Diner Reviews
  • "Salmon House is in a nice enough location for Pacific Northwest seafood restaurant. The problem is my alder grilled King salmon, a signature dish no doubt, is over cooked. The accompanied white bean and kale salad, robust and rustic, does not work well with the salmon. My son's herb crusted halibut with burre blanc and mash is a success in both flavor and handling (not over cooked). The room, however, looks tired and dated. There is definately room for improvement for this fading gem!"

  • "My large family with young children were visiting from Chicago and my wife and I wanted to give them a PNW dining experience but needed to keep in mind we had young children with us. The restraurant was spacious and very accommodating towards little ones."

  • "Nice place but very expensive! I'm glad there are people who can still afford these prices and make it worthwhile for the Salmon House to stick around. This restaurant is only for our very special, out-of-town guests who want fresh seafood - a rare event for us. We can eat fresh seafood at home most any time with bigger portions and much [MUCH] less cost."

  • "Consistently very good. Seafood is accurately described i.e. Type of salmon, how it was raised, where, fresh vs frozen. Love the free parking."

  • "Always reliable excellent fresh seafood. Cannot beat the view- especially on a sunny day."

  • "Three of us ordered three different entrees and one appetizer. That allowed us to taste two types of salmon, halibut, clam strips and a prawn appetizer. The seafood was definitely fresh and prepared perfectly. The prawns were super fresh too. Two of the diners were from out of town and were impressed by the view and friendly service."

  • "Took a guest from the midwest, mostly to see the interior and the view. Didn't expect much of the food as it seems like a bit of a touristy place, but were very pleasantly surprised. Both King and Coho salmon dishes properly cooked, not overdone or overly seasoned, seafood stew was rich with good variety and quantity of ingredients. The NW sampler plate was an excellent choice for our visitor. Quantities were good though not huge which was fine with us. Service was prompt, courteous and informed. Prices are maybe a bit high but not bad and the experience, ambiance and view are worth it."

  • "I was in Seattle for a work-related training and someone at the training recommended this particular Ivar's location. WELL . . . I'm so glad we took his advice. The décor is awesome! The view? Couldn't be better! The food? Melt in your mouth salmon. Delicious halibut and even the dessert (which we got 'to go' and ate back in our rooms) was great! I would recommend this restaurant to ANYONE visiting Seattle!!"

  • "We were visiting UW Seattle and it was nice to go to a place within walking distance of our hotel but not be a "student hangout". Also, the view of downtown Seattle is tremendous."

  • "We really enjoyed our evening at Ivar's. The wait staff was very informed about the menu and helped us with selecting the perfect meal. Wonderful environment and very good meal. Would definitely go back there again on our next trip to Seattle."

  • "Ivar's Salmon House is located right on lake Union with views of Seattle and boat traffic going between lake Union and Lake Washington. There's an outdoor eating barge which is so much fun when it is sunny outside. The food is great and their brunch is out of this world! Oh what a great happy hour menu too."

  • "Food was great. Service was ok, would have like to seen our waiter more but never felt abandoned. Ordered a carmel tini which seemed like just Pineapple juice. Salmon, Halibut were very good and crab cakes-delish. Was a cloudy day but none the less the view of the city was great. Sure it is amazing on sunny days. Do not recomend the tarimisu as the only coffee flavor was beans that you could tell was left in the fridge for a while. The Hazelnut torte though was very tasty (got the sampler). Bread pudding is very good as well. Over all great experience but towards the end our waiter seemed to be gone a while and when you passed by servers they looked very unhappy as if you are in their way and don't even smile at you."

  • "The waiter pointed out the items on the sampler plate and characterized qualities of each, enhancing the dining experience. HIs wine suggestions were right on the money."

  • "This restaurant has the right ambiance and the right flavor. The smoke on the salmon is perfect. I have never been disappointed by the food or the service. Combine that with a view that can be spectacular and you have the right mix for special guests or someone special. At Christmas, I have been treated to the parade of lighted ships. Even without that, the view across the water is like crystal on many evenings. Even yesterday when it was pretty brisk and all summer long, there are always people either paddling around or running their small craft about. This is one place I keep coming back to when I have guests in town, more than any other in Seattle, for the view, the food and that special NW "feel"."

  • "Terrible service. We were a party of six. They served five appetizers and we asked twice for the sixth. They served four dinners, then one more came out wrong then one more. The last one served after everyone else was done. Never refilled water. Never asked if we wanted a second drink. Asked for corn muffins, never got. Worse service we have had in a very long time. Food was good. No vegetarian options but salad. Did not order dessert."

  • "Got the window table requested and it was ready when our party of three arrived. Our waiter was cordial and helpful - basically did a nice job. We were not hassled to leave before we were ready which was nice as it was a gathering of old friends who had not seen each other in a long time. BUT The crab Louis I ordered was vastly overpriced at $29.00 for what I was served. It had no flavor whatsoever and was a small salad with rock hard tomatoes and a tiny hard boiled egg, a few slices of cucumber and slice of red pepper. Ridiculous. I was overcharged $15.94 and had to make another trip to the restaurant to get that straightened out. The rolls and chocolate torte were excellent"

  • "We took our son and our two mothers out. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Only complaint is that the restaurant was very chilly. Both mothers left their coats on. The food was good, and at reasonable prices for what it was. Just a little out of our price range to come her more than every few years."

  • "We enjoyed sharing our northwest culture to out of town guests in your beautiful restaurant. However, we were a bit disappointed in how our dining experience was rushed. Our entrees arrived before two of our party had finished their soup. My salad arrived along with my entree. I was asked to delay our leaving so a birthday brulee could be brought to the table for the person in our party who was celebrating his big day. It was brought without any fanfare, just plunked down, and the server never even wished him a "happy birthday". For the price we paid per entree, the service was less than satisfactory. I love the concept of your restaurant, but I'm not sure I'll choose to return for a special occasion."

  • "One of the best meals we've had at Ivar's. It's usually very good, but everyone's meals were excellent. We were a group of 5 and all loved our meals and salads, and the desserts were fabulous. Everyone had halibut and salmon in different preparations and were all impressive"

  • "Great Seattle Restaurant to take Out-of-Town Guests for Views, Seattle history, yummy salmon with local flavor - a 1 of a Kind Restaurant!"

  • "A classic fish restaurant, renovated but with the same lovely view. Pros - The corn muffins have been revamped for the MUCH better...way less sweet but still very tasty - Salmon, salmon, salmon (did I mention salmon)...DELICIOUS!!! Same with the 10-oz steak. - Allergy was accommodated, even on a busy night. - Seated right on time - The view - Good service. - Good beer list - Nicely remodeled Cons - Honey butter, where are you? - Crab and shrimp Louie was disappointing. Usually, a big salad with oodles of fun things in it (because once you yum up the crab and shrimp, it's just a salad), but this was pretty blah. An egg, one ring of red pepper, maybe one other thing and that was it. Dinner is a little pricey but worth it for a splurge."

  • "Came with family from out of town, so what better ways to show off Seattle than the Salmon House? It's our "go to" place to eat for these occasions."

  • "When I book, I asked for a window seat. When I got seated it was not a window seat. I am wondering if I called the restaurant directly, if I would have gotten what I wanted. When I asked the wait staff about the window, I was told there wasn't one available even though there were empty tables. Not sure if I will work through open table in the future. The food if great. The view is the best in Seattle."

  • "Being born and raised here, I've been coming to Ivar's Salmon House since I was a little child. We love knowing that we can always depend on this restaurant for a delicious meal at a good price, and friendly service. This particular visit, we were enjoying the wonderful promotion of celebrating Ivar's 109th birthday! We look forward to this promotion every year and made sure to make early reservations to take advantage of it. As usual, we were not disappointed -- the salmon was moist and tender, just perfect! Whenever we have guests from out of town visiting, a dinner or brunch at the Salmon House is always part of the itinerary. Our area has a history rich in Native American culture and art -- this is a wonderful way to enjoy both."

  • "Our office went to Ivar's for their annual Ivar's birthday celebration and we had a delicious meal as well as wonderful (seriously, some of the best!) cake I've ever had. My halibut was really fabulous! Highly recommended!"

  • "March 18th was a family birthday celebration (eleven people). The restaurant was teeming with people, due to their anniversary special, but we were seated quickly. The food took a little longer than usual, but the waiter brought extra rolls and got the kids meal right away. The food was great and they didn't to rush us. The steaks were perfect, the seafood fresh and delicious and the desserts were wonderful. They have a half size dessert, called a taste, which is just right after the big meal. Our waiter was friendly, kept us notified of wait time and brought drink refills regularly. All in all, we had a lovely night in the middle of the madness. Good job, Ivar’s!"

  • "Ivar's view never disappoints. Its menu, however, seems to be edging towards the comfort food zone. The halibut was lackluster, though its 3 citrus sauce and accompaniments saved this dish. The seafood saute looked unappetizing -- tiny, colorless morsels in a white casserole -- and the flavors all blended together so that the scallops tasted the same as the salmon bites. Its accompaniments of mashed potatoes and plain green beans were, well, plain. We wish Ivar's would get back on track by focusing on turning out the best fish in town and embellishing them with updated (though not super trendy) sides."

  • "We had a wonderful lunch. The salmon was cook perfectly as usual. My favorite restaurant in Seattle. The staff always makes it fun and the food is incredible. We never have to wait when we make reservations online with Open table. Alway a table with a view. Parking is never a problem, they have a huge parking lot."

  • "Although we had a reservation we arrived early because we couldn't predict the traffic. I told the hostess that we were early and we were prepared to wait until our reservation time, however, we were seated about half an hour early. The restaurant was extremely busy and we had to wait a short while to receive wait service to order our food and drink. The drinks were promptly served and the time until our food arrived was not long considering the business of the restaurant. All four of us ordered different items and commented on how good our food tasted. Our waiter was very helpful and attentive during our visit. I would highly recommend Ivar's Salmon House."

  • "Ten family members for the Sunday brunch. It was a birthday party for the oldest. Perfect for a group as there is something for everyone including kids. No omlets this time which was disappointing, and no lox. But plenty to eat. Kids can be kids as the noise level is high, but not a problem."

  • "I found the quality of the food that day not as good as on previous occasions. In fact, I had a small intestinal problem shortly after. Some dishes we're left in warmer too long. Pancakes we're rubbery and cold. Would be nice to have a dish of Hollandaise sauce on side of eggs Benedict, which, too, we're rubbery. Will give it another chance, however. Server was excellent."

  • "Been a customer since school many years ago. This was a destination for many of my friends, mostly students, for special occasions. It's still a great place to go after all these years for birthdays, out-of-town guests, and for business clients. It has a great view, has a wonderful aroma of alder as you first walk in, and their staff is great. It's not quite the same as it used to be - miss the au-grautin potatoes, large chunk of slightly sweet corn bread, larger portions of salmon, and it was much more casual as I recall. But the quality is still there though not as rustic or serving more simple, home-cooked fare as before. That being said, all things change over time - perhaps for more formal preferences and palates. Still great."
