Our son's graduation dinner was a special occasion that we wanted to be memorable for out of town family. Our expectations were exceeded - food and service were the best. Attentive server who took good care of the grandmas who needed extra attention. Of course we had a table due to our reservation, however, I cannot believe the Fire Marshal actually allows that many people in the place. The food and service were great but the body count, sardine factor, and the room temperature in our little back room were extremely high! This is not the place (on a weekend) for a special occasion if you wish to talk to your companions. We were at a center table of 4, surrounded by large parties and we could not hear the person sitting across from each other at our own table. All four of us fit, healthy individuals and we all found the room temperature very uncomfortable. We immediately thought of Jakes. We also dined on Mussels, sole and catfish - everything was absolutely the best. It made a lasting impression, and they were given a souvenier bib to take home, which is now proudly displayed on their wall. Much appreciated. The food and service has always been excellent and I believe it shows the best of what Portland has to offer. It is not cheap, however. I am on a fixed income so I don't get to go as often as I'd like, but it is always worth every penny when I do go. Favorites are: dishes--Dungeness Crab Leg Saute & live whole Maine Lobster; newest favorite--Sea Scallop, Artichoke & Bacon Saute; appetizers--Baked Escargot, Chilled Seafood Platter, Crab Cakes, Bacon Wrapped Crab/Shrimp Stuffed Prawns, & former(?) Steamer Clams. Jake's only time I eat desserts--The Chocolate Bag, Oregon 3 Berry Cobbler warm + vanilla ice cream, & Walnut Apple Carmel Pie! Although prices have increased (what hasn't?) the value is still fantastic. The dungeness crab was absolutely 100% perfectly cooked. The fried crawfish was very well done but there is a lot of breading on them. The only slight miss was the pacific razor clams, they were also fried and a bit soggy, so maybe the fryer was not up to temp.
I liked that you could get an extra large glass of wine (8 oz) instead of the normal, teetotaler pours you usually get when you order by the glass.

Two of our party had the salmon, which was elegant. One had the crab and shrimp cakes, another excellent choice, and the other had the catfish, which was the best ever.The service was excellent and the food was beyond excellent. I would certainly recommend Jake's for an excellent epicurean adventure. I had a horseradish crusted steelhead while my wife had the crab cakes and they were awesome. I also had oysters in the half shell to start and they were money! The decor is very old and tired, but I believe that is the point there. The service was good and the value was there.
