A word from Izakaya Den
Izakaya Den is Denver’s popular Japanese gastropub, modeled after the lively after hours establishments found throughout Japan. The restaurant is located on South Pearl Street and is the second restaurant of the Kizaki brothers, founders and owners of Sushi Den.

The menu is arranged in a tapas style, serving traditional Japanese small plates along with dishes infused with international flavors and textures. The more traditional Japanese offerings include sashimi and nigiri, sourced from daily fish shipments from around the globe, along with dumplings and noodle dishes. The global cuisine experiments with a bevy of different flavors including unique items such as Grilled Panzanella Salad (jumbo lump crab, toasted focaccia, local goat cheese, pistachios, plum wine vinaigrette), Kobe Beef Sliders (seared foie gras, pomme frittes). A gluten-free menu is also available along with a popular weekday happy hour from 5 to 6:30 pm.

Have always gone to Sushi Den. Decided to try Izakaya. The service was so lacking. Ordered Lobster Ramen. Waiter didn't enter order. Asked for lemon slices...looked at the bill and was charged $.01. A penny. Waiter said he didn't know how to enter a misc. item. He so no problem of letting the invoice system charge us a penny. Have never experienced this. You would think the food would be the same as Sushi Den. Don't think so. Will never come back to Iz again. Service at Sushi Den is polished and more attentive. Water was never refilled. Didn't receive a pencil to file out sushi order. Ordered the $30.00 sushi deluxe. Very ordinary. At least we received the proverbial smile when given our check.

For sushi, I'll now ONLY go to Izakaya Den! We made a reservation with ease, something you can't do at Sushi Den. There was almost no wait here as well, though loads of people were waiting outside Sushi Den... With the same sushi menu, why wait for the sister restaurant when you could eat right away at, as our waiter called it, "Sushi Den's prettier sister."?

I've visited Izakaya on many occasions & always enjoyed. I'm hoping the disastrous visit detailed here was a fluke & nothing more. I invited two new prospective clients to an initial consultation with me over dinner & drinks hoping to secure their business. Seated at 6:00 pm we waited 35 min for a member of wait staff to acknowledge or speak to us. Not even a hello, let alone water or a beverage. They didn't actually come until after I notified the manager. From there 4 persons attended to us, not one person visited more than once. Each time someone would come they had no info about us or our orders. For this terrible impression on my guests the manager purchased only one small item of ours. Unacceptable all around. I'm very disappointed.

  • Beautiful place, horrible taste

The restaurant is beautiful. But the noise level was so loud my friend and I could barely hear one another across the tiny table for two. The menu is very limited. We ordered sushi and a couple "entrées" to share. The entrées were very small, more like appetizers. Perhaps it was just what we ordered, but the crab cakes and the sushi both had a foul fishy aftertaste. I love seafood and have had an array of different varieties of sushi, but the food was horrible. I'm not a picky eater and I'm willing to try almost anything. I also do not like wasting food, but I could not force myself to take another bite even though I was still very hungry. Nor did I want to box it up and take it with me.

The food was amazing! We have always loved eating at Izakaya Den and Sushi Den because the food is so delicious. This was out first time dining in the new space. It is gorgeous and reminds us of New York. Our table was in the upper dining room adjacent to patio. The weather was perfect so they had the windows open. Our server was exceptional. Everything made for a fabulous dining experience.

We had a wonderful time at this exceptional restaurant. We shared many of the dishes and followed the recommendation of our server who knew what he was talking about. We were there for a business function that was made more enjoyable because of the food and ambiance. We were never rushed even though they were busy. I would definitely return again and again as long as the budget would allow the indulgence.

Overall, it was a good dining experience, but nothing remarkable. The ambiance/ environment is very chic, open-air concept pretty cool. The hostess that was stationed at the front door seemed to be distracted and didn't really do anything other than tell us to go upstairs. the upstairs wait staff was thorough and attentive. The duck confitte apps were amazing. The sushi was fine, but not any better than what I can get at my local neighborhood sushi restaurant in Aurora. Seems more of a place to see and be seen. Prices were inflated, accordingly.

Been to Sushi Den many times but never tried Izakaya Den. After seeing many posts of Japanese food on instagram from my friends visiting Japan, I HAD TO try the chirashi - sashimi over a bowl of warm sushi rice. We made reservations a few days before, so we were able to get seated right away, which is nice. The food was excellent, as expected, but I was a little disappointed with our server, which was unexpected. My order came with soup & salad, but he didn't bring them until I asked. My husband asked for a substitution but the order didn't come out with the requested substitute. He did correct that without charging the substitution fee. And we never got the edamame that we ordered, but it wasn't on the bill, so no big deal.

This is the second time it has taken nearly 10mins to have a waiter come to the table after being seated by a disorganized group at the host/hostess station (sometimes with attitude). Seaweed salads ordered both times were forgotten both times, some food comes from sushi den and takes >20mins to arrive. Good food, great ambiance but an exercise in frustration.

We have been fans of Izakaya Den since they first opened, the food is fresh and inventive as are the seasonal cocktails. The new location next door to Sushi Den is a modern-Japanese fusion experience on all levels. The décor is intriguing, the food is still excellent as are the drinks. But the prices have gone up. The crowd is now more hipster and the super "beautiful people." If you're not wearing couture, you might not get in the door. This creates a bit of sadness in my heart. It's still unique, but I don't feel like it's part of my neighborhood anymore. The price of progress.

The food at Izakaya is great, both sushi and other type dishes are nicely prepared, tasty and fresh. However, the service was just okay and not worthy of the preparation and food quality. If you don't mind mediocre service then go for it. The interior design of the space is very attractive, noise level was a bit loud for our liking, was hard to hear each other at times, but it is a trendy hot spot so that does come with the territory I guess.

New location is stunning, main floor is crowded and awkward. Upstairs is so much better it might as well be a different restaurant. The food was lackluster. Of course the sashimi was good, but the rest was so overpriced. Lamb carpaccio was maybe .2oz total for $18. there was literally not enough food to taste the texture and flavor of the poorly executed dish. The service was well executed, bussing, table maintenance etc was exemplary, our server however was clearly "over it" for the night and completely ruined the experience single handedly. Stop calling things Kobe there's no Kobe. in USA both the Wagyu slider & Foie and NY were such low grades of wagyu that USDA choice would be better for half the $$$ I won't be eating there again.

A group of girlfriends and I came to Izakaya den bc of the atmosphere and quality sushi. We actually like it over Sushi Den bc of those two things. However, the service needs some help. I ordered 2 rolls and 1 didn't come out until I asked about it for the second time and every one was already done eating. It's never comfortable to eat when everyone is done and ready to leave. We also had to look for our server several times and flag him down, as he wasn't coming by regularly. The service needs some major help. Other than that, we will continue to go here over Sushi Den.

Wonderful, fabulous, terrific food and ambience! The sushi and small plates were to die for and the atmosphere was very hip and beautiful. The only minor negative is that our waiter offered to bring out ice cream for my husband's birthday while we were looking at the dessert menu because "that's what they typically to for birthdays", but then we were charged $5 for the scoop (which we assumed was on the house!). Other than that, couldnt have been better!

They have an extensive selection of very good quality sake here. Also, since I didn't know this the first time I went, good sake is never served hot, nor does it taste like jet fuel. Good sake is more like the white wine world, with a lot of subtle flavors and wonderful smoothness. Yes I'm a convert, and I highly recommend you try it too. The food is also all delicious. You can't go wrong with anything you order, and I highly recommend the pork and kimchee. I know it doesn't sound exciting, but it's delicious, and I'm someone that never orders pork. The sushi is also delicious, and the seaweed salad is amazing.

I had been here back when they first opened and they had amazing sashemi. I decided to bring my mom here for Mother's day since I hadn't been here for a while. They did run out of a few of their specials that I wanted to try out (but our res was also at 9pm, so it was understandable) We ended up getting the whitefish appetizer which was very good. The rolls were a little disappointing (for the price), except the scallops. The scallops were fresh and smooth. I ordered the strawberry shortcake for dessert, which not too many restaurants have, and I was very excited. They brought out a cake. A cake that was NOT strawberry shortcake, it was a wannabe Whole foods cake. I may be back later, but probably not in the near future.
