Diner Reviews
  • "I had been coming to Lava Java for many years, then a tree crashed down through your roof! I moved to another part of the island, but now I'm living in Kailua-Kona again, and was surprised to see that they offer more than rolls and coffee!! The evening meal I had with a friend was more than I expected. So happy to see the changes!"

  • "They definitely need a wine list to go with good food. Although they do permit diners to bring in their own and do not charge for corkage, it is inconvenient for travelers. Much was quiet and pleasant."

  • "A dead on look at the ocean (over Alii Drive), tablecloths, a sunset and bring your own wine! What more could you ask for? Very good food and they delivered."

  • "I am a regular here. We had a minor problem with one food item. Management fixed the problem cheerfully and quickly. Cannot ask for more. Highly recommended."

  • "We were very impressed with everything. A co-worker suggested this especially for the cinnamon rolls. They were amazing and service was amazing as well!! We made a reservation and put in the comment section to reserve cinnamon rolls as well. We were seated right away with an incredible view. Cinnamon rolls were brought to table within 2 minutes."

  • "In addition to a drop-dead ocean view, a lovely meal and live musical entertainment, we were thrilled to have a live-action whale lob-tailing as the sun set between the clouds. Never a dull evening dining at Lava Java!"

  • "We had two special occasion dinners here plus one lunch. We love the location. Servers are so friendly and helpful. The music at dinner and brunch is lovely. We appreciate that they will bring glasses for the wine you bring since they don't have wine there. It is just our favorite place when we visit Kailua-Kona."

  • "Great spot located in the heart of Kona. Good food, lively scene entertainment, overall a good choice."

  • "The fish was cooked way too long. The stuffed chicken had fishbones in it which means that the kitchen isnt really clean. If you go to the restroom you have to walk trough the kitchen. The kitchen has a big mess and looks very unclean. The server wasnt very interested in serving us. We will never go again."

  • "The restaurant is located across from the ocean and has a very nice view. There was musical entertainment playing background music. Our table was situated on sloped concrete and tilted noticeably to the left. The waitress was very pleasant; however she failed to check back with us. We ordered an appetizer and entrees, both took extremely long to come out of the kitchen, but tasted great once we got them. On the rare occasion that we spotted our waitress while waiting for the food, we couldn't get her attention to find out why things were taking so long. When she finally came back to us after we finished eating the main course, she was ready to give us the bill without asking us if we wanted desert, which we did."

  • "We've enjoyed a great brunch at the Lava Java Bistro during our stay in Kona. Reading recommendations for the Bistro and looking at it during our strolls thru town, it was clear that we needed to check this place out. It is a wise decision to have a booking for a table, works perfect via their Website, and we did't have to wait outside like all the others. The Service was alright, not outstanding but it served the purpose. The food was great although the healthy choice - egg omelettes filled with veggies - was soaked in oil so not so healthy after all. Try the fresh Juices and the waffles are great! Altogether it was the best breakfast we had in Kona!"

  • "on the main street with very very very little indoor dining. cars going by constantly ... okay, can deal with that but the band that was playing (could you call it a band) was poor. singer had monotone and the music(?) blared at diners."

  • "Nice ambience, fast service even if the restaurant was almost full . The Ahi Poke was simply GREAT! I have also the lamb and it was good too (maybe I would have preferred more rare)...The staff was kind and discrete. We brought our own Pinot Noir and they opened and give us 2 "warm" glasses ( perfect). It was a nice romantic dinner."

  • "The table was ready and waiting for us when we arrived. Would not recommend the pizza. Found the crust soggy & tough. The guitarist was way too loud and we had to talk over him. Not much variety in his music either. Would recommend he turn down the sound. It's fun to take visitors there as it's by the ocean as well as "people watching". Have to bring your own booze though."

  • "We have eaten here many times which we found very nice but the food has continued to get worse. I think it's time to find a new spot."

  • "The name doesn't do this restaurant justice as it serves some of the best meals on the island at a fairly reasonable price. They also serve some rather high end meals that one wouldn't expect here or at most other casual restaurants."

  • "Situated with an outstanding view of Kailua Bay, this restaurant was remarkably inconsistent. There were two in our party and few diners. My first entrée was dreadful. The fish was terribly overcooked and the scalloped potatoes it was paired with were "unavailable". I received greasy, very dark small French fries as a substitute. I returned the entrée and somewhat promptly received another. The replacement was very good, the fish was well prepared and accompanied by scalloped potatoes. We shared a mediocre crème brule. The first waitress had an attitude. The second waitress who assisted was terrific. Not sure what to make of this. Perhaps being there the day after Christmas was not a good idea."

  • "Amazing view especially when the surf is up due to wind.We also enjoyed the food .Had great fish dishes for dinner.Artistic presentations and excellent flavours. We also enjoyed bringing our own wine which was promptly uncorked and served to us with no corkage charge. Excellent value all round."

  • "Who knew that a coffee shop could make one of the best pizzas I've ever had. And I'm from Chicago! We had the vegetarian pizza with the macadameia nut pesto and it was absolutely outstanding. We had come there a previous day for lunch and thought the lunch was so good we knew we had to come back. It did not disappoint. Highly recommend going here whether you want just a couple coffee, dessert, lunch or dinner! You can BYO wine for dinner if desired."

  • "Although the service was quite good, I felt the food wasn't as good as usual this time around. I asked for Ono fish tacos and was brought Ahi. I don't eat Ahi....so while everyone else at my table ate, I waited and waited for my dinner. When it finally arrived the Ono in the tacos was dry and just one small clump of fish. Kind of disappointing especially since the fish of the evening was Ono."

  • "Probably not a place I'd have thought about for lunch because "Lava Java" sounds like just coffee--but they have a good selection of sandwiches and salads and a great view of Kailua Bay. We went on recommendation of a friend. Weekday lunchtime had live entertainment. We sat right next to the entertainer, but his music was not at all intrusive to our conversation. One of our party said hamburger was only so-so (bun was really dry); my caesar salad was fine. I'd probably go back."

  • "We like the early morning quiet of Lava java, before the World really wakes up: it's great fun to watch the street and ocean action here, though a little later there will be a soloist, accompanying himself on guitar, singing "Blackbird' or another lovely ballad, in an easy-going manner. The wait-staff are all attentive without being intrusive, the food well-prepared and presented nicely. It's a special way to celebrate the day!"

  • "We love our Sunday morning breakfasts watching the waves, the swimmers, the ocean-craft (as well as birds and pedestrians on Alii) and an ocassional road-race all while sipping great coffee and enjoying our breakfasts. The food is yummy; the service attentive, We're usually gone before the music starts, though once in a while we'll arrive later or linger longer to in order to hear the "Easy on the Ears" sounds of singer-guitarist Randy Ressler, Kona's own James Taylor."

  • "Had another outstanding dinner in Kona at Lava Javea. We love this place, great food, wonderful atmosphere, terrific service. How can you go wrong? And they send you a free birthday dinner offer if you sign up for their email. No liquor license so you head a few doors down to the ABC store and pick up your wine. They provide chilled wine glasses and an ice bucket, no charge!"
