An institution in Portland, Jakes Famous Crawfish has been serving delicious food and serving drinks since 1892. The decor and ambience is grand. The food is delectable. Whether you are a native Portlandite or visiting our City, Jakes is a Portland and deserves your patronage.

My wife and I ate here on our 2nd anniversary. The service was wonderful and the story the bar\restaurant had to tell about its 118 yrs was very interesting. Once we ordered from the huge menu our appetizer, chowder & stew, main course and dessert was at our table in succession perfectly. The only drawback besides the tad too high prices was the plate arrangement of 1970's-80's vegetable cuts and obligatory ice cream scoop of rice on the side. I guess we stepped back in time with the 118 yr old building and the chef just has not caught up with the times on the side dishes even though the main dish was delicious. We would definitely come back and this time know what to expect, 5 star prices for 3.5-4 star dishes.

We went to Jakes with a large family group. booths are awesome! Drinks nice. entrees were good-limited beef choices (2 basic steaks), though is was listed online as steak and seafood. The seafood-stuffed salmon, was delish-- except for the parts that were not cooked. I know fish,I eat salmon often as I live in Alaska. This was not opaque but gummy and dense. It was too late for everyone by the time I discovered it or I would have sent it to be cooked more. Husbands crawfish ratatouille was great. Dessert choice was nice- nothing exceptional except the purse w white chocolate moose and berries. Waiter made sever errors on bill, but he had a good sense of humor about it so we let it go. Disappointed that it wasn't locally owned anymore.

Our server was friendly as well as knowledgable of the menu. However, we were disappointed from the salad clear through to the dessert. We had the wedge salad, macadamia crusted halibut with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies, and Banana Pie and truffle cake for dessert. The banana pie was amazing, the halibut was flavorless and the rest was just okay. I am normally a huge fan of McCormick & Schmicks but this meal disappointed.

Both my husband and I noticed a rather strong scent of amonia as soon as we stepped inside. It was strong enough that I looked around and wondered why it was packed with so many people? Debated leaving but decided to give it a try since other ratings were so high. Food was pretty tasty but we were really puzzled about what might have generated that smell. Mentioned it to the wait staff and manager and got blank looks as to why that might be. The booths were pretty uncomfortable to sit in as they forced you to sit up really straight!

  • Birthday dinner at Jakes

Made our reservations online for my wife's 50th birthday and I made it known it was a 50th birthday celebration for my wife and asked for "perhaps a nice dessert". Even though we were early, we were seated promptly and brought menus, bread, butter and water. Jakes prints a new (dated) menu every day and after looking at it for a short time, I noticed with surprise that it had printed at the top, just under the date, "Happy 50th Birthday!". Pointed it out to my wife and it really brought a smile to her face. Our server was excellent and was able to answer all of our menu questions, which really helped us decide on our selections. Dinner was superb, service was excellent throughout and a nice dessert thrown in.

I have been going to Jakes for 40 years. But not much the last 20 or so years. We celebrated the birthday of a friend who had never been to Jakes. Sauteed Dungeness Crab Legs to die for. They brought a complimentary dessert for the birthday girl; which many restaurants do. However, the waitress also brought out 2 extra little cups of ice cream "on the house." Unusually nice for a corporate restaurant.

Wonderful food and service as always. But we come to Jake's for a certain atmosphere that we all know so well, and that atmosphere doesn't exist in the densely packed side dining room that they open to handle the overflow traffic. Though of course the prices are the same. We should know that on a Friday evening, that's the way it'll be. Book early.

Beautiful old restaurant with incredible character. Service (Corinne) was timely and efficient; server was very knowledgeable of menu and specials and helpful with her suggestions. Appetizer of PEI mussels were outstanding as was the added bonus of sourdough bread when dipped in the white wine broth .Entrees -- wife's Dungeness crab with artichoke hearts was to die for: my BC sockeye salmon was nothing special. Wine list for whites from Oregon/Wash. was a little limited but found a nice fit with our seafood--Acrobat Pinot Gris. All in alla very good choice for dining in downtown Portland---highly recommend Jake's Crawfish!!

This was our first visit to the Pacific Northwest from Florida and start of 2 weeks in Portland/Seattle/Vancouver. We were very disappointed by this restaurant. Had a below average meal here at high price. Salmon on cedar plank was OK but not to the level we expected. Rockfish was OK but the shrimp/crab sauce was not very good. Presentation was uninspiring. Ordered 2nd round of drinks that server never brought.

Some of the best, most creative seafood I've eaten anywhere. Although the restaurant was packed, we felt like VIPs due to the outstanding service. Dungeness Crab leg cocktail was incredible, seafood fettuccine and halibut stuffed with crab, shrimp and Brie were also amazing. While we were quite full from the starter and main courses, we were reluctantly talked into the banana cream pie, which turned out to be equally deliciously and a great way to cap off one of the best dinners I've ever had.

Made reservations for my parents 44th anniversary. They don't get out to a nice dinner very often as they are approaching their 80's and 90's. So it was VERY disappointing to pass several lovely booths and tables near windows to be placed in the farthest darkest(no windows) room in the restaurant. They joked to me about trying to find our way out..... I mean here are some elderly folks and the hostess walked them the greatest distance possible.... The food was delicious, the server superb-the menu with "44th anniv" was nice touch, but the seating was terrible.

We had a wonderful lunch and mini-reunion. I had the cold Crawfish Platter and Don had a Seafood Salad. Both were delicious. The Bloody Mary's were excellent, along with the food, service and atmosphere. WHen I'm back in Portland next time, I shall return.
