A word from Jacob Wirth
We are the 2nd oldest restaurant in Boston and the longest consecutively running tradition in the city. The original round mahogany tables and bar have welcomed one and all both young and old for over 142 years. Share a meal and moment in history where the people who built Boston did. Where Larry Bird came after walking off the court his last night of being a Boston Celtic. Most recently where Hollywood has found inspiration featuring Jacob Wirth in "Knight and Day" and "The Company Man." Where Boston"s Big Dig was drawn on napkin... Hey when you're 130 years old see if you get everything right!
We strive for great service here but sometimes things do not always go as planned. Both good and bad we would like to hear your experience and feedback. These comments can be sent to mfitzgerald@jacobwirth.com Thank you in advance!

Diner Reviews
  • "Looks like a good place to watch a futball (soccer game)."

  • "We went for Germany v. Brazil - excellent setup! Tons of TV screens, a projector screen in the middle, and a lively atmosphere! It was a bit hot, but there were tons of people there. Can't wait to go back this Sunday!"

  • "Not for kids, but a fun historic stop for a cocktail and some burgers. The food is good, nice people working there and gritty old Boston feel."

  • "We love Jacob Wirth's! The food is delicious, beer on tap & root beer refreshing! Fun spot casual old Boston immigrant feel and then there is the history! Jake's Grill, Sauerbraten, spaetzle, potato salad, red cabbage, potato pancakes delicious. Food Allergy friendly for one of the members of our party for years, another reason why it is a favorite spot of ours! This time we stopped by Jake's on the way to the Boston Opera House to see the magnificent show Phantom of the Opera. Looking for a spot to watch World Cup Jacob Wirth's is it! we will be back for Oktoberfest!"

  • "Service was not good. When asked about feed not knowledgeable. Very noisy bar, not really restaurant. Expensive for a bar scene. Appetizers were good and food good."

  • "Loved the food...german chef in family and miss his entrees...this has similar. The jaegar schnitzel was superb. Red cabbage! So many of the beers we saw only in Germany...like a wine list. The beers are like wines so diverse. Oompa band was added bonus...a little older but great guys. Like Germany can be noisy, and has the ambience of the very old restauant, building that is is. A step back in time. Wish we had more of this in Boston. Service great, friendly. 25cent hot dog day sounds interesting."

  • "While Jacobs Wirth is crowded, lively and fun meeting place with great German Food. It can be a nice quiet lunch. Excellent German Food."

  • "Awesome atmosphere for a birthday dinner with a group of 18 people. The staff were very accommodating as some people were added last minute. The live singing and pianist were awesome! We requested some songs and sang along. The food was pretty good too!"

  • "Jacob Wirth's is a fun and enjoyable restaurant. Beer choices are terrific. The food ran from pretty good ( jaegerschnitzle) to very good ( salmon with pretzel crumbs) to great (whoopie pie dessert and sauerkraut/sausage balls appetizer). I would gladly return to explore more of the menu. Large noisy room was fun and fit our mood. Fine for kids. Would skip for romantic dinner."

  • " The food was great, but there was way too much noise for my taste in a restaurant. Our server was very helpful and understanding in terms of helping us get as far away as possible from the distracting noise. The sauerbraten was great as was the corn bread. I'd eat there again at a quieter time."

  • "We were there on a Saturday night. Piano player and a fun crowd singing along. Good German food and beer hall atmosphere. Not for a quiet date. "

  • "Great food, fast service, convenient to everything in the theater district. Not many restaurants remain in business as long as this Jacob Wirth's had, and there is a reason for their longevity."

  • "We decided to go back to Jacob Wirth for lunch before the theatre, having not been there for 20+ years. We were not disappointed. The beer was terrific; we had a charming and attentive server; and the food was excellent. "

  • "JW has been a relatively regular spot for me to hang out since I moved here a few years back. Chose it to celebrate a momentous occasion recently and they didn't let me down. Great food for a Friday lunch, service was good but since they were a little understaffed our waitress was a little in over her head for a large group. Still worthy of a 20% tip though. Their beer selection is EPIC and it's fun enough inside to make you feel like your actually celebrating. "

  • "Our waiter took our order, brought us our food, and that was it. He walked by several times as I had an empty glass and never asked if I wanted a refill. I had to flag him down just to get our check. He was not friendly at all. It was very off putting. The food was good. The menu had lots of options and came out fairly quickly. The atmosphere seemed like it would be a great place to dine. You only get one chance to make a first impression; especially with us being from out of town. Hopefully, you'll get a friendly waiter and enjoy the experience more than we did. "

  • "So I came here on my birthday and was wildly impressed. Amazing beer list, phenomenal food, and a fantastic atmosphere. I can't wait to come back for my next visit, prost!"

  • "For fans of schnitzel, wurst in its many forms and sauerbraten Jacob Wirth hits the spot on the food and beer front. The service is also classically efficient if not spartan German. Finally, while kitschy, the over-emphasis on trying to make this a German Beer-Hall misses the mark a little with the piano player but gets a nod for the effort. Overall Wirth the trip."

  • "We came to Jacob Wirths for a 30th birthday party. Our waitress was great at the beginning, however, she had very little knowledge of the beer menu. As the night went on, we saw less and less of her and we were thirsty! She could have made more money and we could have had a more enjoyable event."
    Dined on 5/20/2014
  • "Fun place and delicious food. The menu is extensive enough that even people not looking for traditional German food will be happy."

  • "Wanted to try restaurant. Server was bad. No need to rush back."

  • "I've always wanted to try German Food as I've heard the Schnitzel is very good. My husband and I had an event we were going to at the Wilbur Theater so we decided to give this place a try after reading some of the reviews. We split a few "apps/small plates so we could try a few things. We went with the Sauerbraten, Jaeger Schnitzel, & Bucket of Soft Pretzels. The Sauerbraten was very good, the Jaeger was ok, but definitely don't waste your time with the Soft Pretzels those were just pretzels that you could buy from the freezer section. Would we go again? Probably not, but definitely glad we gave it a try."

  • "The food was okay, the service was fine, but they need to resand and refinish the table tops - I kept sticking to it. Love to keep the historical ambiance and the German food, but the chairs could be a little more comfortable."
    Dined on 5/15/2014
  • "Really bad service, no attention at all. The waitress openly admitted to knowing nothing about the beer they had on tap, refused to exchange a beer that the table next to us didn't like, and had to be asked 3-4 times for the drinks menu and didn't bring the drink for so long that we had finished our meal. On top, she messed up our check and when she had fixed it 20 minutes later it was with a "if you get charged twice just call us" It was a busy night, but there was no need for it to be so messy."

  • "Friday nights at any popular Boston restaurant can be a bit chaotic. But the seasoned staff at Jacob Wirth just keeps on rolling! They managed to seat us promptly after a minor reservation snafu, feed us well and got us to our show with time to spare. We have another show to see in Boston soon and I wouldn't eat anywhere else!"

  • "All of our requests were met perfectly. The service was outstanding. We felt welcome and really enjoyed our time. There was a wide food selection. We stuck to mainly apps and they were great. I did not check the wine list but good beer offerings. I would recommend and go back. Sesame Asian chix fingers were delic! Man who sat us also brought our food friendly and funny. Waitress met all our needs and made sure we were out in time for our show"

  • "My husband and had dinner before a show at the wang theater, it is a 5 minute walk whack is nice. As an appetizer we had sausage and sauerkraut balls, they were delicious but I couldn't taste the sausage, it was too ground up and only the sauerkraut came through. For dinner my husband had the wiener schnitzel sandwich and it was good if not a little heavy. My mixed grill was good, perfectly grilled bratwurst and knockwurst. Unfortunately the waiter was sub par and did not have much to add in the way of beer or food suggestions. The noise level is high and we could barely hear each other, I was considering moving to his side of the table and risk being one of "those couples" just so we could have a real conversation."

  • "I used a living social deal to visit this place for the first time last week, and I will definitely be going back! It's a great local spot with live Music (I was there for the piano sing along on a Thursday), we left around 9:30, and things were just starting to really ramp up! They have a pretty solid beer list if that is your thing. But I gotta say it was the food and cool vibe that will get me heading back that way! We split appetizers at the table and I would, no I WILL do it again! The cornbread they bring to the table is yummy too! And oh my gosh-- order the German potato salad! Being German I've eaten lots of it in my day, and I swear there is something just a little different about this stuff. It's amazingly delicious!"

  • "We had a fabulous birthday party at the BIG table. A huge table with great character that seats 12-14 people. The food was delicious - there was something for everyone, the service great and the ambience filled with history. This is the real thing. The beer selection is amazing. I've been here 3 times recently and will definitely be back. Don't miss the pretzel bites with warm ale & cheese dip. "

  • "Jacob Wirth's was great as usual! We went there for a birthday celebration with family and had a blast. The food was great. Our server was nice and attentive. The beer list is phenomenal! Highly recommend to try something from the German grill and the pretzels are fab. "

  • "Reservations were easy. Got there for a 5:30 reservation and the place was only half full, but filled quickly (being a theater night). Still the noise level was fine, despite some very large groups near us (maybe the high ceilings help). My daughter and I didn't have to yell to each other. Extensive choice of beers - helped that our server let me sample. Food was excellent and served quickly. Good variety of German foods and American classics. My daughter keeps begging me to go back for the apple streudel! "

  • "Good food and drink though the place is a bit worn. Good price and generous portions. "

  • "This is a great spot to have some German beer and sing along with the weekend piano player. The food is reasonable, and the sauerbraten is a real treat. Service was fine. The banners and upbeat decor create the feeling of an old-fashioned beer hall. One caveat -- if you are there after 8 on Th-Sat., make sure you are not seated anywhere near the piano player. Otherwise, conversation is impossible. "

  • "A great place with tasty food, prompt service. Excellent choice when one has theatre tickets and needs to be taken care of promptly."

  • "1st note is don't go by your GPS to direct you here. We tried 2 totally different GPS devices and for some reason they both sent us in the wrong direction, the restaurant is in the theater district and not over to the west side of Stuart street. This is an old Boston staple and has the look and feel of a comfortable neighborhood destination. If you want privacy sit in the side and back room. The bar was busy and lively. They have an extensive selection of beers, a very good selection in fact. We both ordered the Ruben special, the service was good, not overbearing, and the food was good as well. We would recommend this place and plan to return again."

  • "The waitstaff practically ignored our entire side of the restaurant. Need more waitstaff. Food was bland and cold. Overall disappointing dining experience. I was embarrassed to have brought my friends here. "

  • "Jacob Wirth has a fantastic beer menu with a wide variety of European and American brews. The food is almost always surprisingly good for a spot with a strong beer hall vibe. It's often loud and very energetic, especially before and after shows in the nearby theater district or during sing along and trivia nights. I'd give them a sixth star for their generous support in hosting and catering for some great charity events."

  • "Terrific pre-thater dining experience. Food (Weiner Schnitzel) was delicious. Service was excellent, competent with limited intrusion. "

  • "There is a great selection of beers as well as a fun selection of food. It seemed the service was behind since we got there at noon on a saturday and there was only one waiter. I would definitely recommend this as a great lunch stop when taking a stroll in the city."

  • "This is the BEST place to go if you want a real Boston feel. This is a place that will make anyone feel at home."
