OpenTable Has No Reservations About Expanding Here

October 5, 2007
San Francisco technology company OpenTable Inc. is targeting the Queen City for growth as more restaurants sign up to use its online reservation services.

Over the past year, the company has seen dramatic growth in its client base in Charlotte. GW Fins, Brazas Bar & Grill and Omaha Steakhouse have signed up for the service in recent weeks, bringing the number of local restaurants on the list to 49.

"Charlotte is a relatively new market for OpenTable to be in," says Ann Shepherd, OpenTable spokeswoman. "We are seeing tremendous growth and enthusiasm from the restaurant base and from the consumer base."

Local clients include Alex Myrick's Blue, Tom Sasser's M5, Jim Noble's Rooster's Wood-Fired Kitchen and national chain's such as Ruth's Chris Steak House and McCormick & Schmick's Seafood.

Greg McIntosh of McIntosh's Steak House also uses OpenTable to manage his reservations and handle his e-mail marketing.

"We used to look at all of North Carolina together, but we just broke Charlotte apart," Shepherd says. "In May, we had just 18 restaurants in the greater Charlotte area, and now we have almost 50."

Restaurants pay an average of $1,200 to have the computer system and software installed. There is a $200 monthly service fee for 24-hour support. The restaurant also pays $1 for every reservation booked through the OpenTable Web site and 25 cents per reservation booked from the restaurant's Web site.

Through OpenTable, restaurants keep a reservation book online instead of on paper. The restaurant can book reservations itself, or customers can schedule them online through OpenTable. The system also allows customers to note seating preferences and dietary restrictions.

OpenTable was launched in 1999. About 7,500 restaurants across the country and internationally use its online reservation system. OpenTable says its system fills more than 2 million seats at restaurants each month. Shepherd declines to disclose company financial information.
