Never heard of this place and just found it on Open Table when looking for a restaurant near Holy Name Cathedral. We loved it...what a gem! Great menu, very cordial service from everyone (especially our server, Chase), and EXCELLENT food! They specialize in different types of meatballs (pork, shrimp, beef, chicken, and lamb)...try the $15 four meatball sampler for an appetizer. We will definitely be back and bring our friends!

My wife wanted to try something new. She had seen J Rocco's and wanted to try it. The authentic homemade dishes along with the attentiveness, friendliness, and knowledge of the staff was exactly what we were looking for. I think we have found our home base.

We needed a reservation for 10 @ 7:30 on a Friday and found this table at 5pm, so I felt lucky. Food was good but not great. Pizza was a little heavy on the cheese, beans under the salmon were not hot, but the service was good and the management made you feel like they cared. One guy ordered no dairy on this entrée and it came with grated cheese on top. The waitress IMMEDIATELY brought another plate of pasta, so fast it was freaky! Great service. I'll give this place another shot for sure.

Recently had dinner for four at J. Rocco's. Good location. Good atmosphere. We had some tasty seasonal cocktails to start our meal. We had lamb meatballs as an appetizer. They were nicely seasoned and delicious. (One serving was good for two people.) I had the rossotto with mushrooms and asparagus. It was excellent. The pizza was also very good. Our waiter Julien was very attentive to our needs and helped to make good recommendations. The restaurant was not too crowded so it was a good place to have conversation. Overall, it was a very pleasant dinner. I would go back!

OpenTable had this as the closest Italian location w/available table. It was serendipity that brought us here and one of the best nights I've had eating out. Our waiter Chase recommended 2 very good wines: red for me & white for the bestie. I had the scallops special & bestie had the spaghetti, w/chicken & bacon meatballs. Dinner is served family style - all incredible. The scarpino drink was made tableside. J.Rocco makes their own limoncello, so our drink was made from scratch and awesome. Also had a delicious cranberry-lime limoncello, The food was fantastic & our service was outstanding. We made fast friends with Jodi, the manager. So we had an amazing dinner & made new friends with the staff who treat you like long lost family.

Menu is varied and all good but we always get lamb meatballs somewhere in the meal. They're super and the fresh baked bread is great for the sauce. Pizzas are inventive and the short rib gorganzola is excellent. The servers here are well trained and the owner is attentive as well.

The service is great. The room is very nice. The atmosphere is good. The food...not so much. The menu and it's execution needs work. The pasta is heavyweight the bread was stale. The sauces for pastas were not very exciting, although they were trying to be "special". Note to management....please fix the food.

What a find!!! The Scallops and Salmon Special last night were definitely a highlight of the meal. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome which is refreshing especially in the River North area. Our server was very knowledgeable and guided us through the menu. The wine list was impressive also with some great values. I will definitely be back!! Keep up the good work J Rocco!!

Having never heard of this restaurant until I conducted an Open Table search, I was very pleasantly surprised to find a restaurant gem. The atmosphere was very nice, the noise level tolerable and most importantly the food was great. The four of us shared a pizza and a pasta dish as well as the meat ball sampler. Everything was well prepared and nicely presented. We had a really nice evening and will definitely be returning.

Everything about J Rocco was great starting by the charming hostess Berenice who was friendly and inviting, the server was great and knowledgeable. I have been a long time fan of Chef Javier Perez's food and I was wowed time and time again by his specials of the evening, we had an amazing octopus served with a farro salad and saffron aioli, as a pasta course we had his delicious butternut squash ravioli and for entree a salmon dish that was to die for paired perfectly with the bottle of wine our server Bladymir suggested. All made even better by the graciousness of the manager Jodi and all of her amazing staff, we will be back for sure!!

We were challenged to find a reservation for 10 people the night before the Chicago Marathon and this was one place that was available. We had 4 kids in tow and without a kids menu we were forced to find options they all agreed to on the menu to be split. They were accommodating in coming up with some basic pasta plates. We waited almost an hour for our food to arrive which doesn't go over well with anyone. The ravioli was ok but not anything unique. The gnocchi was better. The meatballs were heavy and not very flavorful. The wait staff made up for it with a round of free ice cream for the kids.

We had a 6:00 reservation, but when we arrived, there seemed to be a lot of confusion about where to seat us. It took at least 15 minutes for them to find out table. Although our waiter was great and came over right away, it took over an hour and a half for our salad to arrive, and even longer for a meat and cheese plate. We got our entrees 2 hours after ordering them. There was a large party in the upstairs room, which seemed to be contributing to the craziness, but the wait seemed ridiculous to us. Our waiter was very apologetic, but the managers never came to apologize or explain. When the food finally arrived, it was delicious, so I wish I could give it a higher rating!

This is more of a neighborhood restaurant and we were "out of towners" but welcomed to celebrate my wife's birthday. Our friends from Phoenix were confused by the ordering of small plates that are served family style. All worked out good with three "bowls" of different food. The, and us, had plenty to eat at a reasonable price.

I love this place. Went once with cousins who live across the street and go all the time. The food and the service is amazing. The last time I went I brought my best gal friends who are big foodies and very critical -- and they gave it rave reviews. Pastas are large, so you can share if you want. Every time I see their facebook posts of food of the day I want to go again. You have to try the meatballs -- outstanding -- along with just about everything else on the menu.

We picked this restaurant when trying to find an Italian restaurant in Chicago near where we were staying after reading some reviews on Open Table. Our waiter was very nice, however service overall was mediocre at best as was the food. None of the appetizers or entrees were really hot. The wine list was not available and when we asked for a Chardonay there were none available. After the food, we ordered 2 espressos that were really not espressos and they did not offer any specialty coffee drinks for after dinner.

This was our first visit here, even though we live 1.5 blocks away. Everything was excellent. They were out of the wine we ordered, so the server brought samples of 3 similar wines for us to taste before ordering, a great gesture. The food was excellent, 1 pasta dish and 2 fish dishes. The menu thought not large is extremely varied, with many different appealing choices. Can't rate the desserts, since we were too full to order any!

I picked the restaurant for a bachelorette party dinner and couldn't have been more pleased. We wanted Italian but not something too too expensive, and based on the reviews and menu, I picked J. Rocco. We loved the atmosphere, the drinks, the food and the service! We knew right away we liked the waiter. He was so talkative and helpful and came around the perfect number of times. We also had help from the bartender because one of the girls wanted him to surprise her with a drink. The manager was also over at our table suggesting places to go after dinner and even brought us champagne to celebrate! The food was awesome. You could tell it was very fresh, and we liked that it was a little different than the Italian we're used to. Great place!!

Came here during my week long visit to Chicago. It was a quiet evening, and the three of us sat outside, enjoying a nice summer evening. The waiter was great with solid food and drink recommendations. We stated with the charcuterrie and cheese plate and mixed greens and beet salad, followed by a couple of pasta dishes (traditional ragu and a special - mix of pesto and marinara sauce) , finished with a bread pudding. Overall, it's a solid restaurant with great service.

I eat here often because it is close to where I live and you can count on consistently good Italian food. I have gone here with party of two, party of 6, and party of 12 and had wonderful experiences with all. I like the fact that this is a small place - reminds me of neighborhood NYC places which I long for often. I find most Chicago restaurants way too big. If you prefer small, welcoming, neighborhood gems with consistently good food. This place is for you.
