Diner Reviews
  • "Space looks great (warehouse brick conversion) but it's extremely noisy (even at 1/3rd full my wife and I could not hear each other at a small table, by the time it filled up we could have used those NASA noise canceling headphones they used on the space shuttle. My wife had the half- chicken.... .....which was an interesting flat shape, I assume they press them flat in a large mechanical press prior to freezing. No doubt they have better shipping density this way, but it doesn't make it very appetizing. I had the lamb meatballs (which were interesting, sort of a Soylent Green texture) and the risotto. So a hearty 2.5 stars. PS. - in the Open Table reservation I asked for a special touch, no one at the resto acknowledged the request."

  • "Give the meatballs a try, pasta bowls are great too! Their desserts are changed every two days so give one of them a try too!"

  • "The ambience is wonderful and the service was great. The pizza appetizer was very good and the menu had many wonderful selections. Unfortunately the fish I had (cod) was dry and did not taste fresh despite the fact that it was considered one of the specialties. My friend had salmon and while she didn't say anything, the piece of salmon was flattened and also looked dry. I really want to like this place and I'm willing to try it again."

  • "It's a nice small restaurant and we went with a large group but we were still able to talk. The wait staff was very attentive. Food was very good. The only thing I didn't really care for was the ceasar salad because it had alot of anchovies on it. I realize that is traditional but too strong for me. Meatball sampler was great as an appetizer for the group."

  • "Dined here this past Sunday evening after reading reviews on Trip Adivsor and Open Table and it was within walking distance to our hotel. Should have walked away after we entered the restaurant and no one was at the maitre d' stand to greet us and no one was behind the bar. The restaurant had a few tables with patrons and several that were not cleaned from prior guests. When greeted we were told we could have any table as the place was not busy. Overall the food was marginal, certainly nothing to write home about or cause to return. Not sure if this was an off night or because it was Sunday no one really cared. Sadly, I won't be returning as Chicago has way to many other Italian options with better ambience and preformance."

  • "Always wanted to try this restaurant, it had great reviews on yelp! Unfortunately, it was not a great experience. First off, the place was dead! Secondly, the food a was overpriced for the quality. We ordered shrimp meatballs and they were fishy, the pizza had no taste and the burrata was cold before it got to the table."

  • "We visited on a Sunday night when the restaurant was uncrowded. It was a bit disappointing. All the menu choices were very heavy and large. Even the pea soup was thick with meat, bread, cream, potatoes and a variety of other ingredients which I couldn't really identify. The chicken pizza had a great crust, but was weighted down with too much cheese and way too much garlic. The best dish was the romaine salad with fried anchovies, which was large enough for two people to share. The extremely limited wine list had just a few decent wines, although the prices were quite reasonable. With all the great casual Italian restaurants in the area, this one will need to improve dramatically if it's going to survive."

  • "Was hoping for a quiet dinner, but this is not necessarily a quiet spot :) The food was good, meatball (we had lamb) were excellent and the seafood stew also quite good. All in all a good experience except it was loud for us."

  • "Very quiet, waiter was new, didn't know the menu that well. Specials that are on their website are apparently just for lunch; misleading. Pasta was good, but salty. Might go back to try the flatbread & meatballs."

  • "Really enjoyed our dining experience here. Everything we had was delicious and they were able to accommodate changes to pasta dishes for other chosen pastas and sauces. Highly recommend trying the meatball sampler. The flatbread pizza was also a great starter. I will definitely come back to try more things on the menu. Also, the service was great!!"

  • "handmade pasta, fresh baked bread, rustic fish entrees but if you want to kill it...ask for Victor and let him curate your wine parings - this resident sommelier is a human almanac of italian wine knowledge and he will hit the nail on the head. the owner was gracious and made sure to visit the table once we were comfortably near the end of our meal for a good old fashioned chicago hello. it's may not be Michelin Star dining but it's good eating in an unpretentious atmosphere. salud!"

  • "As previously experienced - the food, service, and hospitality was outstanding. Our party of four unanimously agreed that J. Rocco is an exceptional find. The salmon with beans and Italian sausage was great. Our waiter was well versed on the food and wine and went the extra length to make our experience exceptional. We all will certainly be back!!!"

  • "Nice ambiance. Romantic. Modern. Great service. Really enjoyed the small plates and appetizers. We skipped the main dishes and ordered several small plates. I would definitely go back."

  • "Although the upstairs dining area is ideal for large groups, the service is greatly lacking. Our entrees took half an hour to come out, in fact we thought they had forgotten to serve them to us because no one even gave us any status updates. The servers also forgot to bring out a birthday dessert, but we were already short on time because of the extremely delayed dinner and didn't bother reminding anyone. Entrees were confused between diners. The taste of the food was decent - scallops were the only standout - highly recommend. The lamb meatballs had so much bread in them you could actually taste it, couldn't taste the lamb at all, could have been any other meat. Quite a few items were not available, because of which we chose to dine here."

  • "We love the menu, with a variety of different items. The salads are great and the rissotto is wonderful. Do not miss the bread pudding it is a generous portion that will put a pound or two on you but it is worth it."

  • "Not the biggest spot or trendy, but they did a very nice job for a quiet dinner with the wife. Attentive service, good quality, well presented, and fair portions for the price. We'd go back next visit to Chicago."

  • "2nd visit within a week and I wasn't disappointed - the pasta is fresh and light and the flavors are superb! The attention from our waiter was amazing and his knowledge of the regions of Italy and the wines is phenomenal! Quickly becoming my favorite Italian Restaurant in the city!"

  • "Unfortunately, due to the poor weather, the restaurant was incredibly quiet.... not their fault. However, perhaps because of the low turn-out of customers, the regular chef was maybe not working. It was a below average experience when it came to the food. One would have hoped they would have had the time and focus to make what few dishes they were serving top-notch, but no, this wasn't the case. Not like my previous experiences at this restaurant."

  • "The restaurant was great for our large group (12), we were accommodated upstairs, I was warned there would be tvs, which was fine, though I would not have chose the channels they chose (CMT, MT2, Lifetime). So almost every other time our server came to the table he started with "I have to tell you something," which was kind of funny at first but got less funny as the night went on. First it was about the wine list, but at the end it was that their computer had issues and it took an hour for us all to pay. Thankfully they made up for it with wine on the hourse. Overall, all of the food was really great, we had a variety of meatballs, pizzas and pastas, it just seemed they weren't quite ready upstairs."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "The highlight of our J Rocco experience was the meat and cheese plate. They did not skimp on either, and it was delicious. The meatball (chicken) was less desirable than the reviews made us believe it would be. Overall, the food was good but because the drinks were overpriced, we won't return. Well, unless we want to make a meal out of a meat and cheese platter."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Knowledgeable, helpful server who made wine recommendations based on our different tastes. My friend and I split the chickpea "meatballs" as an appetizer. As a vegetarian, I love having veggie options. I enjoyed it, tasted like a big falafel! Our husbands split the chicken meatballs. I loved my gnocchi and my husband loved his pizza. We would definitely return."

  • "We started with the scallops and bowl of sweet pea soup. Both were amazing but the soup is by far the best I have ever had! Thanks to our waiter's recommendation, we tried the meat and cheese board which was delicious. The meats complimented the cheeses so well. Our entrees were out of this world. I got the pesto pasta that came with the Frasca sauce (the Frasca sauce is so good!). My husband got the short ribs over polenta. The meat was so tender. The polenta was really good with the meat or to dip the fresh, warm bread in. The wine with dinner hit the spot. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to any Italian foodie. My husband and I love Italian food and J. Rocco is one of our favorites!"

  • "First time going to J. Rocco for my husband and I and we will not be going back. No heat on Saturday night and my napkin and mine was damp. I got a glass of the super tuscan which was the last bottle but he said there were 4 glasses. Ordered pumpkin soup and split pea soup to start. The pumpkin had no flavor but the split pea was good according to my husband. I got the lobster risotto again very bland and my husband got the pork chops where were breaded and greasy. Sat with empty wine glasses. The waiter finally comes and now they are out of the super tuscan but offers me a higher priced wine for the same price, which I got to try. Done eating by the time it came & it wasn't the wine he had me taste, a much lower quality. Won't be back."

  • "J Rocco has quickly become my favorite place to wine and dine! It's warm ambiance has kept me coming back for more during this relentless Chicago winter. My boyfriend and I unanimously decided on J Rocco for our Valentine's dinner-date and we could not have been more pleased. Our server, Victor, suggested wonderful dishes and wine pairings, making the evening exemplary. A few of our personal favorites were the seared scallops, gnocchi, and risotto. Another element that intrigues me about J Rocco is the owner's strong presence on the floor and his consistency in acknowledging customers. It's evident that making customers feel valued is high priority at J Rocco. Every experience there has been pleasurable and more than satisfying!"

  • "J. Rocco is good Italian food - not the best I've had in the city, but good. The service is always so-so. My favorites include the octopus & barrata, & we usually opt for 1 pasta (I like the gnocchi) & 1 pizza (I like the one with Italian sausage or apples & prosciutto). You also have to get meatballs - usually the beef ones are my favorite, but this past time, they were a little overcooked & the pork ones were AMAZING. I always have a fair experience, & the restaurant is very warm & inviting. A good place to go if you're looking to get in somewhere last minute, or share pizza/meat & cheese board, & wine at their bar. PS - I have seen at least one of the Chicago Blackhawks dining in the restaurant before..."

  • "I enjoyed our dinner at J. Rocco, but think the restaurant needs to continue to work out a few kinks. The downstairs areas is really cute and vibrant, but we were sitting upstairs which seemed a little less thought out. At an 8pm dinner on Saturday night ,they were out of prosecco, which seems like a no no for an Italian restaurant. Our food was all good, but a few things were a bit different than expected. The beet salad and octopus were both mainly greens with beets or octopus chopped and sprinkled on top. All in all, I will go back after a few months, but feel like they have a few kinks to continue to grow on."

  • "We had a wonderful Valentine Dinner at J Rocco. We were seated upstairs and enjoyed the ambiance. Our party had a great server that made sure we had anything we wanted from drinks to dessert. The food was delicious, as usual. We enjoyed sharing the pizza and meatballs followed by the amazing sturgeon and lamb. We had a truly enjoyable evening and will be returning as soon as we can get back. Wonderful Valentine's Day!!"

  • "From the bread, to the Italian sausage with pepper relish appetizer, to our two entrees - Orchetti and Tagliolini, our meal was outstanding! The spices and flavors were unlike any other Italian food we've had. Simply delicious! We can't wait to return!!!"

  • "Recently took my wife out for dinner here along with some of our friends. We had an rsvp and when we arrived our table wasn't quite setup just yet, they provided us with a free pizza on the house which I found to be very nice. In additional, an additional person came late and the restaurant swiftly adjusted our seating location to accommodate us. The food was perfect, the service a little slow at times, but nothing alarming. The food was great, they even brought out complimentary desserts since it was my wife's birthday. Overall great experience, we'll be back again!"

  • "I've dined at "J Rocco" numerous times - and the experience is always exceptional! Originally referred to by my brother last Summer, I've had the opportunity to take clients, friends and family over the last 6 months or so. We've always started with a selection of bread, meats and cheeses, and saved room for both pasta and meatballs! Highly recommend making several selections and sharing. Several very good wines to choose from, and recommend seeking server recommendations. Highly recommend exploring a gelato to finish."

  • "J. Rocco is unique in a city full of good Italian restaurants. The menu runs from hot and cold appetizers, to pizzas and meatballs, to full entrees. There is also a wonderful selection of soups. We sampled the pumpkin soup which was perfect on a cold night and the mussel soup which was really more like a meal of chopped vegetables, mussels and broth. The sturgeon on pureed acorn squash was excellent and unusual since so few restaurants serve this fish. One person had the cioppino that was filled with mussels, scallops, tilapia and other fish and seafood. The surprise is that the prices are very moderate. Four of us ate for $220, including 6 drinks, one dessert, tax and tip. We have enjoyed other restaurants where Steve Chiappetti was chef."
