SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (December 14, 2000) –OpenTable, Inc., the online restaurant reservation network, today announced programs to enable holiday diners throughout the US to help feed the hungry. Beginning today until December 31, 2000, for every dining reservation made online at any of OpenTable’s 1,100 + restaurants across the country, the company will donate a full meal on behalf of the diner to a hunger-fighting organization.
This holiday season, OpenTable is working with America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization; New York’s City Harvest, America’s oldest food rescue program; and San Francisco’s Glide Memorial Church, which has been feeding the Bay Area needy since 1969. Online reservations made in OpenTable’s New York restaurants will benefit City Harvest, while Glide Memorial Church will benefit from reservations made at Bay Area establishments. Reservations made on the site in restaurants in OpenTable’s 21 other markets will result in donations to America’s Second Harvest.
OpenTable’s charitable partnerships give people a unique way to give back to the community while celebrating the holidays in some of the nation’s most celebrated restaurants. OpenTable enables consumers, hotel concierges and administrative assistants to easily search for restaurant availability by cuisine, price range and neighborhood; and make and confirm reservations in real time, twenty-four hours a day. And for the rest of this year, it will also enable them to feed someone less fortunate every time they make a reservation to dine out.
“OpenTable is committed to giving back to the communities in which we do business,” said Jeff Edwards, the company’s CEO. “We are proud to be affiliated with organizations that fight hunger all year long and are delighted to contribute to their efforts this holiday season.”
About Glide Memorial’s Free Meals Program
Glide’s Free Meals Program is the only program in San Francisco that serves three nutritious meals every day to the poor, homeless and hungry. Begun in 1969 Glide’s Food and Meals Program today serves as many as 3,500 meals a day and averages more than one million meals every year. Operating with a paid staff of only 16, the program could not survive without the energy and commitment of thousands of volunteers, and the stream of food and supplies donated by corporations, restaurants, hotels, individuals and foodservice suppliers.
About City Harvest
Founded in 1982, City Harvest is America’s largest and oldest food rescue program. Every day, City Harvest delivers an average of 34,000 pounds of food that would otherwise go to waste — about
12.5 million pounds last year — to food pantries, soup kitchens, day care and senior centers, homeless shelters and charitable organizations serving low-income families and individuals in New York’s five boroughs. Its Hunger Hotline connects thousands of callers each month to emergency food in their neighborhoods.
About America’s Second Harvest
America's Second Harvest is the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization with a network of more than 200 food bank and food rescue programs. The organization distributes more than one billion pounds of donated food and grocery product annually, and supports approximately 50,000 local charitable agencies that operate more than 94,000 food programs, including food pantries, soup kitchens, women's shelters, Kids Cafes, and other local organizations that provide food assistance to more than 26 million hungry Americans, including eight million children and four million seniors each year.
