Jacques Brasserie is a relaxing sanctuary deep in the heart of the Upper East Side. Low key and inviting, this two-room restaurant and bar serves classic French dishes amongst dark wooden walls adorned with vintage poster advertisements and bohemian scenes a la Toulouse-Lautrec.

Open seven days a week, Jacques Brasserie serves lunch, dinner and weekend brunch.

Our chef creates everything in house, producing classic dishes such as French Onion Soup, Escargot, Steak Frites, Poulet Roti, Salade Nicoise and our most popular dish, Moules Frites.

  • "This restaurant is never consistent, but when good, it can be very good. This was our last visit. From our table (right under speakers after requesting quiet spot) to the incredibly inept service;the meal, microwaved and returned 20 minutes too late having been presented with the appetizer and kept aside, awful. The chicken, simple French fare, might have been a redeeming feature, but it was like no roast chicken I've ever had! Swimming in, what! cumin?! When the maitre'd came over I very nicely said that as a regular customer, the place was a bit off tonight. Our comment was met with a sincere "sorry", but nothing else was said or done. The atmosphere is very authentic, but everything else was horrible. Stay away."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner with two great salads, two martinis and two bloody Mary's. One of the salads was a bit pricey for $14. The other salad was $11. The total with tip was $150 which is not so little so we could not frequent the restaurant regularly but will definitely be back and it is just a block from where we live."

  • "Jacques Brasserie is like an old friend you're happy to meet and wonder why it's been so long between visits. The food is always tasty and fresh--menu favorites are traditional French onion soup, steak tartare, moules frites poulette with chives and cream, bouillabaisse on Thursdays, ending with a dessert of Café Liegeois, a vanilla and coffee ice cream coupe topped with whipped cream, espresso and chocolate sauce. The room, warm and inviting, could be in a bistro on the Left Bank; service is friendly and professional. A bientot, I promise!"

  • "This was my first time eating at this Restaurant. The crowd was a mix of older neighborhood people and younger couples and groups. The food was first rate. Most of the people at our table orders mussels and scallops (which I tried and thought were excellent). I had a steak and was impressed at the exact right cook (perfect outside, warm pink all through the inside). Service was slightly slow, especially when it came time to collect our check. Otherwise excellent."

The restaurant was full of people chatting, however it was not too loud that we couldn't hear ourselves, and not too quiet that we had to whisper. The service was very attentive, even though he probably had a fake french accent. The oysters were delicious we started with, as was the white wine we had by the glass. I had the pheasant, the special, and it was incredible, topped with cranberry sauce. My date had the duck, and I did not find it as delicious as when we normally order duck, but it was still pretty good. The duck came out rare instead of medium rare, but that is better than being too cooked. Overall a very romantic dinner, and my favorite part was the mood set by the restaurant."

Food is excellent: typical french fare with special mussels dishes. Nightly specials are excellent. Couscous Royale (with lamb shank & chicken and extra sauce on the side) was especially good. Wines by the glass are good quality. Definitely recommend for pleasant, relaxed dining with friends, as a twosome or even solo."

  • "The food was fine, but I am jaded, having eaten at a much finer French bistro in the suburbs for a similar price. My appetizer and main course were fine but not excellent. My wife's tuna nicoise salad was just okay. We were not impressed with the dessert menu and didn't order anything. I was somewhat tempted by the souffle, but the menu said it would take 20 minutes; why didn't the server mention this at the beginning of the meal as most smart restaurants do? I was surprised at how stingy the service was for bread. We each got one piece and weren't offered any more. It seems cheap not to put out a bread basket. This is not how they do it in France! Too bad, because the bread was crusty and good."
