I've been to Jake's and Cooper's two times now. Both times as a date night with the boyfriend. He's been there a few more times to grab lunch with his mom. The food is delicious. Their wine menu is great, and they also have a pretty good beer list. Staff if friendly, most resently we had Mai as our server who was so friendly and knowledgeable about the menu.

I have a standing date with my best friend for "treat yourself" dinners and this was one of the best. We brought wine, split a handful of dishes, and were able to relax and have a long leisurely dinner with excellent service and delicious everything. Our waitor was very friendly and accommodating, especially to our slower pace of ordering and dining, which was a treat to not feel rushed at all. The smoked gouda appetizer was out of this world and the shortrib pizza (a must-have in my past experiences at J&C's) did not disappoint. Noise level was perfectly fine as tables are far enough apart for any other conversations to become simply ambient noise. A fabulous dinner as always and a great friend date night for the books.

I don't eat here frequently enough. That said, it's always terrific when I do. I had small plates and each one was perfect, and I like the fact that Jake's offers the diner those options. My dining partner had the ribeye done Pittsburgh style and it was done just right. My experience with Jake's is that is had been consistently flawless over the many years I have been dining here. I look forward to my return.

A disaster. Horrible service if you want to call it that. Food was marginal and took forever to come out of the kitchen. 4 omelettes took over 45 minutes and were very fair. The only positive was that the place was empty and quiet so catching ip with friends was terrific.

My husband and friend loved the pork chop. A good sized portion and cooked well. My friend and I had the seafood salad. It looked beautiful, tasted good but I thought the portion was small for the price. We also shared a pizza which was dry, had little sauce and a little burnt. We sent it back for more sauce and it was returned, more burnt and not good.

  • Good food in Manayunk?
    LarInPhilly
    Dined on 10/11/2014
I know it sounds unlikely that there would be good food amid the bar food in Manayunk but Jake and Cooper's Wine Bar is that. I now consider it the place to eat when in Manayunk (ok with the parking problems there, I don't consider Manayunk the place to be). We were there to see a movie at the UA so where to eat? The Wine Bar is fairly open seating. Ambience nothing special (unless you consider it is in Manayunk) but lighting is nice, colors are good. The manager made a point of coming by to see how our food was. The server was attentive without being overly so. The wines we had were good. We enjoyed our food.

Had heard about, but never been to Jakes. We were celebrating my sister's birthday and decided to graze on variety of small plates. Service was great as they brought out the plates based on when we wanted them, not when the kitchen felt like preparing them. Crab cake, shrimp dumplings, tuna tartare, all excellent. We sat in the window, which was open. A real treat for so late in the season. Lovely evening.

As regular Sunday brunchers at Jake's, we recently decided to book on-line for an Anniversary dinner. I mentioned our purpose in the comment block and requested a booth if possible. Upon ARR the place was packed, but we were immediately & warmly greeted with "Happy Anniversary -- your table is ready." A de rigueur reception decades ago, but regrettably not these days. Our server was similarly enthusiastic and perfectly on task through out our spectacular, perfectly portioned three course dinner. My wife's desert plate was even hand scripted with Happy Anniversary in dark chocolate! Upon noticing the latter, Bruce Cooper arrived at our table with two flutes of complimentary Champaign... A special & delightful evening !!!!!

I can't speak too much on the Chicken Liver Mousse as I had a cold and could not taste much that night but the Red Sangria was good. My friend, who is a vegetarian, had a hard time picking a meal as most dishes are meat based or contain small amounts of meat. She ended up getting the Mac and Cheese, which looked delicious, but it would be nice to find a place that offers more in the vegetarian department.

This was our third visit to Jake's in the past few months. The food has been reliably good - the roasted corn soup was light and flavorful this week -and the service is solid (not too imposing, but there when needed). Jake's is a cut above the usual Manayunk fare, and we're lucky to have such a fine restaurant in the neighborhood.

I was here for brunch on a Sunday about 3 months ago and it was a good experience. This time, because of a scheduling conflict, I had to meet my friend on a Saturday. She insisted that we come here since she loved it last time. This time we ordered lunch. After being treated rudely for asking where I could park my bike, the waitress for our table spilled iced tea on my friend's phone, the hostess (I think) was grumbling about splitting an order of soup into separate bowls for us, and I never received the coffee I ordered at the end of the meal. Granted, my friend is a pretty picky customer, but I had to agree that the service could have been MUCH better.

I've eaten here twice in the past few months, both visits were solid. Our group started with the stuffed quail and meatballs. The quail could have used a bit more gastrique, the meatballs were good. I tried both the grilled pork chops and the calves liver, both were pretty good. The pork came with a strawberry bbq sauce that was really good. The liver seems like it's a staple, having been in the menu for as long as I can remember, and it's deserving. The desserts were shared by all and pretty good, I don't remember the name but the orange/strawberry dessert was good, and light.

But that night was especially "on" and memorable. Steak was to die for, cocktail perfect, cheese/jam dessert and cognac superb, and the waiter was kind enough to write down for me the names of the singers in the background music. Music perfect volume, just loud enough to enjoy if you wanted to hear it, selections perfectly chosen. I realize I'm not reviewing a concert but a restaurant, but "What a Difference a Day Makes" happened to be a great cut.

The food is great -- lively menu, nice ambiance. They advertise as a BYOB -- which they are, and you can bring your own (wine only, spirits not acceptable). However, they charge a $15/BOTTLE corking fee -- which felt like a rip-off. They do have a bar (have no idea what they serve, we expected a BYOB so we brought our own) -- and were charged $30 for the 2 bottles that they opened. The food is very good, the service was lovely -- can highly recommend the octopus salad, the burger (yeah, really) and Parmesan fries. Dinner was expensive (the food was worth the price, the corking fee of $30 felt like an overcharge).

We have been coming here 2-3 times per year for afternoon dates. While the cheese plate is always great, the small plates and mains are hit or miss. Seasoning and components to dishes (i.e. number of mushrooms) needs to be consistent. That said, we still enjoyed our meal. The last few times we came here, there was a lot of fruit flies and large black flies.

This is a great Manayunk restaurant. Four of us for dinner - four different appetizers and entrees and four great meals. I had the chicken which was prepared sous vide - crispy skin and moist and succulent on the inside. My wife opted for the crab cakes and you had to look hard to find any breading. And our friends had the scallops and hangar steak - great choices also. They started with beet and cheese salad, and summer gazpacho soup, and I had oysters - succulent and fresh, and my wife the shrimp. Just a little room for desert so I opted for sharing some cheese with our friends, and the other choice was a selection of terrific local ice cream. And our server couldn't have been nicer, and attentive. Visit Main Street and dine here --

Been to this restaurant often, and have enjoyed it. However, this Friday night, early seating with the place almost empty, the service was much left to be desired for. Not only did the waitress not bring us the condiments we requested, but she failed to follow up on anything. The pizza I ordered was cold and I could not get her attention to reheat it. The dinner out with our daughter left us very disappointed.

The food is always good at Jake's. it's not great, but very good. I just don't understand the short pours. When you go out for a nice meal and you are going to spend more than a few dollars, why pour a drink that fills 2/3 of the glass. Pouring a full drink is such an inexpensive thing to do and not pouring a good size drink generates this kind of review. At $12-15 for a drink, fill my glass.
