Thanks to our server, Greg, the evening was perfect, from the first sip of our martinis until the last bite of hula pie. Two of us ordered the halibut special served with a miso wasabi sauce and this was the best halibut I have ever had, moist, tender, and cooked to perfection. The Steak and Lobster ordered by our birthday guest was also excellent. The noise level was so loud that it was difficult to hear across the table. We had wonderful ocean view seating and the view, even on a gray day, was splendid. The location right on the beach in Del Mark is phenomenal. We tried all seafood and loved every bite - from the scallops to the sea bass to the salmon - they were all prepared well and so delicious - as well as the sides they came with. Dessert was a perfect end to the evening with salted caramel creme brulee . . . so good! We had a reservation, but had to wait a few minutes for the table, which we didn't mind. The food was so fresh and was seasoned perfectly. Our first time since the interior remodel and a few menu changes. I've always though this place was great, now even better. The Chef's Plate appetizer has some new choices and is a much better selection than the old. I had the Seafood Trio, shrimp, scallop, fish, and it was very good, though I must say it was the mango chutney that won my heart. Service was very, very good, You just can't beat the ocean front view and though we lingered for quite some time over wine and coffee, we never felt rushed by staff to clear out table. It has a great selection of excellent menu choices and a superb view of the Pacific Ocean from essentially every table. I have never had a main course at Jake's I didn't enjoy and I am also very fond of trying their "Soup of the Day," which is always delicious.
Service is very good with their main challenge being the inevitable logistics of handling a large crowd of diners, even on very ordinary weekday evenings. Reservations are highly recommended to help reduce wait times. Parking near the coast in Del Mar is always an issue but valet parking is available when nearby public parking slots can't be found.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMJake's - scenic and great foodI go to Jake's whenever I’m in North San Diego County. The scenic location right on the beach is a comfortable backdrop for dinner for business or pleasure and the food is consistently great. The beet salad was fresh and tasty and the scallops were large and cooked and seasoned to perfection. Made reservations and had to take only available for 9:15. I got the impression that the someone must have not shown up for work as the service was a little slow. The first food we saw served was almost 9:45 and ours arrived close to 9:50. Maybe the chef was late? I know it's not trendy but we miss the ceasar salad with chilled romaine. Current offering doesn't leave much choice if you're not a fan of field greens.
We had two fish dishes - bass and salmon - and while they were excellently prepared, neither was memorable. They seemed a bit bland. Perhaps our palates trend more to spicy food - we're Asian food lovers. The combination of ingredients in each dish seemed a little forced. The location was awesome, right on the ocean, and the food and service were great. We asked for a table by the ocean and had to wait only about 10-15 mins for one and it was worth it.
I ordered the surf and turf and it was cooked perfectly. My mom ordered the special, “sword fish” and she did have to send it back, she wanted it a bit more well done. The rest of my family loved their meals (portion sizes were just right), and our server Avi was extremely accommodating and helpful.

TS has done it right for years and this is a prime example. we go out of our way from Arizona to experience Jakes and have never been disappointed. On at least 2 occasions the manager has come over and spend a few minutes speaking with us, not just "is everything OK?", but truly interested if the experience was up to par.

I had the seared scallops with coconut creme risotto and it was amazing. The Chef's special was the Halibut and my husband loved it. Dessert menu was very appealing creme brûlée & hazelnut torte was delicious! Valet parking is a must $5.
