Diner Reviews
  • "For my friends birthday, I happened upon Jack Rose and couldn't have been happier with the food or beverage selection. They have the largest selection of bourbons and whiskys that I've ever seen, and have some truly rare offerings that I've never seen in restaurants before in my life. "

  • "This is the place to go for whiskey. Great selection, great advice, great atmosphere."

  • "The most amazing single malt scotch selection I've ever seen. And Mr. Frye is a wealth of information about them. We'll be returning here for the scotch for a long time to come. But the place isn't just a great bar. Its food is quite good too. Not gourmet, but still far better than what I'd assumed we would get at a place known for its selection liquor. The only significant downside was the noise level. We came on a Friday night at 6 and the place had filled up by 7. After that point, I could barely hear the people at my table."

  • "I was a little confused when they carded me at the door, being as I have never been carded when entering a restaurant. The menu was pretty simple, but the whiskey list was enormous. The service was great, friendly and quick. The fried chicken skins was really tasty but it was probably something that I should have shared, instead of just eating the entire bowl to myself and feeling like a greedy pig. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "With over 2000 bottles available for purchase of 1oz and 2oz pours, there's literally something different to try every time you dine. The food was unexpectedly delicious! The ale-brined chicken with spaetzl was like thanksgiving without all the hassle. Whether it's pre-prohibition whisky for $88 per 1oz or an easy drinking 10yr scotch for $8, anyone can find something they like. My only complaint is that when they tried to set up a tasting flight, 5 guys were given 1 glass of each pour, without any guidance about how to get more or if the pour was just to nose, or to sample. Confusion for the diner and waiter set in heavily."

  • "Jack Rose is a definite MUST visit if you are in the DC area. Food and service are 5 star. Known for having the most liquid by volume in North America they are sure to have something you wish to drink. Be sure and stop here the next time you are in the DC area."

  • "I was visiting DC from the Southwest, and among other things, seeing a friend who lives in the area. Both of us had decided independently that the Jack Rose was a place we wanted to try (we're both scotch drinkers). So we went (on an rainy quiet night) and brought several of our friends. The food was great (not cheap, but for the quality, also not particularly expensive in the big picture of DC), the whisk(e)y book was epic. 48 pages. I tried four whiskies in all, including two from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Whiskies on that list are unique single barrel bottlings named after judges' descriptions, like "Protects Against Vampires" (a Laphraoig I tried), "Antics of a Prankster," and "A Ballerina in Stilletos." Fun stuff."

  • "Loved the huge selection of scotch they had. Everyone was nice & knowledgeable of what the scotches carried. Food was good too. Would recommend it to any Scotch lover."

  • "Jack Rose is approximately 50% Bourbon and Rye whiskey, 50% Scotch whiskey, 10% other beverage and 35% food (I know those do not add properly). Despite a succinct menu, this establishment is incredible for foodies; every item is wonderfully prepared and tastes as great as it looks. The whiskey enthusiast will be even happier. With, oh I don't know, about 2000 whiskies on hand, and a fully knowledgeable staff to help with selections, Jack Rose is CERTAIN to please. Do not hesitate, make a reservation today."

  • "With over 35 pages of different Whisky/Whiskey/Bourbon to choose from in their "menu" ... it would be impossible not to find a drink that you haven't tried before. Amazing selection ! And with 3 walls of the bar covered (floor to high ceiling) in bottles, it is a feast for the eyes."

  • "My finace and i saw this place on google and knew we had to try it. We both love whiskey and bourbon. This place was amazing. The "book" of bottles is a drinker of spirits wet dream. Great service. Staff knows what they are doing! Awesome experience!"

  • "We had an amazing night at Jack Rose... even tho we didn't get into Dram and Grain... RED was awesome... Meg was awesome... IT was great to meet Trevor and we'll definitely be going back... the food was expertly crafted... best roast chicken, cauliflower, and chicken livers EVER! the cocktails were delicious and artful... and none of this even takes into account the Whiskey Library... sumptuous old world decor... definitely a reason this place was on Thrill Lists top 20+ whiskey bars in the country! GREAT TIME!"

  • "The whiskey list is phenomenal! It can be overwhelming at times but the bartenders are very knowledgeable and eager to share information. The people who work there have a true passion for whiskey and are very proud of their extensive "whiskey library""

  • "The Jack is best know by many for it's Single Malt Scotch collection - probably the most extensive in the mid-Atlantic. The wait staff is always helpful and many know their way around the bottles. But be cautious of the "single malt consultants". They are very knowledgeable but both times I've used their services I've been steered to a bottle with limited or no store availability and very steep price. So keep the Scotch catalog in your hands while talking to them and be sure you know how much that wee dram will cost ye! All of which should not diminish the food. They have an excellent and varied menu. My only disappointment this trip was that the raw salmon appetizer had been rotated off. What could be more traditionally Scottish?"

  • "Jack Rose has a delicious menu, but the main reason to come is the enormous whiskey selection. Scotch, Irish Whiskey, Canadian Whiskey, Tennessee Whiskey, Bourbon and a few international gems, their whiskey experts will help you try something new or select a flight of one ounce pours. The regular wait staff is a little slow and less than knowledgeable, but the experts roaming the restaurant more than make up for them."

  • "Food was "meh." Overpriced for the quality. Wouldn't go back."

  • "How wonderful it was to have the opportunity to enjoy Pappy van Winkle 20 year. You simply don't find many places that have it available."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "Although Jack Rose has an impressive beverage list, we will not return because of the hour wait for mediocre food, the loud noise, and inattentive service."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "We had a family dinner here on Valentine's day when most of the clientele were couples, but we had attentive service and greatly enjoyed a flight of single malts recommended by an expert on staff who pulled the bottles off the tall shelves from a rolling library ladder and delivered them to our table. Food was excellent, portions were small, but satisfying. Menu could have had more options. The pecan pie and 'flexual' chocolate were standouts."

  • "Hands down. Not even close. Jack Rose has the finest collection of Whiskeys and Whiskys, quite possibly, ever assembled. Expressions from the worlds finest distilleries. Bourbons, Canadians, Scotches, blends, and an impressive International selection. And the standards are at shockingly reasonable prices for such a fine dining/bar experience. This place is a real favorite."

  • "Jack Rose was a gem and recommended by a close friend who hit it right on the money. The interior design is incredible, all those whiskey bottles from floor to ceiling with the rolling ladders for the bar tenders to get to any bottle. If your like me and only know the major brands, tell the waiting staff and someone will give you a break down. We had a few drinks each and all of them were spot on. We also had the steak that melted in your mouth. Everything was perfect. After dinner we ventured to the basement in a very intimate setting. We were told there were more areas up stairs to include a cigar smoking area if your into it. A definite recommendation if your in the DC area for great food, drinks, and atmosphere! We will be back!"

  • "Service is very poor - rude staff. Food is overpriced and mediocre at best. Whiskey selection is obviously, excellent. Overall, a pass."

  • "The wait staff were polite, fast, and very knowledgeable about whisky, scotch, bourbon; and they recommended some fantastic scotches based on my interests and palate. The food was delicious and plated beautifully, thought he portions were a tad small."

  • "The food was great, if on the pricey side. The real reason to come here though, is the whiskey list. They've got everything from cheap boubon to fine scotch, and they can set you up with flights for tasting. If you're bringing someone who isn't a fan of whiskey, they've got a decent selection of mixed drinks and beer on tap as well."

  • "Jack Rose is known for their brow/dark liquors. There food is amazingly good. They have a variety from hamburger/tacos/to seafood/steak. Prices are reasonable. More importantly is the taste! We also enjoy their happy hour for pre-dinner appetizers. The crowd is busy on a Friday/Saturday night. Little room at the bar. Recommend reservations. The booths are the best!"

  • "If whiskey is your passion, there are few places in the world that can match this establishment. The downstairs walls are completely covered by shelves showcasing over 1700 bottles of whiskey - including different varieties and brands from around the globe. While the restaurant menu is a bit limited, it offers some interesting choices to satisfy foodies and adventurers alike - particularly in the appetizer arena. Don't miss the delectable pork belly appetizer - a small bite, but memorable. Our entree meats were also served to perfection, and with style. We had a great meal, but all in our party agreed that menu prices far outpaced the serving sizes. The cheese and meat platter in particular was surprisingly small given the $18 price tag."

  • "What a good spot for a fun date night! But be warned - f you are a wine drinker or not a scotch drinker, the fun is more limited. The scotch drinkers among our group had a ball trying different varieties and getting recommendations from the very well informed bartenders. The food was great and the evening was a fun one. Would definitely do it again. Make sure you have reservations, as the wait can be long and the bar space is limited."

  • "After hearing so much about Jack Rose from various press outlets, we decided to give this bar a try for dinner. The ambiance is great; love the whiskey bottles lining the walls and the crowd. A little noisy for a nice dinner though. Our calamari was salty and the batter kept falling off the pieces. My steak was also way undercooked and my sides were also way too salty. The food was also very expensive for what it was. In addition, the service was very slow and not particularly good. I will say though that my cocktail was terrific; I really enjoyed that. Overall, good for drinks, but I'll pass on eating here again."

  • "Just slightly more noise then I would prefer (and this may just be on the first level). But absolutely this place is a gem- REQUEST MEG for your server if she is available."

  • "Wonderful food and drink....but not a place to converse over dinner. 2 tops are unusually long making talking 2 your fining party difficult. We were moved to a booth which helped. ...but still had difficulty hearing one another. Well beyond the noise of any restaurant I've been in lately. Still the food was delicious. ..service friendly. Seems like a great place to take friends. ...but wwouldn't go there for business dinner."
    Dined on 11/22/2013
  • "That was about the only thing we could give 2 thumbs up on this time visiting Jack Rose. The other drinks took forever, the waitress was asleep and the food was average. With all of the other great places in DC, will not go back to this restaurant."
    Dined on 11/16/2013
  • "They ran out of a couple entrees menu items by 8pm on a Saturday evening. Weren't able to accommodate my request for a scotch tasting in the cellar after dinner (request made week in advance)"
    Dined on 11/16/2013
  • "I can only speak to the downstairs section, as the upstairs was hosting a private event, but it is quite loud in the evening due to the number of people. Once it cleared out a little the noise dropped significantly. The food was excellent, just the right size portions and the whiskey menu is fantastic. They have a small but good beer menu and the wine menu was also well done. There's something for everyone but scotch/bourbon/rye lovers will be in heaven."
    Dined on 11/10/2013
  • "Bar staff are exemplary, can and will make almost any cocktail conceivable. Knowledgeable dedicated whisk(e)y staffers for any questions or recommendations. Only downside to Jack Roses is the parking, and metro is a fair walk."

  • "My husband heard about this place at a scotch tasting event so I made a res. Couldn't believe our eyes when we walked in! Thousands of bottles if scotch & bourbon - I can't even imagine what the start-up cost was. The service was the best we've had in any restaurant in years. The scotch sommelier was so knowledgeable & attentive, she selected the perfect scotches for my husband. The server was also very sweet & attentive. The food was good, not great. In particular my husband's chicken wings were dry & overcooked. We shared pork bellies which were tasty & scallops which were very flavorful but could have used less smokiness (bacon) & more scallops (the entrée portion only had a paltry 3 scallops). Overall we'll be back but mainly to drink!"

  • "The fried pickles appetizer was poor. It was very small and the pickles were very thin. The burger was tasteless. The restaurant itself however, looks really nice."
