Diner Reviews
  • "Will definitely go back when we are in NYC. Great food and wonderful cocktails."

  • "The new chef is terrible and the restaurant is pinching pennies to serve the cheapest worst ingredients. All the while, the prices have gone up 20%. French toast for example-- used to be made with a brioche type of loaf bread in thick slices. Now they literally use thin, sliced, sandwich bread like Wonder Bread. Eggs Benedict-- Chef doesn't know how to poach an egg. 3 of 6 of us in the group ordered Eggs Benedict and all of our eggs were hard boiled and shriveled. It comes with fries and they literally counted out 10 fries and put them on the plate. It used to be my go-to place for big groups b/c there is no line and the food was decent or rather good. This place now sucks. Don't go here."

  • "a little disappointed by the food, but the service was diligent and very nice. Beautiful dining room also"

  • "The beauty of this restaurant is that it is reminiscent of the many bistros in Paris that are standard but homey and feel very local - something like the London pubs. Located where Prince Street becomes more Little Italy than Soho, the ambience on Saturday night felt like this was the place where friends meet, eat and have fun. It was dark and warm inside. The glimmer of the outdoor heater also added to the feeling. The food was good; mussels and striped bass were ordered, the service was friendly with no over attention. If I lived closer I could imagine frequenting this place."

  • "Reasonable priced French food. Would have preferred a few more choices among the entrées Very good wine list"

  • "Great location, great food. We had no problem getting a table and we sat just at the edge of the restaurant on a beautiful night so the front was open to the outside. It's a quaint place and my only problem was that there was a man sitting at an outside table (5ft from our table) chain smoking the entire time. Within an hour he must have smoked 10-15 cigarettes and the staff kept going up to talk to him to talk as if he was the owner or a repeat customer. Either way, it was extremely rude and I had to eat through and breathe in his smoke the entire meal. It completely ruined my experience. If I ever do go back, I'll be sitting at the back of the restaurant."

  • "We had friends in from out of town and went to Jacques for lunch close to soho. Our lunch took over an hour to receive and we ordered grilled cheese and grilled chicken sandwiches. There were 4 tables of diners when we arrived, we were the last table left when finished. Grilled cheese was burnt on one side to boot, we live in the city and have never had slower service."

  • "The service lives up to the hype. It's not snobby at all, Sonny was the the friendliest server I've ever met. A friend asked how the french fries were done, and before you know it a free side of french fries came out. That's service. The food is exceptional and the menu changes every season. Every dish is executed to perfection, you won't be disappointed. Get the stone bass and the cripsy artichokes, and the famous chocolate souffle out of this world. Great place"

  • "Great little gem in the heart of soho. Took my girlfriend here in Valentine's day and she loved everythjng about it. The decor was very old rustic feel almost like going into an old French cafe. It has a lot of character and that's what my girlfriend loved so much about it. It was my first time here so I can't really recommend what's good. I had the brick oven rotisserie chicken and it was very delicious. My gf had mussels with French fries. Loved their fries!!..should also try their "friends with benefit" cocktail..a must try!!."

  • "The waiter let us longer forever, which was nice but if you're in a hurry this might not he your place! We went for a reasonably priced price-fixed lunch, but my small coffee cup never got refilled--but I never asked either."

  • "I've dined here several times and it never disappoints. Friendly, knowledgable staff. Good vibe."

  • "The food here is nothing special, but the cocktails in the "1534" basement bar are worth a trek."

  • "It is our favorite restaurant all around. Good food, Excellent service, friendly atmosphere for watching the Olympics, enjoyable place to brings friends and it is very entertaining if you love the NYC scene and who doesn't (you can sit half indoor and half outdoors)"

  • "This is your typical French bistro - they do it right and the food is good. The reason I gave three stars is because there are several others in NY who do the same thing. But not to detract from the quality of this place - definitely a good option if you're in SoHo and want yummy French food in a cozy setting."

  • "Loved it... the food and service were both great. It turned out to be a wonderful spot to catch up with an old friend. Want to go there again soon!"

  • "Went here for dinner with two friends. Made reservations and looked place up online but were surprised to find that cash and amex are the only payment options when we arrived (there is a sketchy ATM next door though). Food was good and service was friendly and prompt! Our wine glasses were never empty and all the entrees and appetizers came out quickly and were delicious."

  • "I was looking for a very simple French place to celebrate my wife's birthday and have a casual and laid-back French experience for her to discover (I am French myself). The food was basic but good. That's what people need to realize: French cuisine isn't just about upscale ingredients. Most of the most popular French dishes started out as "poor people's food", and in all honesty, that's where my preference goes. Jacques delivered on that aspect. We ordered a bottle of Riesling, which was good. The wine list is pretty diverse, although not impressive, nice enough to give an overview of what France offers wine-wise. The dessert came with a candle on top. The waiters and the entire room sang Happy Birthday for my wife, which she enjoyed!"

  • "We kept it simple, in keeping with the French peasant cuisine featured here. Both the veal risotto and the cassoulet were first rate: tasty, subtle, and hearty."

  • "My girlfriend wanted to go after she heard about the place in a movie. It was an amazing experience, we were in Paris for a couple hours. The waiter was very kind and friendly all the time, he even gave us some recommendations for NYC. The food is very good although not outstanding, the only exception are the desserts, they were exquisite."

  • "We were a group of seven who were pleased with the restaurant and service. We ended up spending more time than we planned so most of us couldn't the special exhibit at the New Museum. Food was very good."

  • "Good food and service - but I recommend they get rid of the dead flowers - very off putting."

  • "Had one of their house specials: a French classic -- steamed mussles with herbs and white wine. it arrived dry."
    Dined on 7/26/2011
  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The food is always delicious and it's a great place to go with friends or on a date. Definitely try the roasted chicken -- it's the best I've ever had."
    Dined on 7/24/2011
  • "Food and service are fair for a brunch. Unexcited staff, tired atmosphere and mediocre food makes this a brunch of last resort."
    Dined on 6/12/2011
  • "A charming, neighborhood find. Had not been before but will definitelyngo again. Very French/authentic feeling without trying too hard. Nice, relaxed but attentive service, all my favorite bistrot food groups on the menu and a reasonable wine list. Also made me a great Old Fashioned! What's not to love?!"

  • "horrible food unfortunately, although the French fries were good! won't ever go back though"

  • "The prix fix brunch was fabulous, and the bloody mary amazing! Waiters were charming, and the neighborhood so fun to walk around. Will definitely be recommending Jacques to anyone else!"

  • "they always do a good job, service was a little slow but not a big deal at all."

  • "great food and atmosphere. attentive and courteous waitress. the mixed green salad was a little boring, but the frisee w/lardons was excellent - but anything with lardons is great! the steak au poivre was very good, and the mussels were outstanding."

  • "I can't believe I've never been to Jacques! I will become a regular for sure. Authentic, tasty French/Moroccan food, great fish, staff couldn't have been nicer/more welcoming. And a moderate wine list. Neighborhood gem for sure."

  • "The maître d' had an attitude and didn't seem to care about our satisfaction. He also left the front door open for a long period of time so cold air and cigarette smoke came into the restaurant. They played Sade's greatest hits a little too loud on the stereo. The food was pretty good but all in all it was a sub-par experience. Would not recommend. Go spend your money elsewhere -- where the staff will appreciate you."

  • "Most delicious chocolate fondue with profiterole dippers. Moules with frites and other entrees wonderful. My daughter's favorite NYC spot so when had lunch there for her birthday. A little dingy - could use a little face-lift or just a good scrubbing."

  • "We frequent Jacques on the Upper East Side so this was a nice change for us. It was great to be able to get some of our favorites at a much closer location. It's a smaller menu but we still found enough to choose from."

  • "It was a rainy summer evening mid week and a very quiet night overall. I chose the restaurant because I was meeting an old friend and wanted a quiet place. The ambience was perfect and the service attentive. It has the potential to be very romantic. We were cared for an not rushed. It was a very nice dining experience in one of New York's loveliest neighborhoods."

  • "My wife and I had the Tuna tartar and escargot appetizers. Both were superb, although the dish the escargot comes in isn't quite deep enough to have enough left over for dipping bread. Hanger steak for her and steak tartar were outstanding. We noted that there were definitely French nationals eating there, which we took as a good sign. Waiter was attentive. Excellent place, would definitely eat there again."
    Dined on 7/30/2010
  • "Everything about the restaurant fanastic, except the food. I ordered the mussels (traditional style), which were bland and I ended up eating all of the fries it came with because I did not want to finish the mussels. My girlfriend ordered salmon over polenta, which also was not very good. Overall great ambiance and nice waiter, who of course now suffer with below average food."
