Jake's remains a nice place for dinner, special occasions. I hate places which are so noisy that you can't hear yourself think, and at Jake's you can carry on a conversation with friends without shouting across the table. The food is great.

There were 5 of us for dinner on a Friday night. Yes, the place was hopping. We were seated immediately for our reservation and had excellent service for the whole experience. Some of the group ordered a really nice wine, others had different drafts. The portions were large but we had dessert anyway as the food was sooooo good.

And we know why. The history of the restaurant reveals that these people know what they're doing, and they've been at it for a while. The bar offers dining as well as drinks, and the staff seems comfortable, confident, and adept in providing a good start for an evening of excellent seafood dining (although they offer other meats as well). Our waiter was willing to explain in detail the ingredients of any dish on the menu. He also provided suggestions about wine choices to match our selections. The menu offers fresh daily fish catches and they are superbly prepared. The decor is a bit old-fashioned, but that lends an ambience of well-established successful patterns. If it works that well (and Jake's does), why change it?

For the price, we were all pretty disappointed with our food and the service. The halibut was overly salted and was not anything special. Our server also got my order incorrect because she did not clarify which salmon dish I was referring to (I didn't know there were two or I would have clarified myself). On top of that, she did not comp the incorrect meal or offer anything to fix the problem. Overall, we were disappointed and will not return or reccomend to anyone.

I had made a reservation for my friends and I at Jake's but upon arrival we decided to sit outside, which we were told did not need a reservation; you can simply sit at an available table and waitress will stop by. At 5:30 in the evening the restaurant wasn't packed and fairly quiet on the inside, but the outside was a little noisier. I ordered a caipirinha which was prepared very well. Most restaurants skimp on the cachaca or add too much sugar but the drink was well made. I had the Horseradish Crusted Oregon Salmon which was very good. The horseradish wasn't too overpowering so I could taste how fresh the salmon was. Highly recommend Jake's if you are in the area and looking for some great seafood!

The artichoke dip was fantastic - not too heavy, very flavorful. My wife's entree of scallops was fantastic, but my horseradish salmon was bland, which seems like it would be hard to do: make horseradish bland. Our mixed drinks were good, although they had to sweeten my a bit before it was right. The sides were the worst part of the night: green beans, potatoes, and rice, all of which were borderline school cafeteria-quality. The lava cake at the end was very good, and the service was very good, too. I'm not sorry I went, but I won't be back anytime soon, either.

Once again Jake's has excelled in all areas. We appreciate their attention to our requests for a table away from groups. When you split a salad they bring it to the table plated for two versus some places that plunk the salad down in the middle and expect you to divide. A nice touch. The chef's recommendations are always great. We had surf clams and the crab/shrimp cakes. Both prepared and presented well. Service was perfect. Attentive but not hovering.

I have eaten at Jakes more than any other restaurant in Portland over the last 10 years. After moving to Denver 3 years ago we were so excited to go to our seafood spot! Coincidentally we found out that 3 years ago Jakes was sold to the Landrys food chain. Unfortunately the appetizer portions were half (6 pof for over 12 dollars, very very small bowl of steamers for over 15). The prices had never changed over the years we've eaten there, but now expect to pay 15-100% more for any entree you know.

Traditional old school fish house with a good selection. The option for simpler preparations on most plates was a big plus. Friendly staff, albeit a bit slow at the beginning. Very busy and a bit noisy with rock hard church-pew-like straight-back wooden benches. Still had ots of business, good for them! Definitely needed a reservation! Portions were generous and food was prepared well. Not a fancy 5 star sit down but a reliable choice for well done classics.

Every time we have friends or family visiting from out of town we bring them to Jakes Famous Crawfish. We have never been disappointed by the food, the service, or the atmosphere. The seafood is top drawer and the raw clam selection is always great. Even though it is part of a large chain the restaurant has been able to maintain its own identity and high quality.

My wife and I ate here on our 2nd anniversary. The service was wonderful and the story the bar\restaurant had to tell about its 118 yrs was very interesting. Once we ordered from the huge menu our appetizer, chowder & stew, main course and dessert was at our table in succession perfectly. The only drawback besides the tad too high prices was the plate arrangement of 1970's-80's vegetable cuts and obligatory ice cream scoop of rice on the side. I guess we stepped back in time with the 118 yr old building and the chef just has not caught up with the times on the side dishes even though the main dish was delicious. We would definitely come back and this time know what to expect, 5 star prices for 3.5-4 star dishes.

We went to Jakes with a large family group. booths are awesome! Drinks nice. entrees were good-limited beef choices (2 basic steaks), though is was listed online as steak and seafood. The seafood-stuffed salmon, was delish-- except for the parts that were not cooked. I know fish,I eat salmon often as I live in Alaska. This was not opaque but gummy and dense. It was too late for everyone by the time I discovered it or I would have sent it to be cooked more. Husbands crawfish ratatouille was great. Dessert choice was nice- nothing exceptional except the purse w white chocolate moose and berries. Waiter made sever errors on bill, but he had a good sense of humor about it so we let it go. Disappointed that it wasn't locally owned anymore.

Our server was friendly as well as knowledgable of the menu. However, we were disappointed from the salad clear through to the dessert. We had the wedge salad, macadamia crusted halibut with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies, and Banana Pie and truffle cake for dessert. The banana pie was amazing, the halibut was flavorless and the rest was just okay. I am normally a huge fan of McCormick & Schmicks but this meal disappointed.

Both my husband and I noticed a rather strong scent of amonia as soon as we stepped inside. It was strong enough that I looked around and wondered why it was packed with so many people? Debated leaving but decided to give it a try since other ratings were so high. Food was pretty tasty but we were really puzzled about what might have generated that smell. Mentioned it to the wait staff and manager and got blank looks as to why that might be. The booths were pretty uncomfortable to sit in as they forced you to sit up really straight!
