Make reservations in a snap with a click onto dining site

January 27, 2006
In other major metropolitan areas, the OpenTable online reservation system is a way of life. Diners routinely employ the service to book lunch and dinner reservations at restaurants without a second thought. Though the service was launched two years ago in the Cleveland market, it only recently began to take off in earnest. That upsurge is due in large part to Ryan Nash, OpenTable's first Cleveland-based account executive.

Q: How many participating restaurants are there?

A: As of today, there are 33 in Cleveland and 4,000 nationwide. That number is growing by 200 restaurants every month.

Q: How does OpenTable work?

A: A diner goes to the OpenTable Web site -- www.opentable.com -- and plugs in the preferred date and time of the reservation and the size of the party. The system searches for all available tables at member restaurants and lists them in five seconds. The diner selects the restaurant they want and books the table on the spot.

Q: Does the diner have to call the restaurant to confirm?

A: No. The service connects directly into the restaurant's own reservation system in real time. When you enter a reservation into OpenTable, it is automatically entered into the restaurant's reservation book.

Q: What does it cost to use?

A: It's completely free for diners. Restaurants pay an upfront fee for installation, a monthly subscription fee, and a small per-transaction fee.

Q: Why is this better than just picking up the phone?

A: For one thing, you have real-time 24-hour access to a restaurant's reservation system. Many restaurants don't open until later in the day. And if you leave a message, you have to wait until someone gets back to you to confirm.

Q: What if I have a special request?

A: Anything you can do over the phone, you can do through OpenTable. You can request a window seat, pre-order a bottle of champagne, or tell them it's someone's birthday.

Q: Is there more to it than just eliminating a telephone call?

A: Yes. The service is a great tool for deciding where to eat in the first place. Diners can search by neighborhood, cuisine and price point. There are links to the restaurants' Web sites and menus, as well as maps and driving directions. Plus, there are diner incentives.

Q: Did you say, "incentives" ?

A: Yeah, a diner accumulates 100 points for every online reservation they honor. Every 1,000 points earns the diner a $10 dining check good at any restaurant.
