A word from Izakaya Den
Izakaya Den is Denver’s popular Japanese gastropub, modeled after the lively after hours establishments found throughout Japan. The restaurant is located on South Pearl Street and is the second restaurant of the Kizaki brothers, founders and owners of Sushi Den.

The menu is arranged in a tapas style, serving traditional Japanese small plates along with dishes infused with international flavors and textures. The more traditional Japanese offerings include sashimi and nigiri, sourced from daily fish shipments from around the globe, along with dumplings and noodle dishes. The global cuisine experiments with a bevy of different flavors including unique items such as Grilled Panzanella Salad (jumbo lump crab, toasted focaccia, local goat cheese, pistachios, plum wine vinaigrette), Kobe Beef Sliders (seared foie gras, pomme frittes). A gluten-free menu is also available along with a popular weekday happy hour from 5 to 6:30 pm.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Izakaya Den never disappoints! We went with a group of 9 and it was a blast! I recommend the top floor bar."

  • "Between Sushi Den and Izakaya Den its worth avoiding all other sushi in Denver and saving your craving for either of the two. One of the best meals I have had in months."

  • "We had a wonderful time at this exceptional restaurant. We shared many of the dishes and followed the recommendation of our server who knew what he was talking about. We were there for a business function that was made more enjoyable because of the food and ambiance. We were never rushed even though they were busy. I would definitely return again and again as long as the budget would allow the indulgence."

  • "Overall, it was a good dining experience, but nothing remarkable. The ambiance/ environment is very chic, open-air concept pretty cool. The hostess that was stationed at the front door seemed to be distracted and didn't really do anything other than tell us to go upstairs. the upstairs wait staff was thorough and attentive. The duck confitte apps were amazing. The sushi was fine, but not any better than what I can get at my local neighborhood sushi restaurant in Aurora. Seems more of a place to see and be seen. Prices were inflated, accordingly."

  • "Been to Sushi Den many times but never tried Izakaya Den. After seeing many posts of Japanese food on instagram from my friends visiting Japan, I HAD TO try the chirashi - sashimi over a bowl of warm sushi rice. We made reservations a few days before, so we were able to get seated right away, which is nice. The food was excellent, as expected, but I was a little disappointed with our server, which was unexpected. My order came with soup & salad, but he didn't bring them until I asked. My husband asked for a substitution but the order didn't come out with the requested substitute. He did correct that without charging the substitution fee. And we never got the edamame that we ordered, but it wasn't on the bill, so no big deal."

  • "This is the second time it has taken nearly 10mins to have a waiter come to the table after being seated by a disorganized group at the host/hostess station (sometimes with attitude). Seaweed salads ordered both times were forgotten both times, some food comes from sushi den and takes >20mins to arrive. Good food, great ambiance but an exercise in frustration."

  • "The food at Izakaya is great, both sushi and other type dishes are nicely prepared, tasty and fresh. However, the service was just okay and not worthy of the preparation and food quality. If you don't mind mediocre service then go for it. The interior design of the space is very attractive, noise level was a bit loud for our liking, was hard to hear each other at times, but it is a trendy hot spot so that does come with the territory I guess."

  • "Could not have had a more pleasant experience. The restaurant is beautiful. It was very mood setting. The service was slow so go with good company and enough time; its meant to be relaxing so don't go in expecting the usual service. It allows you time to really catch up with a loved one!"

  • "we spent our 6 year wedding anniversary there last Saturday. Our server (whose name I cannot remember) was so polite, helpful and sweet. Loved her, the new location (although loved that other building too!) and the food, as always."

  • "Not only was the food great, but the wait staff was wonderful as well."

  • "Once again, Izakaya impresses us. It is not only our "go to" for sushi, it is our go to when we have to meet up with business colleagues or friends."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "We have been eating at Izakaya for years and the sushi is always good. The best! Also the service and atmosphere are wonderful. If you are looking for sushi in Denver, don't go anywhere else! The food is fresh and presented beautifully. Highly recommend!"

  • "Went AGAIN to their new location. As good as neighbor but less formal, takes reservations and more innovative restaurant. Sushi Den always good but this is friendlier and more unique choices."

  • "Food was amazing and very reasonable prices, very intriguing menu will have me coming back to try new things. Upstairs is rather large and open, unfortunately made it a bit loud for a table for two. Will be returning."

  • "Izakaya Den is an incredibly well conceived, designed and executed restaurants. The menu and food are both great with lots of interesting sake choices as well. But the star is the room - the interior designer should be commended. "

  • "New location is stunning, main floor is crowded and awkward. Upstairs is so much better it might as well be a different restaurant. The food was lackluster. Of course the sashimi was good, but the rest was so overpriced. Lamb carpaccio was maybe .2oz total for $18. there was literally not enough food to taste the texture and flavor of the poorly executed dish. The service was well executed, bussing, table maintenance etc was exemplary, our server however was clearly "over it" for the night and completely ruined the experience single handedly. Stop calling things Kobe there's no Kobe. in USA both the Wagyu slider & Foie and NY were such low grades of wagyu that USDA choice would be better for half the $$$ I won't be eating there again."

  • "If I had to choose my favorite Denver restaurant (thank goodness I don't) I would have to select Izakaya Den for its consistently wonderful, fresh food and gorgeous atmosphere. "

  • "A group of girlfriends and I came to Izakaya den bc of the atmosphere and quality sushi. We actually like it over Sushi Den bc of those two things. However, the service needs some help. I ordered 2 rolls and 1 didn't come out until I asked about it for the second time and every one was already done eating. It's never comfortable to eat when everyone is done and ready to leave. We also had to look for our server several times and flag him down, as he wasn't coming by regularly. The service needs some major help. Other than that, we will continue to go here over Sushi Den. "

  • "Wonderful, fabulous, terrific food and ambience! The sushi and small plates were to die for and the atmosphere was very hip and beautiful. The only minor negative is that our waiter offered to bring out ice cream for my husband's birthday while we were looking at the dessert menu because "that's what they typically to for birthdays", but then we were charged $5 for the scoop (which we assumed was on the house!). Other than that, couldnt have been better!"

  • "Izakaya consistently delivers excellent food and service. The patio and upstairs with retractable roof is spectacular, a relaxing spot and completes the package. "

  • "They have an extensive selection of very good quality sake here. Also, since I didn't know this the first time I went, good sake is never served hot, nor does it taste like jet fuel. Good sake is more like the white wine world, with a lot of subtle flavors and wonderful smoothness. Yes I'm a convert, and I highly recommend you try it too. The food is also all delicious. You can't go wrong with anything you order, and I highly recommend the pork and kimchee. I know it doesn't sound exciting, but it's delicious, and I'm someone that never orders pork. The sushi is also delicious, and the seaweed salad is amazing."

  • "I took some friends from out of state visiting here in Denver. They were impressed with the ambiance, the sustainable materials used in the restaurant decor, the delicious food with gorgeous interiors and great service. I take all my out of town guests here to Izakaya Den and people often love it. "

  • "I had been here back when they first opened and they had amazing sashemi. I decided to bring my mom here for Mother's day since I hadn't been here for a while. They did run out of a few of their specials that I wanted to try out (but our res was also at 9pm, so it was understandable) We ended up getting the whitefish appetizer which was very good. The rolls were a little disappointing (for the price), except the scallops. The scallops were fresh and smooth. I ordered the strawberry shortcake for dessert, which not too many restaurants have, and I was very excited. They brought out a cake. A cake that was NOT strawberry shortcake, it was a wannabe Whole foods cake. I may be back later, but probably not in the near future."

  • "We arrived with reservations for two. We were seated in a back room with larger tables and no view. Fortunately our waiter was young and honest. We went not only to serve food but to also have sake, our favorite. We order sake and we're advised that the establishment doesn't allow sake bombs. As some previous patrons ruined it by letting it evolve to a frat house night on the town. We both ordered he lobster ramen with the seafood deluxe. My guest, a seafood lover truly enjoyed the seafood selection but the flavor and presentation were quite mediocre. To be owned by the same people who own sushi den, I was surprised to see how unorganized the menu is as well as the lackluster food. Yet the location is supreme, as well visual aesthetic. "

  • "So nice, bright, and open! Retractable roof is a great addition. Good, as always, was amazing! Sushi, ramen, small plates, drinks and sake.... Every time we go, it's always the same level of good. Consistency is key!"

  • "Izakaya Den was by far the most incredible Japanese food I've ever had in my life in one of the more beautiful restaurants I've visited. That says a lot, considering that I was a chef for 7.5 years, and am a Japanese food connoisseur. Their sashimi plates were delectable, and their plum infused hot sake was the best I've ever tasted. Forget money when you walk through the door. A feast we barely finished for my wife and I cost $115. Don't be interested in the price. Go an enjoy. We will be remembering that meal for a long time."

  • "Love this place every time we go!!! Sushi is always wonderful and the service is always great . You get what you pay for!!! We will always be loyal customers ."

  • "After moving Izakaya next to Sushi-den, the place became even better. A great two-level layout works great. You can find a quieter place on a first floor and you can be in a center of the crowd on second floor with a great bar. The food is great, very fresh fish - no surprise. As my Japanese friend said this is the best Japanese restaurant outside of japan."

  • "This time, it just wasn't up to par. I ordered the spicy tuna spring rolls...no jalapenos, no crunchy noodles...even the "spicy" dipping sauce...well, wasn't. I chalk it up to an off night. Nothing was bad...just not as good as usual."
    Dined on 5/1/2014
  • "Food and atmosphere were absolutely great. However, a few other things fell way short. We had a booth and the table was very unsteady and we were told it could not be repaired. You could not even lean on it for fear that your plates and drinks would slide off. Also, as hard as the waiter tried, he continually forgot to bring out the food items we ordered. We also had to ask twice to straighten out the dinner bill because it was all wrong. Otherwise, a good place. Maybe he just had a bad day. "

  • "Love sushi and had been to the old Izakaya Den many times. I miss the vibe of the old space, it was darker but felt more cozy. The new space is amazing, bright and airy on the second floor. With the new construction comes a new food and beverage menu, very inventive and both delicious. The new space is definitely more hipster than before and designed to suit that crowd. The new higher prices are more hipster as well. I will definitely be back, but only for special occasions and after getting my paycheck."

  • "We did not order, just told our waitress of a few preferences. We asked her to bring us what she thought was great. She did and indeed all that she brought was great. Not cheap but great."

  • "The new location is an architectural delight and my 22 year old daughter was very impressed by the detail as she has an artist's viewpoint. My daughter is a vegetarian so we ordered the miso eggplant and she had a few of the vege rolls and the house salad which she remarked that the dressing was very nice. We tried miso cod, and lobster dumplings. The miso eggplant was a great hit and we ordered another plate! It had great flavor. The cod was also very flavorful with a nice seared crusty exterior but may have been a touch overdone. The big mistake for me was the wagu sliders that were tragically well done which is never good in my book. Izakaya should stick to traditional dishes as the duck confit fritters were also a disappointment."

  • "The new restaurant interior design is amazing! Live bamboo plants, beautiful woodwork and lighting. Can't wait to experience the open air roof top deck this summer. Food and service are top of the line. Only negative is the noise level. It's hard to talk with others."
