The pork osso bucco was a big portion, a little heavy on the salt. Nice California local wine list as well at reasonable prices. The bar has a great happy hour deal of half price wines by the glass and half price cheese board."

  • "Second time we have been there and once again the service was excellent. The seafood special (salmon) was perfectly done. The chicken sandwich was very tasty and moist and came with a very nice side salad. The prices are quite reasonable. Also, if you use the parking garage the restaurant validates for 3 hours."

  • "Beautiful Dining area.. roomy and private if you want. Made for the romantics to enjoy the privacy to the gathering event of a large group, Now the food was excellent.. Appitizers are good portions, I had crap cakes with the best sauce ever.. My daughter had the Muscles and the Chorizo blend, now that was a great creation.. Hats off to the talented Chef and staff. My filet Migon was cut with a fork only.. that should tell anyone the quality of the meats and the way it was prepared.. I would love to plan an event and use this restaurant. I was so pleased with the experience that it is on my list of Fine Dining. I have frequent many restaurants in Carmel, Monterey and Pacific Grove.. I am a great cook and very hard to please. I was impressed."

  • "Due to health issues, this was my first lunch at Jacks in quite some time. Jacks has, for years, been a favorite of my family's. My husband often dines there with clients and friends. I was delighted to find that the quality has remained consistently very good. We generally have the soup and salad bar at lunch. This is one of the best salad bars in Monterey, replete with your choice of a traditional romaine or spring salad greens, fresh vegetables, grilled chicken breast chunks, diced ham, avocado, numerous toppings, and select prepared salads, including an outstanding lentil selection. There are also two types of soup and fruit. Locals receive a 15% discount on the salad bar, so not only great taste, but good value! Definitely try!"

  • "We had dinner at Jacks because we had a TravelZoo offer but we will definitely come back even without one! The food was delicious! From the appetizers to the entree to dessert, we finished every bite! The ambiance was nice, except for the table next to us that apparently never learned how to use their "inside voices." Luckily they left and we were able to enjoy the rest of our quiet dinner. Our server was ver nice and entertaining. We liked not being "rushed", especially at the end of the night. Would definitely recommend if you're in Monterey for dinner!"

  • "We went here for a special valentines dinner. There was a valentines menu for a 4 course dinner except you share the dessert. Took awhile for a waiter to greet us( 4 minutes or so). The restaurant was booked according to open table but only about 1/3 of the tables were filled. Food was good, not spectacular. Staff didn't seem too experienced and the 18% gratuity was added to the bill."

  • "When I use dinning discounts in fine restaurants I am always a little embarrassed, but Jacks surprised me when our server made a big deal about our Travel Zoo discount voucher. Our deal came with two appetizers (one each diner), but the server said we still had extra value on our voucher and encouraged us to another item at no cost to us. She then helps us select entries and wine to get the greatest value out of our voucher. When our meals were served they were excellent, prepared as we requested, and tasted great."

  • "We spent almost a week in Monterey during Christmas. We spent a lot of time and much money eating at some of the best restaurants around. This last night in the area we just wanted something close to where we were staying that was good. We hadn't heard of Jacks Portola, but found it on Open Table. What a delightful find! The hotel and restaurant are beautiful. The food was better than we'd had at some of the top restaurants in the area, but was priced MUCH more reasonably. The ambience was great. We had a table by the back window and watched ice skaters & fire pits behind the hotel. We will definitely be returning!"

  • "The fillet mignon, ordered medium, melted in my mouth. The clam chowder included crab meat...delicious! My husband had prime rib, its only served on Fridays, fantastic. The food was displayed beautifully on our plates. We highly recommend this for romantics or groups. Its a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. The service was superb and the atmosphere was very very nice. Did I say how great the service was? Well it was great! The dining room is very spacious, and tastefully decorated. We both encourage visitors to the Monterey area to try this restaurant."

  • "Jack's is a great place for an elegant and quiet dinner. We had a 5:45pm reservation and were the only guests there for quite awhile. The waiter was helpful with the menu and was attentive throughout our meal. The steamed mussels and oyster on the half shell were fresh and wonderful. The black bass with truffle sauce was exceptional. The duck breast was tasty, but was not as tender as I have had. The crime brûlée was wonderful. So was the chocolate mousse cake with raspberries."

  • "We made dinner reservations at Jack's restaurant in the Portola Hotel and Spa in Monterey because we wanted to have a special dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The service was excellent and the food was superb. I had the breast of duck and my wife had the large sea scallops. The sauces with each entree were very tasty and the presentation was top drawer. We started with Oysters Rockefeller and they were very good and we also enjoyed a bottle of Black Stallion Cabernet wine. We have been to many restaurants in 45 years of marriage and Jack's rates right up there with the best."

  • "Had Thanksgiving at Jacks this year. Tables were simply and beautifully decorated. Food was delicious. The turkey carving at the table added a very homey touch. We loved the left overs we were sent home with as they weren't really "left over", but actually fresh sides to take home with our uneaten turkey. Very nice experience.   • "My husband and I went there for the Big Sur Half Marathon pasta dinner special, so we did not eat off the normal menu. We received salad and unlimited pasta, and found both to be very good for the price point. The service was outstanding, and the atmosphere was quiet but not dead (it was almost 9 p.m. so most of the runners had already come and gone). First check-in on Foursquare to the hotel also gets you a free appetizer. The regular menu looked good--a mix of steak and seafood options--but we did not get a chance to go back and try the regular menu."

  • "WENT TO JACK'S AS A BIRTHDAY DINNER FOR MY WIFE ALONG WITH A FEW FRIENDS. THE STAFF WAS ESPECIALLY ACCOMMODATING OUR REQUESTS TO MAKE IT *SPECIAL" FOR HER. WE WERE NEVER RUSHED. THE MENU CAME WITH HER NAME PRINTED ACROSS THE TOP WHICH SIMPLY STATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY. THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT. THE ROOMS AND OTHER AREAS WE VISITED WERE SPOTLESS - A VERY CLASSY PLACE, IN MY ESTIMATION. I WOULD RECOMMEND JACK'S FOR ANY ADULT OCCASION BUT I WOULD NOT SUGGEST THAT DINERS BRING CHILDREN TO THE DINNER - IT WOULD TAKE AWAY FROM THE ENJOYMENT OF ADULT DINERS AND IS NOT A PLACE THAT IS WARM TO CHILDREN'S NEEDS. I WILL RECOMMEND JACK'S AND PORTOLA HOTEL TO MY FRIENDS WITHOUT RESERVATION."

  • "As a frequent visitor to Monterey, I have dined many times at Jack's, in the Hotel Portola, and each time I have been highly impressed with the consistent quality of their operations. The dining room, though quite large, is so tastefully furnished with wood panelling, attractive art, and well-placed booths and tables that it gives the impression of a fine private club; immediately upon entering, the diner is greeted warmly and made to feel at home; and the menu is comprehensive yet not so overly complex as to be confusing. Needless to say, given all this professional forethought, the food itself is absolutely first-rate: market fresh, and creatively prepared. Indeed, I cannot give a higher recommendation!"
