  • "the food always great but the service just so so !!!"

  • "This was the second time I'd been to India House for the lunch buffet since they opened after the-awaited renovations were completed. As always, the lunch buffet choices did not disappoint. One of the things I always appreciate about India House is that they are not afraid to spice some of the items at the buffet at the 'medium' level, which means I don't have to order a la carte if I am in the mood for extra heat. Of course, the majority of food is mild to medium to appeal to most palettes, but this is undoubtedly one of the reason this establishment is so popular with my Indian friend and me."

  • "A very nice menu with many dishes not found in other Chicago Indian places and some seasoned quite wll, that is hot, not toned down. I had the lamb chops, burned mouth but worth every tear. My wife had the mixed grill, good but some of the chicken a bit dried out. So given the few choices in the area, India House should be on the top of list."

  • "My s.o. and I enjoyed a visit to this establishment in mid March 2014. This was by far our favorite place in Chicago. We left stuffed, but wished we didn't eat that day so we could have had more! We had an awesome server who was able to recommend dinner choices and wine pairings as well. Great looking place and worth the price. Enjoy this excellent dinning experience, I believe they offer buffet at lunch, but not dinner."

  • "Took a friend to India House for a birthday lunch. I had not been to the restaurant before. The buffet had a huge selection of dishes to try. I was surprised to find a sizzling dish of chicken at our table when we returned from the buffet. The food was very good. Some spicy dishes. I will go back."

  • "Server rushed through order, brought a few wrong dishes, water always waiting to be refilled. I know it was a busy Friday night, but the ambiance had an overall chaotic feel, the service inattentive and distracted. Good thing the food surpasses all- excellent and mouth-watering Indian cuisine!"

  • "Previously dined here before the remodel. Modern design. Food still delicious. Does not disappoint. Dinner is pricey but entrees include soup, dal, rice and naan, so worth it. Huge menu can be daunting for new diners."

  • "We very much enjoyed the quality of the food and the friendly server."

  • "Everything we ordered here was outstanding. They start you off with complimentary little bread strips and a very tasty dipping sauce. The chai was rich and perfectly spiced. The dahi aloo poori was complex and fascinating. That was a new dish to me and it was a wonderful mix of different flavors. The least standout dish was the hyderabadi curry, and that was still delicious and unique, as I had never had anything quite like it before. The bread was brought to us immediately after it came off the oven and was hot, rich and buttery. The absolute star of the evening was the palak paneer. I have never had palak that fresh and flavorful. I highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to trying more things on their menu."

  • "Everything was great, wished there was saag and chana on the buffet. The meat eaters seemed happy. All the items were fresh and not over cooked. Excellent service as well. Will definitely go back for team lunches - everyone was full!"

  • "I had a great dinner at India House last week. The chicken tikka and tandoori mixed grill were both delicious. I was impressed by the wine list. It may initially look like India House is a little pricier than some other Indian restaurants, but rice and naan are included with each entrée, making the prices the same as the spots I like on Devon Street. They recently renovated and the restaurant is beautiful. It fits in with the other trendy restaurants in River North. I would definitely go on a date there or go with colleagues."

  • "Pricey but best Indian food downtown Chicago. Lunch buffet is really good!"

  • "This place is not cheap, but it serves amazing food, and the free naan takes a bit of the sting out. Portions are generous - my paneer makhani had more chunks of paneer than I've gotten at any other Indian restaurant."

  • "The food is still great, but I'm not a big fan of the new decor. Reminds me of a hotel restaurant, and I hate that they added a big screen TV (is it so hard for Chicago diners to go out for a meal and NOT have to watch a game??). Also, the mango lassi is way overpriced at $5+ and not the freshest that I've had."

  • "This was our first visit since the renovation was completed. The decor is much more elegant now and the entire space is less cluttered. We sat in the front of the house and could not see the whole room, but it looks like all the booths have been removed. India House is a good choice for our family of four because of the diversity of options on the menu. The tandoori grill was excellent - as is everything that comes out of the tandoori pots. Others in our group are much more interested in the sauced dishes like the vindaloos. Our daughter was happy with the vegan choices and settled on a soup and a korma. We also liked the new naan wedges and cream sauce as a bread course. My only mild complaint is that the servers struggle with English."

  • "Excellent!!! Will now be a regular!!! Great evening with friends who had already discovered India House and were too glad to join us there again..."

  • "A large selection of dishes to accomadate taste...we ate vegetarian dishes, spinach and eggplant, which burst with many flavors to make your pallet dance. The naan was equally a nice companion with fluffy tempered rice."

  • "We went for the weekend buffet and the food was great and included salads, main dishes and desserts. They also bring out tandoori chicken and naan when you first come in. There's a pretty good selection and the server was friendly and attentive."

  • "I was greeted by very friendly servers, the food was delicious and restaurant was clean with a romantic feel. Great for a date! Food is a bit overpriced for Indian cuisine, but other than that, pleasant experience!"

  • "The variety of Indian food was excellent. Service was better than I expected at an Indian restaurant. The recommendation of the Khafia chicken was great. Would recommend to friends. The butter chicken and Naan were excellent. Other Indians in the restaurant so this is not just a westernized Indian place."

  • "We had excellent lamb kabob, dal and raita. The lamb was succulent. They have redesigned the space so it seems more welcoming and comfortable."

  • "There is no need to trek up to Devon Ave. with the India House right here in Near North. The food is great, service is friendly and the new renovation looks fantastic. I didn't know about the renovation so it was an added bonus. I would recommend this restaurant to any fan of Indian food."

  • "The service was extremely slow - it took over 45mins to get our food and the restaurant was not busy. When we did get our food one of our dishes was missing, but we didn't ask for it since we did not want to wait another 20 mins (or longer) for it to arrive. When I got the bill I noticed that we were charged. When I told the waiter he checked my take-over bag as if I was not telling the truth and secretly taking the dish home. He even asked me if I was sure that we didn't receive it - really! They did take it off in the end but I did not appreciate the fact that he thought I was not telling the truth. We have been going here for years. The food is excellent but the service is always less than ideal."

  • "I went here for the first time because it was close to the hotel of a friend and we wanted Indian or other ethnic food. The food did not disappoint... Everything was excellent. Unfortunately, our waitress's barely spoke English, was hardly audible, even when standing right next to us, and didn't seem to know how to provide service to our table. She ignored us for 20 minutes, then after taking our order, pretty much ignored us until the dishes were clear. I'd definitely go back for the food, but would hope to get a different server. One small note, we were seated at a tiny table, up against a wall, while other pairs were seated in more comfortable booths or larger, more suitable tables. Next time I'd also ask for a different table."

  • "For a long time, India House was one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Chicago. Their buffet was a great value because they had a wide array of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian selections. But then the restaurant closed for renovation -- for quite a long time. Last Friday, I returned to India House for the first time since they re-opened and I was pleased with some of the changes, including a less open, and therefore less noisy, floor plan. The best thing, however, is that the buffet remains outstanding, both in terms of selection and value. While many Indian restaurants turn down the heat to accommodate lowest common denominator food preferences, India House leaves a bit of kick in their dishes, and this is appreciated."

  • "India House never disappoints with their food. Service is fine. It was our first visit since they have remodeled and changed their menu slightly. Was kind of surprised at how expensive their dishes are now. Still first rate Indian food -- but pretty pricey!"

  • "As someone who grew up in an Indian-American household, I am pretty tough when it comes to rating Indian restaurants. With that being said, this place was pretty good -- the only part of my meal I was disappointed in was the appetizer -- the India House special. The sauce was not spicy at all (but then again I have a very high tolerance for spice) and the spice tasted it was like it was poured over the meat and then served, as opposed to being cooked into the meat. so if you ate a piece of meat by itself, it tasted just like meat and you didn't taste the sauce at all. The lamb vindaloo was very good and the Kadhai chicken was just ok, but my friend seemed to really like it. Masala tea and deserts were good. Waiter was very nice."

  • "I hosted several out of town guests for dinner recently. I knew they enjoyed trying different types of cuisine I choose India house. They all loved the food. The portions are way too big so they had left overs for their hotel room midnight snack. I wa very pleased with the food and service"

  • "First time since remodeling was completed and was pleasantly surprised with the upgrade in the look including small chandeliers and tufted seat backs/walls in the booths. The food was all delicious - the four of us shared each others' entrees which had a variety from goat, lamb, chicken and a sampler, and we all had plenty to take home."

  • "This was the perfect place to go before The Jungle Book down the street. Food and service were fine overall. But the prices had been upped considerably after a redecoration project, from what I remember having eaten there 5 years or so ago. This was by far the most expensive non-haute cuisine Indian I've ever had. And the waiter neglected to mention that a tip had been added to the bill. We had to call back the next day to get this adjusted."
