out of town friends. Everyone can find so much to enjoy on the diverse menu, and the frequent additions keep it interesting for those of us who have the opportunity to visit more often."

  • "Jaleo remains my favorite restaurant. I love variety in my food, and at Jaleo I've found fresh sardines, razor clams, rabbit, sea urchin. My (current) husband and I were on our first date at Jaleo and bonded over the velvety sweetbreads. But it's not just for the adventurous palate. They cover the bases with more familiar meats, fish, and vegetables, each remarkably well prepared. One dish we always order is the addictive potatoes "Patatas Bravas." Likewise Jose's gin & tonic -- the best I've ever tasted. I can't speak to the late night aspects of the Bethesda location. I'm always home in bed by ten."

  • "Visited the Penn Quarter location numerous times and just visited the Bethesda location - it's fantastic and has better service. Loved every minute of it. Great food, wine, and a fabulous evening."

  • "As always - enjoyed ourselves. It's a bit pricey but for a group, it's a great place to have fun and enjoy new flavors. It would have been nice had they brought us our bread and olive oil. Even after requesting it, they still forgot. Other than that, the service was good."

  • "My girlfriend and I go to Jaleo about once a month. The food is amazing; they make brussel sprouts taste good. ;) If you go, the sangria is top notch, and you have to try the bacon wrapped dates- my all time favorite. But everything is good, my girlfriend loves the spinach dish, the scallops and the salmon. For me, I even like the spinach with raisins and apples, but its really the sautéed shrimp that I like. I highly recommend Jaleo!"

  • "I can rely on this place as a gathering spot for a few friends at lunchtime. Especially if you arrive early (it opens at noon) the ambience is very pleasant and not too noisy, which can be an issue later on. The service is very good, starting with a warm welcome at the door; the parking arrangement is generous, allowing two hours free and then twelve hours for only $3.00. Food is well prepared, enhanced by service that appropriately paces its arrival at the table. There are always pleasant surprises. On the most recent visit, the surprise was a lovely serving of vegetable tempura, in a very light batter and absolutely greaseless, a familiar dish done to perfection. Aside from the price, I couldn't ask for better."

  • "We just sat there and ordered small plate after small plate relishing and remembering all the great food, wine, and places we visited in Spain. I do not have the opportunity to eat Spanish food where I live so it was a treat not to be missed to eat at Jaleo. You can get a steak or hamburger anywhere, anytime.Judging from the crowd we were not the only ones to enjoy the food. Reservations on the weekend needed. It was a fun, romantic evening."

  • "The best part of our dinner was the company. I will start this off by saying that a lot can be forgiven if the food or drinks are good. The restaurant was very busy and it was difficult to get to our table. The waitress saw us to bring us the menus but disappeared for nearly 15 minutes. Other waiters avoided eye contact and busers weren't helpful. the waitress was short with us and we did not see her again until the check was brought (denying us the chance to order more tapas). The patatas bravas were pretty good, the paella was meh, the moorish garbanzos were cold, and the steak was very undercooked(chewy). Bad service can be forgiven when the food is good, but when it's just 'okay' it makes you feel like all the hype is misplaced."

  • "Good selection of tasty tapas dishes--something for everyone. It is noisy and crowded--not the place for quiet dinner, especially on saturday night. Only disappointing dish was jambon serrano-tough. Good service but place doesn't lend itself to more than that."
