Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed this place so much. The food was delicious and nicely prepared and served. It was a reunion for the three of us and so much fun...a great place for friends to meet. We can't wait until the next time....sushi fans...don't hesitate to give this place a try! It is wonderful!"

  • "The food here is delicious, fresh, diverse. What the place lacks in looks it makes up for in food. Everytime I go there I wish it had windows, an opening to the outside, something. I think the look - from the outside and inside perspectives - is distracting to the good food they have - as it takes good reviews to get you to want to go in. Once you're in, you are satisfied and happy - just wishing for a glimpse of light or outside atmosphere."

  • "Izakaya made our special occasion very pleasant. Food was very good and fresh. The chef went out of his way to make some special dishes as a token of his good will and to keep the special atmosphere going. The place had some children and families around but the restaurant is big enough and laid out in such a way that none of that interfered with our event. If requested the corner by the entrance could be very private."

  • "The food quantity and quality has gone down a smidge. It's still good but they appear to be cutting back a bit on both. The nice thing is the late happy hour but the menu for that is very limited. Fun place, great music. I'd recommend for a late night bite and drinks."

  • "I walked into this neighborhood restaurant and really enjoyed the overall experience. The food was good (which is not a bad thing), the service prompt and attentive, and it was reasonably priced for all the food we got. I recommend it, especially if you're looking to get a bunch of items to share with a group."

  • "The food ad service is always excellent. An excellent Sake list."

  • "Fresh and tasty. The server was very helpful. Some rolls were very inventive by combining fresh fruit with the rolls. A good neighborhood find."

  • "We made our res for 8:00pm on Open Table and waited 40 minutes for a table for 4! This has never happened to us before, usually we are seated immediately when we book on Open Table."

  • "The server was a novice at best. The acoustics caused every noise in the place to be as loud as possible. Some of the food was good, but as an overall experience, I wouldn't want to repeat it."

  • "we've been living in the area for 2 years and never been there...too close to home. But now ..as new parents in need of a break, we found it very convenient. It was a good experience overall, the only thing I didn't like was that even though we had reserved a table for a Thursday evening dinner, when we got there they had no table available for us....we had to sit at the bar. As for the rest, no complaint, food was excellent and we had a good time pros: good location, great food, good service, nice ambience cons: don't take reservations seriously"

  • "The staff was very busy, but everything came right, the Asian cooks on the bar kind of rude but they are like that all the time, we reserve a table, they have open table, but they don't have a host, so one of the servers came and said: "seat wherever you like", so I don't see the reason to make a reservation, overall was ok."

  • "Pros: Amazing sushi. Fun, delicious food, energetic experience. Reasonable prices. Con: service wasn't that good. It felt like they were rushing us to order like hurry Be done. Kinda made the experience awkward, other than this, my overall rating will be great to almost excellent. The food was amazing tho-"

  • "The worst sushi restaurant I have ever tried. Service and food. It was a disaster. Waiter had absolutely no knowledge about the menu. It took forever to order something and about 40 min waiting for appetizers alone. Black Cod came full of bones and they wouldn't even admit that it was their fault. Terrible place to go out. It was our first and hopefully the last time there."

  • "We had one lunch special and many small plate every thing was very good"

  • "Food was average. Waitress couldn't answer any questions about the food, level of spiciness etc. Wrong orders brought to table. Our order brought elsewhere. Had 3 different people helping us. Sent something back that still ended up on the check. First and last time here. Too many other great sushi places nearby."

  • "The sushi was very good. The service and prices were also great. The only thing that let the place down was the dark, uninspiring decor. The restaurant doesn't have any windows to speak of and gives the impression of being in a bomb shelter. The service was friendly and attentive."

  • "Service was horrible, no wonder we could get reservations during prime time Saturday night Chicken tasted like fish"

  • "Good food and quick service. Gets way too loud though"

  • "Great food but really, really, really loud and noisy….could be the acoustics. Difficult to have a conversation. The food was delicious, however."

  • "food's pretty good but it's awkwardly quiet in there."

  • "I love this place! Great sushi. The only thing I would not order is the four piece sushi on the Happy Hour. The pieces were small, but everything else was great. I love the crispy rice with spicy tuna. The portion was generous. The yellowtail jalepeno carpacio is yummy. Prices are reasonable and servers are nice. I wish they served the Green Tea Tempura fried ice cream for dessert. It would be perfect, but we took a walk two blocks to the partner restaurant Midori for dessert. The Green Tea Tempura fried ice cream was so good. Izakaya M Sushi is one of my favorites."

  • "The Shernan Oaks area has a plethora of great sushi options, and Izakaya M can certainly be added to the ever-growing list. The standards items (spicy tuna roll, edamame, sunomono salad...etc.) Were great and we were also impressed with the unique items on the menu. Hamachi "shooters or cubes" were delicious and fresh. We couldn't decide between a few different dessert items because they all looked excellent: we ordered 4. Polished off them all! The Robata was an unexpected surprise and will also serve as another reasson to return to Izakaya M."

  • "I was surprised at the quality of the sushi. It was our second visit here as the first one was superb also."

  • "I was walking by and stumbled upon Izakaya M. It looks like a whole in the wall. It is pretty dark and cozy in here. So it would make a good date night. And to top it off the food was great so I will be going again. You must try the Miso Salmon skewers!"

  • "This is a neighborhood gem. I hadn't been for a few months and took a friend that was in town. She loved it! Many new items on the menu that sounded great. Also, they have a late night Happy Hour from 10:00-11:00 pm. A short window, but good to know if you are craving sushi late night."

  • "Good sushi (not the best) and good service, albeit overpriced on certain rolls and $2 extra for brown rice. Really??"
    Dined on 3/28/2013
  • "We only had sushi. Attempts for very creative dishes but ended up being attractive in appearance but relatively tasteless. Disappointed."

  • "Refreshingly different dishes as well as a different spin on some of the the same dishes."

  • "Not the best Sushi that I have had but neither are the rest of Sushi houses in LA. The service is very good, unique setting and priced nicely. I like that they offer brown rice with their sushi. I would return to Izakaya."

  • "Never again - faux Japanese food, almost no service at all, totally surreal and not in a good way; but then I discovered it was an offshoot of the simply terrible Midori (all you can keep down)Sushi. Ahhh so!"
    Dined on 1/31/2013
  • "Attentive & quick service, friendly servers, nice atmosphere and decent sushi, albeit the scallops were slightly under cooked. I'd give them one more shot though."

  • "The food was truly amazing. A wonderful blend of traditional Japanese with a little Korean fusion, and variation of fusion from other cultures by dish. Excellent cooked and raw food--a rarity in sushi restaurants. We were truly impressed, and are already calling everyone we know to tell them how much they need to go. It's even great if you've got people who think they don't like Japanese food--there's something for everyone, at low prices, but high quality dining. My husbands first comment was "This is better than Ramsey's!""

  • "We love this place! Ryan, the owner is very hands on and gets to know the customers. He sent us a comp dessert that was amazing, tempura cheesecake! One of our orders was wrong, and the waiter tool care of it with no complaint. They have a great $8 lunch and a great happy hour too."

  • "We found out when we got there that OpenTable reservations are for the sushi bar only, which was disappointing because we'd have preferred a table for our party of 3. Food was good but there are better sushi options in the neighborhood."

  • "I didn't enjoy this restaurant. The food was alright, but nothing like the other Katsuya restaurants in terms of preparation and quality. The wait staff was inattentive as well."
