I think they would do well to change the appetizer selections. The crab cakes are good but cheese plate fair and Calamari has improved but if your a real Calamari lover you might not find it to be the best. Salads are done well. Combo of filet and scallops could provide more than 3 very small scallops for the price. Wait Service personnel is always top notch here - they are very engaging and know the menu and wine selections thoroughly. After stepping inside from a bright, sunny day, it was extremely dark and the windows were covered. However, the service and the food were superb. After the meal, we both received red carnations. It was very refreshing to find such a fine restauratnt so close to home. He got the blue cheese and I asked for the truffle buttler (two different cuts of steak). It was not a biggie because we both liked what we got. This is why we didn't tell the server.

It was our son's birthday and I had noted this on our reservation form. There was a "Happy Birthday" card on the table when we arrived. This is why J. Gilbert's beef is deservedly legendary -- perfectly cooked and with great depth and richness of flavor. The accompanying crabcake was very neaerly "just a pile of seasoned crab meat," that is PERFECT! The Chocolate Velvet cake is a bit mis-named. It is less cake (NO resemblance to red velvet cake) and more over-the-top combination of dark chocolate ganache, intensely flavored chocolate mousse and a bottom layer of almost flourless brownie, accompanied by fresh raspberries, one of which was tucked under the accompanying scoop of raspberry ice cream. Service was attentive, not fussy, and good-humored without over familiarity.
