A word from Jacob Wirth
We are the 2nd oldest restaurant in Boston and the longest consecutively running tradition in the city. The original round mahogany tables and bar have welcomed one and all both young and old for over 142 years. Share a meal and moment in history where the people who built Boston did. Where Larry Bird came after walking off the court his last night of being a Boston Celtic. Most recently where Hollywood has found inspiration featuring Jacob Wirth in "Knight and Day" and "The Company Man." Where Boston"s Big Dig was drawn on napkin... Hey when you're 130 years old see if you get everything right!
We strive for great service here but sometimes things do not always go as planned. Both good and bad we would like to hear your experience and feedback. These comments can be sent to mfitzgerald@jacobwirth.com Thank you in advance!

  • "Had a wonderful time! Food, service and ambience were terrific! Love the history as well!"

  • "Great food, great beer, great atmosphere! We were a party of 8 and all chose different items from the menu as well as different beers. Everyone was happy with their choices. Such an historical gem."

  • "Arrived a little after 4pm on a Thursday. Quick, quality service. A group of 8 tried several different dishes and appetizers, not to mention several types of beer. Everything was very good and I highly recommend it for a large family or business group to enjoy a unique ambience."

  • "Wow we had the best experience at Jacob Wirth! We all agree it would have been completely different had it not been Friday night. We were a large group, celebrating the end of our school year as a German Club. Our waiter forgot to submit our orders of appetizers, which was a bit annoying, but we still enjoyed our entrees and the couple appetizers we got later on. The apple strudel was also delicious! We loved being seated in the piano area, where we had playful banter with the piano man and the rest of the larger groups near the piano area. That was definitely the highlight of the night, and we would recommend this to anybody who is looking to have a sing a long and some good German Essen!!"

  • "Best location for theater district but the bests end there. Service was awful. We had 11/2 hours for dinner before the show and we barely made it. Food was greasy and tasteless. Seating and setting reminded me our my fraternity days. It seems they went out of their way to make the placed look awful and succeeded"

  • "Went to lunch with a friend. Good simple german food. Fresh cornbread served with the meal. Each order is attached with a suggested beer pairing which will make for interesting meals in the future. I hear fridays have a piano player with sing-a-long. They also brew their own beer - hoping to make for an interesting experience next time."

  • "Enjoyed our meal at Jacob Wirth - it seemed fairly authentic, our waitress was great, and we'd probably come back."

  • "We've been to other German/Bavarian restaurants where the menu was exclusively that, and that's what we expected. Cornbread served at the table? Nachos, fried cheese, and burgers on the menu? Not what we expected. It was definitely a sports bar and very loud, but that was due to a non-sports group. We stuck with German food choices and tried the Nibbler, and sandwiches - pastrami and Reuben. The Nibbler cost more than it should have for what we got, but it all tasted good. The sandwiches were excellent, once the pastrami was sent back as not being rare. The strudel for dessert was tasty (a little toasty dark) but excellent price. Overall, a middle-of-the-road experience."

  • "I had to provide the restaurant w/my credit card for the reservation so I had an expectation of decent service. We sat down& no one came to take our drink order for 15 min. Our waitress "Ashley M," finally came over after she had waited on the older couple seated AFTER us! She asked if I wanted my turkey sandwich w/grilled or fried chicken, I reminded her it was a turkey breast sandwich. My friend asked for the Chicken BLT sandwich w/grilled chicken, sandwich came w/fried chicken. Waitress didn't ask how the food was, I had to holler "EXCUSE ME" to get her attn. My friend asked for another beer at this point which didn't come until we had to ask AGAIN, after the Chicken BLT sandwich was brought to her w/grilled chicken but no bacon!"

  • "It was highly recommended . I made my reservation at Open table . It's raining in Boston the last three days , taxi was hard to get, but I said to my wife - it will be worth the travel. We've been to Germany several times and a little familiar with their food. When we arrived I told the non smiling Hostess about our reservation . Looked at her computer and guided us to the very last table near a stockroom and men's restroom . Have us our menu and walked away. Our waitress was so nice but seemed Clueless on what's on the menu. We just settled And ordered German sausage and chicken Wings. We got our drinks but she forgot to gave us our bread. Our dinner was alright not because of our food but because of the live music ."

  • "Service was very good and wait staff helpful with selections. One doesn't think of German food being gourmet, very much meat-potatoes, hearty for a winter appetite, and rather plain. The combos offered, variety, and presentation were wonderful - ranging from salmon to weiner schnitzel. Food was not plain at all - I didn't have to grab pepper after all. Spaetzle was excellent -- about the best I've had. Would defintiely go again. Went on a Monday so rather quiet - didn't have to make a reservation after all."

  • "Vast selection of traditional German foods and also some American favorties that were delicious. Great environment with lots of interesting photos and news clippings. We'll be back again!"

  • "Only had the wiener schnitzel. Myself in a sandwich my wife is a small plate. In the 42 years I have lived in Boston my first visit. Won't hurry to go back. Food fair, but we only had the one thing. Perhaps I am not a wiener schnitzel guy. Beer was good. Noisy, hey its a bar. People seemed to be enjoying themselves. Service was friendly and very good, no complaints there. Its a place to go before theater, club, concert. Get you in and out fast."

  • "We were seated early for our 5pm reservation (thanks!), but service was a bit lacking compared to previous visits as cornbread was not brought to the table until midway through meal and water was never refilled. Otherwise a decent early dinner at this Boston institution."

  • "After a hiatus of over 40 years came back to jake wirth's for a pre theater meal and were pleasantly surprised. This is a fun spot and the noise level was good enough to talk . Food was as expected but you really don't go there for the food. Service was good. Prices were reasonable. Oh yeah - don't forget the beer.!!"

  • "Not a place for a quiet dinner! Great european beer hall ambience couple with American sports Bar scene. If you like German food and great choice of beers, its great! Reasonable prices"

  • "Went on a Saturday night. Food and drinks were great. Over 40 beers on tap so there are plenty of options. Service was very good too considering it was pretty full. There was a piano player on the night we went which was pretty entertaining as well."

  • "Took my roomie here over the weekend for the first time and he absolutely fell in love. Beer selection is great and the food was INCREDIBLE. if you like fish, I highly recommend the pretzel salmon, and their calamari was delicious as well! It's a good idea to make a reservation, definitely well worth it!"

  • "This was a great venue to host a large(r) party. We were celebrating a friend's birthday and her return from the Peace Corps so it was a great place to hang out and catch up with one another. Loud enough to feel lively but not overwhelming. Love the pianist and the fact that he takes so many great requests - he adds a fun, relaxed vibe to the "hall." The only downside to this visit was not-so-great service - the server was pretty short with us and didn't know very much about the drink menu which made ordering a bit difficult."

  • "The food was great...I definitely recommend starting off with the Ale & Cheddar Dip and Potato Pancakes. (Potato Pancakes are awesome in the dip too!) Our waitress was nice however she forgot to put in one of the dinner orders and we had to flag her down to get drink refills. The sing along on Saturday was fun...it would definitely be a good time with a group of friends."

  • "A casual laid back feel with great traditional German food and an expansive but inexpensive beer list. Everything we had was delicious and had us asking why don't come more often."

  • "I reserved a table for 10 the day before my birthday and they easily accommodated. Although we couldn't split checks more than 3 ways, they were extremely patient with us and were eager to oblige our every requests--even when our group annoyingly requested even one more table in the middle of their busy hour and full house! The music was so fun! The German Oompah Band was delightful and very enjoyable. My party took full advantage of the open space in front of the band and used it as a dance floor. I've also been on other nights when Patrick the Piano man was there and he was a lot of fun too. Food was delicious, staff was considerate, and overall, I couldn't have asked for a better birthday venue. Thank you!"

  • "Headed in for a play in Boston, decided to try something a bit different, went for German food. Service was outstanding. I couldn't decide which beer to try, so server brought me 3 shot glasses of 3 different ones to try. Food was solid german food, nothing terribly fancy, but good quality food. I had the mixed grill (two types of sausage, german potato salad, red cabbage, etc...). Sausage was very good, cabbage was excellent. Potato salad a bit bland. Great beer selection. Solid food. Decent prices. Great location, located right near a bunch of Boston theaters. Not fine dining, but well worth the trip."

  • "We were greatly disappointed in the service at this restaurant. Although it was a very crowded time to be at the restaurant we felt that our server did not pay attention to our order or table. He forgot to bring out corn bread which comes with each table and forgot to bring out the appetizers that we ordered. Our meals came and the appetizers never showed up. When our server finally came over (meals brought by someone else) we asked what happened to our appetizers and he seemed perplexed. We told him we no longer wanted them since our meals were already here.. In order to appease us he did bring out one of the two we ordered and said it was on the house.....later the second came out and then a double set came out again."

  • "I've enjoyed JW in the past for lunch. However, this time it was too crowded, too noisy, and too warm (an unexpected warm winter night in Boston). That could have been forgiven if the server got any of our meals correct. We all ordered a different hamburgers and each one lacked something: tomatoes, mayo, lettuce, and he even forgot the salad or it would have arrived at the very end. He tried and was very patient but it just didn't work for me this time. I'd recommend going for lunch or early dinner if you're not of the age to enjoy the bar scene."

  • "There were eight of us and the waitress handled orders efficiently and accurately, giving descriptions where needed to the first time visitors to this restarurant, one of my favorites in Boston. Entrees were moderately priced and the beer choices were almost overwhelming. We were there on a Friday nite and will remember to get there earlier next time so that we will have eaten by the time the sing along starts. My wiener schnitzel was superb and i heard raves about the pork shank and the various soups. Highly recommend this wonderful NYC-style German restaurant and will be back again soon!"

  • "Friendly welcome and our corner table which I had requested was ready to go. My wife loved the German Ambience and the decor. Both of our dinners were excellent and served piping hot. Great beer selection. The wait staff was exceptionall good; A wonderful experience."

  • "If you have a lively group of friends who enjoy beer and singing Billy Joel, Beatles, and show tunes (what's not to like?), you'll have a good time at Jacob Wirth's when Mel Still is taking requests at the piano. A sing-along is so much better than karaoke since you're singing together, not waiting for your turn. I love the old wooden floors and largely unaltered 1860s interior. The hearty German food comes quickly, and there are many choices of beer on tap -- and by the pitcher!"

  • "Fun restaurant with decent food and GREAT beer Selection. The large room can be very loud when Busy as it was on Friday night. Fun though, a bit Of Old Boston."

  • "Good selection on the menu. Always consistent food. What elevated the experience was the fun piano singalong at night. My guests weren't expecting that and enjoyed it."

  • "Jacob Wirth is fun place. Huge beer selection, potato pancakes, pretzels, sing along piano. How can you go wrong?"

  • "I was very disappointed. I hadn't been there in many, many years and I was there this time with a business guest. You don't offer a fine scotch list, it was very noisy, & the food was very poor. I spent in excess of $100 and came away feeling I had been at a "fast food" restaurant."

  • "My husband and I enjoy German food and this is by far the worst we've eaten! The service was terrible. We waited at our table at least 10 minutes before anyone came over and asked us for our drinks! We ordered drinks and food right away thinking we wouldn't see them for awhile. The sauce on the Wiener schnitzel was gross! I never had sauce like that before! The bratwurst my husband got was only 1 link! He's not a big guy but 1 link is like an appetizer. I'm very disappointed with this choice."
