Diner Reviews
  • "The tuna Niçoise salad is wonderful and the outdoor seating on a relatively quiet side street is a treat."

  • "I took a friend here for a birthday lunch, and was pleased with the choice--just a few blocks from the Metropolitan Museum, which was our next stop. It was quiet, other diners weren't sitting on top of us, as so often happens in Manhattan restaurants, and the luncheon menu had plenty of good choices, as did the wines-by-the-glass list. We enjoyed the food and the attentive service."

  • "A tip for the restaurant - an old baguette will be stale and hard even if heated in the oven for a little. Never serve old bread. Tips for the customers: 1. don't order the Pain Perdu, it was bad. 2. don't order the croque madame - it's terrible. 3. don't order the croque monsieur - it's appalling. 4. don't go there at all, it's a waste of time and money. The waiter was very kind!"

  • "I had their Thursday night special and it was special indeed. I will definite be going back. Many of the other entrees looked excellent as well."

  • "Jacques Brasserie is a great option in the neighborhood. I had tickets for a movie nearby and they fully understood and did their best to bring the food on time, which was delicious. I strongly recommend the place for anybody."

  • "If you are a fish and seafood lover this is the place for you. Actually, I did not pay much attention to the rest of the menu which you can see online. I already knew that I was there for their mussels and I followed that with trout. Both were excellent. Also, as I knew I would eat bread to enjoy the delicious sauce from the mussels, they were nice enough to substitute a small green salad for the french fries that came with the mussels."

  • "Popped in with out of town guests for an early lunch Never disappoints! Jacque Burger is amazing!!! I rarely eat more than a few bites of most burgers bit polished this off without a problem. The apple offsets the blue cheese in the most wonderful way The French fries are always the best!"

  • "My friend and I went to Jacques Brasserie for the Loire Valley Week special. We were very disappointed. The only thing that the restaurant offered was terrine with a glass of wine for $20. So, we veered from the special and ordered off the menu. My friend had a Caesar Salade with grilled chicken breast, croutons, some cherry tomatoes, and blue cheese dressing and I had a roasted chicken breast sandwich with tomato, basil, and mayo on baguette. While the food was good, it was not out of the ordinary. The cote du rhone wine was mediocre. Would I go back? Maybe, if I were in the neighborhood, but I would not go out of my way to eat here again. "

  • "In a restaurant that was fairly empty when we arrived, my partner and I waited 40 minutes for the first course to arrive, only to be served the entree instead of the appetizer. Fish was rather dry, chicken was somewhat tasteless. Although 2nd drink was comped, I was unhappy with the care and service, as well as the quality of food."

  • "Can't go wrong with Jacques, especially for Mother's Day. Kitchen closes between late lunch time and dinner, so be sure to come earlier or around dinner for full menu. "

  • "We have been here a few times and have enjoyed it. The onion soup has a little to much Worcestershire sauce and onions don't seem caramelized enough for my taste but I still order it. What can I say, I'm picky about my soup! Food is very good and all the waiters and staff are friendly. We will go back"

  • "The restaurant was packed; the staff, shorthanded due to loss of service of a waiter who'd had an accident, bustled about nonstop. Still, the apple martinis, sancerre, salmon tartare, salade caprese, bouilliabaise, Thai mussels, steak, and café liegeois, were as delicious as always, the overall dining experience as tasty, festive and congenial as anticipated. Jacques is a winner, dispatches challenges with professional aplomb. Our party of four--two in from out-of-town especially for the occasion--had a great time. We look forward to a return engagement soon."

  • "Reminded me of many Parisian bistros, the food was very good and the mussels were excellent. We would definitely go there again. "

  • "They don't give you change from your bill, if you have the unfortunate luck of paying in cash. For example, if your change, after you have paid the check, comes to $16.40, you will only get $16 back. When I asked them where my change was, they say they round off the bill and keep the change. Ridiculous! What if all establishments started doing that? It's unethical and inappropriate. Stay far away!"

  • "Don't bother to book thru opentable unless you hold onto receipt or print out a copy of your credit card statement, because rest assured you will have to write to get points, no matter how clear you are about checking in, and them 'confirming' that they checked you in. "

  • "Top of my list! The food is always delicious with a wonderful presentation. The staff are courteous and on their game. It was my third time there and every experience is better than the next!"

  • "This restaurant is never consistent, but when good, it can be very good. This was our last visit. From our table (right under speakers after requesting quiet spot) to the incredibly inept service;the meal, microwaved and returned 20 minutes too late having been presented with the appetizer and kept aside, awful. The chicken, simple French fare, might have been a redeeming feature, but it was like no roast chicken I've ever had! Swimming in, what! cumin?! When the maitre'd came over I very nicely said that as a regular customer, the place was a bit off tonight. Our comment was met with a sincere "sorry", but nothing else was said or done. The atmosphere is very authentic, but everything else was horrible. Stay away."

  • "My husband and I have been going to Jacques over years and always enjoy their delicious food and friendly service. This is standard French fare at affordable prices. If you want to have an enjoyable dining experience, whether it is intimate or with a group, look no further than Jacques."

  • "but, unfortunately, our "usual waiter was not in residence at our usual table and he was wonderful and our waiter was OK but not the same solicitous attention but still always a fun festive atmosphere"

  • "I have eaten here for business lunches as well as dinner with friends and family. Lunches have been excellent, quiet environment, great atmosphere for communication. Nights on weekends can be noisy but I have always been able to converse, food is always good."

  • "Everyone enjoyed their meal (steak frites, French onion soup, terrific salads). However, I ordered a hamburger which was the worst burger ever. It crumbled when bitten into."

Food was displayed and presented well ,service was very good, and the food was delicious. Would highly recommend jaques to anyone lookin f2f for the french effect."

  • "Cozy, authentic and welcoming French brasserie - well located near the East side subway at 86th St. Service outstanding; classic French fare prepared with care. Bar suitable for locals dropping by, small tables plus bar stools, and separate restaurant space very comfortable and just formal enough to make it feel like one is 'going out' to eat."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner with two great salads, two martinis and two bloody Mary's. One of the salads was a bit pricey for $14. The other salad was $11. The total with tip was $150 which is not so little so we could not frequent the restaurant regularly but will definitely be back and it is just a block from where we live."

  • "This was my first time eating at this Restaurant. The crowd was a mix of older neighborhood people and younger couples and groups. The food was first rate. Most of the people at our table orders mussels and scallops (which I tried and thought were excellent). I had a steak and was impressed at the exact right cook (perfect outside, warm pink all through the inside). Service was slightly slow, especially when it came time to collect our check. Otherwise excellent."

  • "They sat us in a corner booth, a very romantic spot. The restaurant was full of people chatting, however it was not too loud that we couldn't hear ourselves, and not too quiet that we had to whisper. The service was very attentive, even though he probably had a fake french accent. The oysters were delicious we started with, as was the white wine we had by the glass. I had the pheasant, the special, and it was incredible, topped with cranberry sauce. My date had the duck, and I did not find it as delicious as when we normally order duck, but it was still pretty good. The duck came out rare instead of medium rare, but that is better than being too cooked. Overall a very romantic dinner, and my favorite part was the mood set by the restaurant."

  • "We've dined here several times since moving to the neighborhood, often as walk-in, sometimes with advance reservations. Atmosphere is warm and friendly. Food is excellent: typical french fare with special mussels dishes. Nightly specials are excellent. Couscous Royale (with lamb shank & chicken and extra sauce on the side) was especially good. Wines by the glass are good quality. Definitely recommend for pleasant, relaxed dining with friends, as a twosome or even solo."

  • "Jacques Brasserie is like an old friend you're happy to meet and wonder why it's been so long between visits. The food is always tasty and fresh--menu favorites are traditional French onion soup, steak tartare, moules frites poulette with chives and cream, bouillabaisse on Thursdays, ending with a dessert of Café Liegeois, a vanilla and coffee ice cream coupe topped with whipped cream, espresso and chocolate sauce. The room, warm and inviting, could be in a bistro on the Left Bank; service is friendly and professional. A bientot, I promise!"
