We live in the neighborhood and have lots of choices to eat in the Portland Pearl district. We eat out 3x /week and probably eat at Isabels once every 7-10 days usually splitting a dinner(large portions) which is made of healthy ingredients combined commonly with a 'latino' flair! Breakfast here is great as well! Service is usually very good...but was just so-so the last time.

We weren't prepared for how casual this place was. Menus are full of a strange mix of dishes from different cuisines. Fusion! What we ordered was tasty, but presentation was very basic, and flavors wouldn't challenge many. Very casual. Good for kids.

It is inventive in the sense that they combine flavors from around the world, and it works. We started with the lettuce wraps. I'd prefer if the tofu had been baked, yet the sauces were very good. We shared several a la carte tacos and the udon bowl for dinner. We really liked everything, especially the carnitas taco.

Isabel Pearl looks rather ordinary in terms of the décor but the menu and food are consistently good. Seems to be a blend of South & Central American dishes/flavors, and always a yummy special.

We all enjoyed our food but an hour before our reservation, they called me because they didn't know that I had a reservation via Open Table. They said that it didn't show up on their computer. Luckly, they were able to accomate my large party. Thanks Isabel!

Isabel's is a lovely charming place. It has a chic industrial look and it's menu shows why it's the pearl of the pearl. Self sustaining, farm fresh, and delectable. There are plenty of options for even the pickiest eater. The carnitas are especially yummy. Save room for dessert. The coconut flan should be a part of your life.

We went to Isabel for a 40th Birthday breakfast...the food was great but the service was poor. The waitress had always a face as she was making us a favor to attend us. We thought to go there because the restaurant is small and we expected a good service instead. If you are planning something special don't go there. If you are hungry and want to eat something delicious stop there.

The recommended 'Buddha Bowl' was very disappointing. It was to have been a delicious coconut broth with vegetables and rice. It consisted of a watery milky base with pieces of carrot, celery and onion and rice. It tasted like hot water with a few vegetables in it and had very little flavor. Adding salt, pepper and hot sauce did little to improve it.

This place always seems to be packed for breakfast/brunch when we walk by. We decided to try it out for dinner since we live close and are new to the neighborhood. The food was good but the service was seriously lacking. It was obvious that they don't get many reservations: when we arrived we were ignored for a couple minutes, then told someone would be right with us, then pointed to a table. I had to tell the server I had a reservation to make sure we were checked in. The server paid the bare minimum attention to us and didn't crack a smile until halfway through our meal. When she cleared our dinner plates I had to tell her that we wanted dessert, she didn't ask. We will check out the breakfast and hope that it's a better experience.

My friend eats out in Portland a lot, so when I decided to take her to Isabel Pearl for her birthday - a place neither of us had been - I worried whether or not it would be good. No need to worry - we both enjoyed our food, lots! She had the 3-course meal with the salad, the grouper, and the flourless chocolate cake. I had the chicken soup (yum), the lettuce wraps (good) and the carnitas bowl. She loved her food, especially the salad (goat cheese and beets among other ingredients). I enjoyed my food but it was too much. I should have just had the soup and the carnitas bowl. The flourless cake was so good I took a piece home for my husband. We followed up with a trip to Portland Center Stage just down the street. Would go again.

Food was good and the place is great if you like to people watch. That is about it. Although we all enjoyed our food, none of us felt full after the meal. In fact we ended going to another place later. The service was really bad. Server ran into my wife and my friend when walking past the table without even saying sorry. We waited for menus, drinks, for the server to take our order, and for the food for much longer then needed. If they were really busy I understand but they were only half full. Once again the good was great even though it was small but you can't really enjoy it when you don't have utensils to eat it with. All in all we will not be going back and could not recommend this to other people.

My husband and I used a prepaid voucher. I had the Brazil bowl ($14): black beans and brown rice with mango and chicken, with a spicy salsa, a mild/sweet salsa, and a pair of small plantain patties. The bowl was tasty and the portion size good but I expected better for the price: Without the mango, a similar bowl can be purchased elsewhere for half as much. My husband had the Latin steak frites ($20), a flat-iron steak, a large pile of plantain fries, and a huge pile of kale and a bit of broccoli, with a bland sauce. He told me the steak was wonderful and the plantain fries were very good. The kale was under-steamed. The service was excellent; decent beer selection but only 4 taps. Ambience was utilitarian with tables fairly close together.

We enjoyed the varied menu with fish, meat, and vegan options. The drinks were great, the food was great, and the service was very good. Thanks for making my wife's group birthday dinner comfortable and a success. One thing to note, we had a fairly quiet environment for our dinner, but if the restaurant had been packed, it might have seemed harder to interact in a large group.

Great place to meet friends..right in the Pearl, easy for everyone to drop into. Food was great for all.....even the special people theat need to not be adventures in their food choices. Waitress was great, if she wasn't sure about something she found out what was in the item or if that liqour was available and even came back with what choices the bar or kitchen did have. Food was great, place was busy but the waitress made us feel like she was happy to have us as her customers ...not rushing us out.

I have been to Isabel's many times, and it's always the same story. I love their food, their drinks are yummy, but the service is never great. Our server was really nice but seemed a bit lost and couldn't answer some basic questions about the menu or offer non-alcoholic options for a "mocktail" for one of our party. When our food arrived, mine was not piping hot, but that didn't stop me from finishing every last morsel (the flat iron steak with greens and plantain fries). They did comp us a dessert for my friend's birthday and give us a free sample spicy margarita. This is why I keep coming back: the food is delicious, the lackluster service is always offset by nice surprises, and you can always get a table without a wait.

It was more boisterous than a Sports Bar in here and there was no regard for personal space from the other patrons. I was bumped by the same woman who did not excuse herself or apologize. How this more upperscale Hispanic influenced restaurant developed this type of patronage I'll never know. The food truthfully was "ok" at best. I was certainly expecting more (at least from my main entree. My soup (daily special of a Chipotle Salmon Chowder was pretty divine...however the Buddha Bowl was another story. I felt the flavors although sounding great on paper displayed flavors that were too muddled. The Painted Hills Steak was great, but that's about it. The noise gave me a headache and made me wish I had chosen an outside table.

I selected this restaurant on a recent trip to Portland based on reviews. I was very disappointed. The food was OK but quite run of the mill. It felt more like a lunch than a dinner venue. We ate carnitas on fried plantain for appetizer which was the high point of the meal. The main courses were acceptable food but very ordinary and the supposed mix of cultures represented in the cuisine didn't work at all - nothing was unusual or unique enough to make it good. It just felt like they were trying to keep two different audiences sort of happy. I won't return.
