A word from Jack's Oyster House
For nearly a century, Jack’s has been an integral part of Albany’s landscape. Long considered the hot spot for politicians and the famous, Jack’s ambiance is reminiscent of the clubby New York style restaurants so in vogue today. Opened in 1913 by Jack Rosenstein, the restaurant has been continuously operated by the same family and is now under the direction of grandson, Brad. In his pursuit of excellence, Brad persuaded French Certified Master Chef Luc Pasquier, one of only 52 in the United States, to combine their talents to create the ultimate dining experience. In their dedication to the tradition of Jack’s, they have developed a menu to satisfy their faithful clientele as well as delight a new generation of Jack’s customers. Chef Pasquier's exciting and unique cooking style, along with our staffs' warmth and hospitality, will make for many memorable dining moments. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We went to Jack's for our 31st anniversary dinner. We had the crab cakes for an app & they were excellent. I had the steak au poivre & scallops the portion was on the small side for $35 but the steak & scallops were perfect. My wife had lobster risotto for $40 & the scallops again were cooked perfectly but the lobster was tough and the risotto was tasteless. I would not go back or ever recommend Jack's to anyone. They are living off the past reservation. Maybe they should call Chef Ramsey !!!"

  • "Food was uninspired and overly priced! It was a waste of a meal. The service was good. I tried to take it as a positive that I ate somewhere nostalgic and historical. Other than than --never again!"

  • "Jack's is always a winner. Historic charm. Excellent preparations. Professional staff. And who wouldn't want to visit during downtown Albany's "Restaurant Week" when a bargain may be had?! Ryan was our earnest and efficient waiter. We love their seafood options. I went with the restaurant week fish special of Three Citrus Tilapia while my wife opted for a regular dinner menu item and the chowder-of-the-day. It's a great place to celebrate anything from an anniversary or a birthday, or just Friday night. It's a classic restaurant in every sense of that word. Highly recommended."

  • "Happened to go during Restaurant week and for $20.14 they had a nice selection of entrees. Everything was delicious. They also make great margaritas!"

  • "This was my first time at Jack's. It will definitely not be my last. My party was recommended the seafood chowder as we were looking for NE Clam Chowder and Jack's only had Manhattan. This was by far the highlight of the night. The soup was amazing! We attended during the Albany Restaurant Week promotion, so it was quite busy. But even though it was busy and people were there for a deal, servers were still completely on point and attentive."

  • "As usual, Jack's does not disappoint. The food was wonderful, excellent preparation and use of fresh ingredients. Service is unmatched. The Alaskan Halibut special with artichoke hearts and eggplant was exceptional. Comfortable booths, good sound level. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "My Mother and I were truly happy with every minute spent at Jacks. Our waiter and staff, were helpful, full of menu knowledge, and friendly. The food was delicious. Fresh, full of flavor, and overall too quality. You will feel like a five star person throughout your entire dining experience."

  • "Absolutely outstanding food and service. Had the special entree for that evening and was just unreal. The soup special they had was truly incredible as well."

  • "My family and I had a wonderful experience! The food and service was fantastic! Being able to make reservations on line (and even change the time) a plus! My family has been going to Jack's for over 40 years!"

  • "We had to ask specifically for all of the items on the 'seafood tower' appetizer. . . . it was so/so and a bit over priced. The steaks are worth the visit!"

  • "After being informed they were out of most types of wine and down to only one type of oyster, I began having doubts about this place. It was also obvious the waiter lacked any wine knowledge, but he still tried to describe each wine (inaccurately). After waiting an excessive amount of time for our food, in a more than half empty restaurant, our steaks finally arrived and they were HORRIBLE. It was one of the worst steaks I have ever had. Forgetting the above mentioned, I will say I experienced something for the first time at Jacks. I was able to get into an ARGUMENT with the waiter. He then informed my entire table that we do not know how to properly order a steak. I did not know medium rare is gray with a little pink in the middle."

  • "We had a terrific meal - i chose the crabcakes and my companion had the beef sandwich. Both of us really enjoyed our meals. The atmosphere was very formal but very approachable. We enjoyed our meals and would definitely go back."

  • "21 years ago, our family had gathered at Jack's after the viewing for my Dad. We needed a quiet place to regroup and prepare ourselves for his funeral, the next day. Jack's had been one of Dad's favorite "extravagances" and it proved to be the perfect place for us to remember him. I'd driven up from Washington to clean up his gravestone (Oakwood Cemetery, in Troy) and "spend some time" with Dad on Saturday. It was magic. The food, the memories, the magnificent service all brought me back to that time, so many years ago. Again, a wonderful place to sit, eat, enjoy and remember. I'd put it on a "must do" list, for anyone coming to Albany."

  • "Service was very slow in an almost empty restaurant. Waiter delivered butter to table and walked away with bread and returned several minutes later with bread basket. My husband clearly ordered oysters first and soup second. Soup came immediately and oysters at least fifteen-twenty minutes later. Manhattan clam chowder was unremarkable, oysters were not well shucked. Only the seafood chowder was a highlight; that was very good. Had to ask and wait for a second cup of coffee."

  • "Visiting Albany and took some family to this well known restaurant. The Seafood Chowder was one of the best I've had. Very good salmon - although not noteworthy. Very attentive and professional service. God pricing. I recommend."

  • "This steak and seafood place has seen better days. The staff is friendly, but the restaurant could use a little sprucing up. The steak diane was chewy, the mashed potatoes were dry and veggies a bit overdone. Short ribs were only average. For the price I expected more. The cheesecake was very good."

  • "I've always been a fan of the high backed black leather booths and 50'sI feel of Jacks. While the building is showing some signs of age, the service and food are still top notch. The bathroom could use a renovation, but if you don't have to go, you wont notice."

  • "My husband and I use to have dinner at Jack's Oyster House all the time when we were dating but I have to admit that Saturday was the first time that we have been to Jack's in about 4 years. It was not as we remembered it. The food was subpar and cold, the only thing that was hot was the plate, in fact the plate was so hot that i almost burned my hand trying to move it. the lobster tail that my husband ordered look like it came off a 1/2 lbs lobster. When we told the servers that our food was cold as they did was shrug and take our plates away. I am not sure what happened to Jack's in the 4 years since we have been there last but we will never go back!!!"

  • "Food was good overall and what i would expect from a high end steak/seafood restaurant. We were disappointed though when our waitress told us they were all out of oysters! It was Saturday night, not even 8PM and they supposedly only had 9 oysters left. We thought that was really strange for a place that pricey and with oyster in the name. Not only were they out but they only had Blue Point oysters. They were good but I was expecting more variety."

  • "Chose this as a location for a 90th birthday lunch. Although surprised that they didn't offer their lunch menu on Sunday, the staff and kitchen where very accommodating and helped us select smaller portion items. Food was very good. Enjoyed the chowder and salads. Crab cakes were top s. staff was very helpful with the elderly in our party."

  • "We had a very good experience we went to celebrate a birthday, from the moment we walked in we were really treated very well, our server was very knowledgeable about the food and offered me a fun drink idea! They went out of their way to make the evening Special for us. At the end of the dinner they brought out a camera took photo of us with a birthday dessert with a candle and that she give us a little card at the end of evening is just a very very good experience and I would come back again."

  • "Jack's is rightly considered an establishment of Albany - it's like stepping into a different era once you get inside. An era of good food, rich history and memories made to last. A must if you are in the Albany era."

  • "I was in Albany for a business meeting and received a recommendation to dine at Jack's Oyster House. I don't think I could have had a better evening. While our meals and drinks were very good, the best part of the evening was the service. Our waitress Name was excellent. She had great recommendations, was attentive, and very friendly. I will definitely return to Jack's next time I am in Albany."

  • "I've have always heard good things about Jack's, but never found the time to go. Went to dinner on New Years Eve, and was not impressed. For the cost of our meals, I had expected much more. I order the stuffed lobster tail and it was so over cooked, I could not even eat most of it, it was so rubbery. My brother-in-law said he has better Oyster's at The Real Seafood Company. My sister's and boyfriends steaks were burnt..for medium rare and had little flavor! I would never go back there. Not even melted butter with my steamed clams! Will never go back there. Lesson Learned!"

  • "My wife and I went to Jack's for our anniversary dinner. The service and food were outstanding. It was a night during the snow emergency and I forgot to ask which side of the street to park on, bit the waitress was thoughtful enough to make sure I was on the correct side to avoid a tow and ticket. Jack's always goes above and beyond with professional and courtesy service. She was attentive, bit not overbearing as she knew the correct time to always come and check on us. We had the Famous Clam Chowder and Shrimp Cocktail to start and for dinner my wife had the salmon while I enjoyed the Scallops. Everything was excellent and fresh, but I am partial to their Scallops when we go. They are always excellent!"
