Diner Reviews
  • "The service was was great, friendly and professional, food was high quality and very tasty. My scallops were crisp and juicy on the inside, the ciopino was all seafood in a very flavorful broth, my husband's lamb meatballs were huge and yummy. He loved his pasta. Got taste the wine before we chose. Will make this place a regular."

  • "I picked the restaurant for a bachelorette party dinner and couldn't have been more pleased. We wanted Italian but not something too too expensive, and based on the reviews and menu, I picked J. Rocco. We loved the atmosphere, the drinks, the food and the service! We knew right away we liked the waiter. He was so talkative and helpful and came around the perfect number of times. We also had help from the bartender because one of the girls wanted him to surprise her with a drink. The manager was also over at our table suggesting places to go after dinner and even brought us champagne to celebrate! The food was awesome. You could tell it was very fresh, and we liked that it was a little different than the Italian we're used to. Great place!!"

  • "We have dined at J. Rocco twice and both times found the menu full of interesting items. The recipes reveal creative interpretations of standard Italian fare. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. A welcome addition to our neighborhood."

  • "Great place! This is a very cozy Italian restaurant that is still chic. Outstanding. Food was amazing"

  • "We came with a large group of friends and had a great meal and dining experience. Service was impeccable. Ambience is cozy and energetic like a real Italian restaurant. Great choice of small plates, apps and entrees. cocktails were delicious and wine choices excellent with a taste offered for each. Food was excellent and portions are generous for sharing. Make sure to try the meatballs and the salmon."

  • "Had been there before and being able to carry on a conversation without a lot of distraction. Server was attentive, as was the manager, would highly Recommend Rocco's to anyone, and the meal was fantastic too"

  • "This was our first time at J. Rocco and we had a great meal. Glasses of wine are $5.00 Wednesdays so that put us in a good mood. We started with an Asparagus, Pecorino and White Truffle pizza which was delicious. I ordered the half chicken which came in a tasty sauce. We loved the other dishes we ordered. There were maybe four other tables the entire time we were there. I don't know why it wasn't busy. With the wine special, the place should have been packed. We'll be back."

  • "Great dishes. Very good all around. Cozy restaurant. Very friendly staff. Not too crazy about their wines, but they were accommodating to help find a nice one. Our waiter was also the bar tender, which resulted in waiting longer than we wanted to for what we needed."

  • "loved the concept of a meatball tasting, however, the shrimp one was so salty we couldn't eat it, and the rest of the sauces were just marginal. Pizza with chicken was very dry. Wait staff was very nice and professional."

  • "Pizza - flat bread was very good , pasta fat , overcooked , salad without dressing , told waiter never get it. Ordered beef meatballs gor lamb meatballs . It was pretty empty but waiter did not bother to come and check on us. Could be a great place but....."

  • "Definetelly I am going back there. Great food, big portions so you can share and not very expensive. Very good deal"
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "This is a "small plates" type of restaurant with very good food. The starters and appetizers are so good and filling, that this past time we didn't even order any pastas or entrees. Make sure you don't miss the meatballs which are superb. However, be aware that the restaurant, which is usually full, is very noisy. The brick walls don't help. We were at a long table for 7 of us and it was impossible to hear the conversations at the other end. It's probably a little more comfortable during the week."

  • "Everything we've ever had here tastes amazing!! Now whenever we are in the city, we eat here."

  • "I made reservations a whim, solely based on OpenTable and Yelp reviews. This was a kick-off dinner for a bachelorette weekend, so the criteria was a restaurant with a fun atmosphere, delicious Italian food at moderate prices. This place had it ALL! It was a fantastic experience, and all the girls had a ball! We ordered 3 bottles of wine and each girl had a full entree, plus a few apps and cocktails, and we all came out of there in under $65/person (gratuity included, split 7 ways). I HIGHLY recommend the Taglietele and the meatballs! The bread is delicious and the risotto was excellent, too! There is a terrace out front if you have a smaller party & want to eat al fresco. The dining room was lovely; perfect for a date or group of gals!"

  • "Great evening! We enjoyed everything from our appetizer to our dessert. The ravioliette was amazing as was my husband's tagliatelle. Wine and service was great! The background music provided relaxed ambiance. Can't wait to return."

  • "restaurant has a great location and concept but poorly executed by inattentive staff and kitchen. not a terrible experience but not good either. will not be returning to this place. "

  • "Food was excellent, service was very lacking. The restaurant was very understaffed, causing long waits for everything from drinks to the bill."

  • "Fabulous food at decent prices, served by staff that is knowledgeable, polite, and goes above and beyond to make sure that your dining experience is not only pleasant, but memorable. Superb execution of Italian dishes, a vast diverse alcohol selection, and the special attention to detail made this a great choice for dinner. We would absolutely recommend J. Rocco's to anyone looking for authentic Italian food and atmosphere. One of the high-points of our birthday weekend in Chicago for certain. "

  • "Another delightful meal featuring fine food, superb suggestions from the waitstaff, and excellent service. "

  • "We found it by accident and we were surprised and thrilled with our find. The staff was welcoming and engaging; helped to enhance our experience. The entire evening was a positive - beginning with the young hostess, Bernice, who greeted us so pleasantly & assured us a window seat for dinner. Kevin, the bartender was outstanding; Justin - an excellent waiter, professional & conversant ,.Jessica enhanced our evening by engaging us in entertaining conversation. Highlight - Joe & Colleen, the owners, came to our table and added to making us feel welcome. Very enjoyable; we will be back. "

  • "Having been there before I thought what a great place to celebrate 2 birthdays. The pea soup and deserts were good, had we stopped there we would have been fine. The chef may have confused other spices for salt. Everything else over salted and cold, with the exception of the pasta which was full of pepper. I brought home a meatball for my husband who likes salt. It was inedible. We did mention it and got some gelato. Server was very nice but kept cleaning our table while we were eating. It was a Tuesdsy night, weren't very busy but we felt rushed. I did contact the restaurant but they never returned my email. I was embarrassed because I had suggested J Rocco."

  • "Our friends recommended this place so we decided to check it out. The waiter was very helpful giving recommendations. The ambiance is cool, a bit noisy for my taste though. We liked the meatballs and they were fun to eat. Don't get the cold cauliflower, it's boring. "

  • "Space looks great (warehouse brick conversion) but it's extremely noisy (even at 1/3rd full my wife and I could not hear each other at a small table, by the time it filled up we could have used those NASA noise canceling headphones they used on the space shuttle. My wife had the half- chicken.... .....which was an interesting flat shape, I assume they press them flat in a large mechanical press prior to freezing. No doubt they have better shipping density this way, but it doesn't make it very appetizing. I had the lamb meatballs (which were interesting, sort of a Soylent Green texture) and the risotto. So a hearty 2.5 stars. PS. - in the Open Table reservation I asked for a special touch, no one at the resto acknowledged the request."

  • "Give the meatballs a try, pasta bowls are great too! Their desserts are changed every two days so give one of them a try too!"
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "The ambience is wonderful and the service was great. The pizza appetizer was very good and the menu had many wonderful selections. Unfortunately the fish I had (cod) was dry and did not taste fresh despite the fact that it was considered one of the specialties. My friend had salmon and while she didn't say anything, the piece of salmon was flattened and also looked dry. I really want to like this place and I'm willing to try it again."

  • "It's a nice small restaurant and we went with a large group but we were still able to talk. The wait staff was very attentive. Food was very good. The only thing I didn't really care for was the ceasar salad because it had alot of anchovies on it. I realize that is traditional but too strong for me. Meatball sampler was great as an appetizer for the group."

  • "Dined here this past Sunday evening after reading reviews on Trip Adivsor and Open Table and it was within walking distance to our hotel. Should have walked away after we entered the restaurant and no one was at the maitre d' stand to greet us and no one was behind the bar. The restaurant had a few tables with patrons and several that were not cleaned from prior guests. When greeted we were told we could have any table as the place was not busy. Overall the food was marginal, certainly nothing to write home about or cause to return. Not sure if this was an off night or because it was Sunday no one really cared. Sadly, I won't be returning as Chicago has way to many other Italian options with better ambience and preformance."

  • "We visited on a Sunday night when the restaurant was uncrowded. It was a bit disappointing. All the menu choices were very heavy and large. Even the pea soup was thick with meat, bread, cream, potatoes and a variety of other ingredients which I couldn't really identify. The chicken pizza had a great crust, but was weighted down with too much cheese and way too much garlic. The best dish was the romaine salad with fried anchovies, which was large enough for two people to share. The extremely limited wine list had just a few decent wines, although the prices were quite reasonable. With all the great casual Italian restaurants in the area, this one will need to improve dramatically if it's going to survive."
    Dined on 4/6/2014
  • "Always wanted to try this restaurant, it had great reviews on yelp! Unfortunately, it was not a great experience. First off, the place was dead! Secondly, the food a was overpriced for the quality. We ordered shrimp meatballs and they were fishy, the pizza had no taste and the burrata was cold before it got to the table."

  • "Was hoping for a quiet dinner, but this is not necessarily a quiet spot :) The food was good, meatball (we had lamb) were excellent and the seafood stew also quite good. All in all a good experience except it was loud for us."
    Dined on 4/2/2014
  • "Very quiet, waiter was new, didn't know the menu that well. Specials that are on their website are apparently just for lunch; misleading. Pasta was good, but salty. Might go back to try the flatbread & meatballs."

  • "our server ken was beyond terrrrrifffffic his enthusiasm knowledge and vocabulary made the dinner taste even better....great beer selection wonderful pizza liked the chicken and the bread pudding was another highlight we will be back...."

  • "Really enjoyed our dining experience here. Everything we had was delicious and they were able to accommodate changes to pasta dishes for other chosen pastas and sauces. Highly recommend trying the meatball sampler. The flatbread pizza was also a great starter. I will definitely come back to try more things on the menu. Also, the service was great!!"

  • "handmade pasta, fresh baked bread, rustic fish entrees but if you want to kill it...ask for Victor and let him curate your wine parings - this resident sommelier is a human almanac of italian wine knowledge and he will hit the nail on the head. the owner was gracious and made sure to visit the table once we were comfortably near the end of our meal for a good old fashioned chicago hello. it's may not be Michelin Star dining but it's good eating in an unpretentious atmosphere. salud!"

  • "As previously experienced - the food, service, and hospitality was outstanding. Our party of four unanimously agreed that J. Rocco is an exceptional find. The salmon with beans and Italian sausage was great. Our waiter was well versed on the food and wine and went the extra length to make our experience exceptional. We all will certainly be back!!!"

  • "Nice ambiance. Romantic. Modern. Great service. Really enjoyed the small plates and appetizers. We skipped the main dishes and ordered several small plates. I would definitely go back."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "Although the upstairs dining area is ideal for large groups, the service is greatly lacking. Our entrees took half an hour to come out, in fact we thought they had forgotten to serve them to us because no one even gave us any status updates. The servers also forgot to bring out a birthday dessert, but we were already short on time because of the extremely delayed dinner and didn't bother reminding anyone. Entrees were confused between diners. The taste of the food was decent - scallops were the only standout - highly recommend. The lamb meatballs had so much bread in them you could actually taste it, couldn't taste the lamb at all, could have been any other meat. Quite a few items were not available, because of which we chose to dine here."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "We love the menu, with a variety of different items. The salads are great and the rissotto is wonderful. Do not miss the bread pudding it is a generous portion that will put a pound or two on you but it is worth it."

  • "Not the biggest spot or trendy, but they did a very nice job for a quiet dinner with the wife. Attentive service, good quality, well presented, and fair portions for the price. We'd go back next visit to Chicago."
