A word from Izakaya Den
Izakaya Den is Denver’s popular Japanese gastropub, modeled after the lively after hours establishments found throughout Japan. The restaurant is located on South Pearl Street and is the second restaurant of the Kizaki brothers, founders and owners of Sushi Den.

The menu is arranged in a tapas style, serving traditional Japanese small plates along with dishes infused with international flavors and textures. The more traditional Japanese offerings include sashimi and nigiri, sourced from daily fish shipments from around the globe, along with dumplings and noodle dishes. The global cuisine experiments with a bevy of different flavors including unique items such as Grilled Panzanella Salad (jumbo lump crab, toasted focaccia, local goat cheese, pistachios, plum wine vinaigrette), Kobe Beef Sliders (seared foie gras, pomme frittes). A gluten-free menu is also available along with a popular weekday happy hour from 5 to 6:30 pm.

I love to eat. I love to pick out new and exciting drinks, learn about things I haven't tried before, and find my old favorite things safe and sound on the menu. Izakaya Den is by far my favorite restaurant. Every time I go there it feels like my birthday. It is upscale without being exclusive. It has the Sushi of Sushi Den (because they are literally connected by a kitchen), without the often "look at me!" clientele of Sushi Den. They have a huge variety of sake, probably the best selection in Denver. Everything comes tapas style so you can find enough food for two or for twenty, and the waitstaff are amazing every time. The interior design of the restaurant can't be rivaled - from sweeping metal beams and sliding glass walls, to warm wooden tables and modern but cozy chairs and stools. Seriously, you can't go wrong here - expect to pay above average for the best, but won't make your friends or family embarrassed. Why are you even still reading this boring review? Just go to Izakaya Den and have the best night of your week!

We were taken aback when the hostess told us that the booths were only for parties of 5 and "special tables of four" and were surprised to hear--after we were seated and had used the warm towels on the table--that Happy Hour only happens at the bar (not so happy). We had to flag down our waiter whenever we needed something and found his descriptions of the food unappetizing and unsettling. Appealing: "Flown in fresh daily." Unappetizing: "Alive until we prepare it for your table."

I had heard a lot about this place and its relationship with Sush Den and ultimately had a mixed experience. The food was good but nothing incredible. Many of the items were very over priced for what they were and other restaurants have better quality. The location and ambience were the best thing about this place!

The Izakaya Den is hand's down one of my fiance and I's favorite eateries not only in Denver, but worldwide. The sashimi is always fresh and buttery, the sushi rolls exquisite, the service top notch and ambiance always inviting and lively. Living in Colorado Springs, we try to reservations here as often as we can when we are in the Denver area - it's a gem that you WILL need reservations for on a Thursday night. Already looking forward to next time.

I came here a few months ago and the sushi and service was both superb. My husband and 2 friends came back here on Saturday night for dinner and it was a total 180. Service was OK, it was tough to get a hold of our server and he rarely checked on us - he would bypass our table several times to go to other tables. I ordered the sushi dinner plate and it was awful. The fish tasted as if it had been left out on the counter.

I'm always pleased with my dining experience at Izakaya. I live in the neighborhood and it's a great place to treat myself with great food. We chose to order a few small plates, and the timing of the delivery could have been better. Everything came all at once and it was a little overwhelming. We also sat in the front room, and it was almost too dark. The people next to us were using their phones as flashlights to read the menu. Overall though, a great night out.

Almost too many choices to even think about making a decision, but not to worry, as the services staff is right there to help you with the navigation. The small-plates concept is at its prime here, allowing you to experience a wide variety of taste sensation. And it's not just about the fish, as some incredible meat selections are offered as well. We will definitely be returning SOON!!

Overall, a positive dining experience. All the sashimi and sushi plates ordered were the stand outs the night. Other 'fusion" dishes were less successful, especially the lobster ravioli. Really boring and flavorless. The ramen broth was quite delicious although I'll return to Uncle for my ramen fix (oh those eggs at Uncle!). Our waitress was fantastic and we truly enjoyed her service. And, a common refrain of mine, why do restaurants feel the need to keep their lights so low? I'm glad I asked to be seated at a table under a light so we could actually see our food. Not sure if we'll return; we agreed since the fish was the best part of our meal, we'll book a table at Sushi Den in the future.

Went in with high expectations left greatly disappointed. Place has a nice vibe, attractive decor, friendly service but the food was not very good starting with the seasoned Edamame, (pretty hard to muck this but the seasoning was awful). Get Zengo's XO recipe ASAP guys. Sushi-tuna not very fresh and very fishy. Black Cod over cooked and bony. Lobster dumplings tough and over cooked like rubber. My dinner date agreed and we will not return for food.

While dining at Izakaya, they ran out of the wine wee were drinking and an item from then menu that we ordered. Instead of the waiter asking us what we may want instead, he took the liberty or ordering replacement wine and entree without consulting us first. Neither of his choices were what we would have requested and both were not very good. He was clearly too busy to handle the number of people he had in his area and I think we all suffered.

We had a good night! The restaurant was busy, but allowed me to add 2 other people to my reservation and did so with a smile. The food, well that was soooooooo good!! We had to order 2 of the 'special' tuna appetizers because the first round went down so fast. We ordered cold unfiltered sake, Red Dragon roll, Salmon roll, the Unagi special (very tender and moist) and I don't even usually eat Unagi. Overalll we really did enjoy ourselves. :)

We go here a few times a year...usually on date nights without our daughter. This time we went for our anniversary...so I was a little disappointed we were seated in between 2 couples with little kids....haha. We ordered sushi, with 2 apps edamame and some eggplant dish that was really tasty. Had 2 gimlets that were very good as well and got out of there for $160 with 20% tip...more than our average date night out which is why we don't go here all the time. If we had more funds to burn, we'd come here more often.

Have always gone to Sushi Den. Decided to try Izakaya. The service was so lacking. Ordered Lobster Ramen. Waiter didn't enter order. Asked for lemon slices...looked at the bill and was charged $.01. A penny. Waiter said he didn't know how to enter a misc. item. He so no problem of letting the invoice system charge us a penny. Have never experienced this. You would think the food would be the same as Sushi Den. Don't think so. Will never come back to Iz again. Service at Sushi Den is polished and more attentive. Water was never refilled. Didn't receive a pencil to file out sushi order. Ordered the $30.00 sushi deluxe. Very ordinary. At least we received the proverbial smile when given our check.

For sushi, I'll now ONLY go to Izakaya Den! We made a reservation with ease, something you can't do at Sushi Den. There was almost no wait here as well, though loads of people were waiting outside Sushi Den... With the same sushi menu, why wait for the sister restaurant when you could eat right away at, as our waiter called it, "Sushi Den's prettier sister."?

I've visited Izakaya on many occasions & always enjoyed. I'm hoping the disastrous visit detailed here was a fluke & nothing more. I invited two new prospective clients to an initial consultation with me over dinner & drinks hoping to secure their business. Seated at 6:00 pm we waited 35 min for a member of wait staff to acknowledge or speak to us. Not even a hello, let alone water or a beverage. They didn't actually come until after I notified the manager. From there 4 persons attended to us, not one person visited more than once. Each time someone would come they had no info about us or our orders. For this terrible impression on my guests the manager purchased only one small item of ours. Unacceptable all around. I'm very disappointed.

The restaurant is beautiful. But the noise level was so loud my friend and I could barely hear one another across the tiny table for two. The menu is very limited. We ordered sushi and a couple "entrées" to share. The entrées were very small, more like appetizers. Perhaps it was just what we ordered, but the crab cakes and the sushi both had a foul fishy aftertaste. I love seafood and have had an array of different varieties of sushi, but the food was horrible. I'm not a picky eater and I'm willing to try almost anything. I also do not like wasting food, but I could not force myself to take another bite even though I was still very hungry. Nor did I want to box it up and take it with me.
