A word from Jai by Wolfgang Puck
JAI cuisine fuses rich Asian tradition and flavor with contemporary culinary trends. Dishes such as "Duck Trio", "Miso Marinated Salmon", and " Shanghai Lobster" coupled with the modern ambiance of the dining space are sure to please the palate.

JAI by Wolfgang Puck (pronounced "Jay") draws on the Thai word for "heart" and also refers to a Chinese good luck dish. We are located next to La Jolla Playhouse's Mandell Weiss Forum.

The restaurant was designed by esteemed architect Martin Vahtra, founder of PROJECTS architectural and interior design firm in New York.

JAI is available for private events on non-performance days/evenings, and offers drop-off and full-service catering.

Went here since it was close to where we were going to a show. Found out within 5 minutes of our arrival that this was the restaurants last night. Wolfgang must have lost the lease. Made you feel immediately like you were at a funeral. Food was not up to Puck standards, but guess I could understand.

When attending the La Jolla Playhouse, Jai is perfect for a meal or appetizers and drinks before the show. You do need a minimum 1.5 hours for a relaxing meal and time to talk. If arriving without a reservation, sit at the bar to eat and enjoy the company of other theater goers. Provides a good selection of appetizers and main courses, both in servings that can be easily shared for lighter eaters. The heirloom tomato salad is a favorite even though the preparation is slightly different each visit.

  • Closing Without A Word???

By chance, I found out that Jai was closing this Sunday. I dined there last Tuesday and the one before as a prelude to seeing plays at the La Jolla Playhouse. Not a word to the clientele nor to neighborhood, just a sudden closing. I am very disappointed. My server was outstanding. However, the duck was overdone. And now I know why there were so few menu choices, both for the main meal and the desserts (only two desserts offered).

Have had some memorable meals here in the past -- but lately they are getting less and less interesting. Food was ok - not stellar and it's very expensive. Also, the service has gotten terrible. It took more than an hour to get grilled salmon and a chinese chicken salad...

Jai's menu has less variety than in the past, but the offerings were well done and well presented. I loved the corn soup. I wish there had been a fish choice in addition to the crab.

Apparently, Wolfgang Puck's contract expires in the next few weeks; this impacted food selection. Once we were able to choose items we wanted, the quality of service and food remained high. But: Limited options.

It's hard to rate a restaurant that is closing in 2 weeks. The restaurant was short on staff (one server did not show) and the poor waiter tried his best to serve what looked like 10 different tables. We enjoyed our dinner and this would be a great neighborhood place if it was not closing.

I was very disappointed with Jai. This is my second time there. The first time the food was ok, this time it was passable at best. I had a tofu moussaka dish that was possible one of the worst vegetarian dishes I have had (for $18). The restuarant is so convenient to the La Jolla playhouse, with good ambience and service. Too bad the food is so mediocre and not consistent with the Wolfgang Puck brand.

The food and service were good, not great. I ordered portobello fries and it was more zucchini fries than portobello. A bit of a rip off. It was very noisy...so much so that it was very difficult to carry on a conversation at our table. It was wonderful when everyone finally left for the theater.

There is construction going on all around the restaurant right now, so the view is not very good. We finished dinner and ordered dessert because we had plenty of time before the play we were seeing. After almost a half hour our server apologized and said there was a problem in the kitchen but our dessert would be right out. We told her to just bring the check, as we no longer had time to enjoy dessert without hurrying. Jai is the most convenient place to eat before a show at the playhouse, but it may be a while before we try it again.

We had dinner before the theater on Friday and it was superb. We started with the potstickers, sharing an order. It was delicious and just the right amount for the two of us. Then we both had the salmon main dish. The salmon was on top of a crunchy rice cake and surrounded by enoki mushrooms. Unbelievably wonderful! The rice cake was something we hadn't had before and we loved the crunch and the counterpoint to the salmon. We accompanied it with a Grgich Hills Sauvignon Blanc, which was perfect. Service was excellent.

We dined here last night before our scheduled performance at 7:30 at La Jolla Playhouse. Our reservation was for 6:30, but the service was good enough to have us finished with the check paid by 7:20. Had the asian chicken salad which was a very ample portion to be split with my husband. Also, I had the miso salmon and he had the shortribs. Both meals were ample portiond and quite tasty. Would order them again.

We went prior to the "His Girl Friday" show next door. I was surprised that the restaurant was woefully under-staffed resulting in the worse service at Jai that I have ever encountered . The poor level of service took the edge off the fine-to-excellent food quality; I hope this was a one-time experience or we'll have to find another restaurant before a La Jolla Playhouse event.

When I made the reservation I told them it was for a very special birthday. When it came time for desserts, the waitress just brought over the menu. Nothing was mentioned about the birthday. The food was tasty but very expensive and not worth the name of Wolfgang Puck. Very boring menu for such a celebrity.

Since the restaurant is part of the La Jolla Playhouse complex, the servers are unusually aware of timing and the need to move us through to performance time. This allowed for a happily stress-free dining experience. The food was perfect, the sauces subtle and memorable, and the university student who served us was a gem. Although we are locals, this was the first night of our vacation, and what a lovely evening it was!

They had staffing problems that night that service was slow but they apologized and 'comped' a dessert and then our drinks when the dessert was delivered to another table. But the chopped salad, salmon and steak the four of us was excellent. A little noisy for me.... ask for a table in the back. A very nice spot for a stop before (if ther slow service isn't a pattern) or after the theatre at LJPH!

Food was excellent. Service was almost comically bad. Worst waiter we've experienced in...ever. Nobody on the entire staff seemed like they wanted to be there, not sure why, but very strange given the fact that the food was truly excellent. Every time our waiter failed to bring something we'd asked for or ordered (which was pretty much every one of the few times we saw him), he'd blame the bus boy or the kitchen staff or someone other than himself, then disappear again for so long we figured he had just quit and walked out. And then, when we'd about given up, food would arrive...at the table next to ours--people seated at least 20 minutes after we were. We were going to a show at La Jolla Playhouse so we were a captive audience.

Though it had a very limited menu, about 4 choices per course, it was very good. If you have a picky palette, this is not the place for youIt is located in a place that could not be seen, so we wondered around & had to ask strangers if they knew where it was located. We were one of 3 tables on a Thursday night at 6:30, odd? The service & food was good, but I couldn't understand the lack of customersor the atmosphere. I think there was a catch to this place but I couldn't figure it put, being in the theater district you would think it would be busier. It was very odd, almost uncomfortable, like we were the only ones who didn't get the memo. Though once again, good food & service.

I don't think we would go to this restaurant if it weren't for its convenient location right across from La Jolla Playhouse. Although we have had some good meals, last time we were there they had taken a few of our favorites off the menu. It closes early and it is nice enough but it doesn't have a great warm ambiance. It's probably better in the Summer since it has a very open bright space.
