A word from Inakaya
Our original restaurant in Japan was established and opened its first door in the heart of Roppongi, Tokyo in 1970, as the traditional "Robata-yaki" restaurant. Since then, Inakaya has been loved by substantial numbers of distinguished personalities, comprising of former President of the United States, Hollywood stars, and other celebrities and the epicureans from around the world for more than 30 years. "Robata" is the Japanese term that stands for "around a sunken hearth" and "yaki" means "grilling". Families used to gather around the hearth for dinner, which evolved into "Robata-yaki" style. It is known as a type of traditional cuisine, which features fresh ingredients grilled in proximity of guests' own eyes. Foods are cooked on open-flame, its ancient but healthy grilling method of dropping excess oil has attained its popularity, and has spread throughout Japan. And now it comes to New York!
Please note this online reservation is for the Robata counter seating.

Had a 6:30 reservation and were promptly seated at the counter. Very entertaining place to sit and watch the fish be fried and sushi made. Sushi was good and fresh. Would recommend for the area.

Dining at Inakaya is an amazing experience. The restaurant flows beautifully from the sushi bar out through the open dining area to the floor to ceiling windows creating a relaxing environment to eat while still capturing the excitement and energy from the rest of the diners. It seems as if every server is working every table so the service was overly attentive in a non-intrusive way. We ordered the Omakase Nigiri Sushi & Sashimi ($70 pp) and the selection, preparation and presentation were dreamy. All the staff greets every diner as they enter the door shouting irasshaimase (歓迎) + there was a super fun ritual with the rice and mallets and anyone who wanted to participate could. Best dining experience in awhile.

Like prior reviews have noted, the place is pretty noisy, largely because of the high ceilings and surfaces but especially because the staff all call out in unison a welcome when people arrive, a 'thank you for waiting' when food is served, and the like. it was initially distracting, but then seemed to suit the environment. Food was excellent. We had grilled squid, grilled black cod and also 3 types of mushrooms. it is very easy to overcook squid or fish, but these were done perfectly with strong but balanced seasoning. The mushrooms were a little overwhelmed by the broth, but tasty, and the broth was lovely over rice. Sashimi was firm and fresh, excellent quality. We enjoyed having a view of the grill and sushi chefs.

Found this place on a whim. It is a little overwhelming when they welcome you loudly upon entrance, burt service was great and better yet food is amazing. Yellowtail belly of the appetizer trio was outstanding as was the giant shrimp on robata grill. Will definitely go back. Great place yto eat before a show.

The chorus of 'hello' (in Japanese) that greets every diner takes some getting used to (it's loud!) but the food is excellent and the service very good. And if the spotlight is on you - it was the 30th birthday of one of our guests - the brilliance of the 'happy birthday' moment was worth it all.

This restaurant is frustrating and far too touristy for business lunches. I had lunch there once and will not be going back. The food was of high quality. The service was attentive. But there was a lot of gratuitous shouting by the servers, the chefs and even the host, which is apparently part of the program at this place. The noise, which occurred at frighteningly regular intervals, made it hard to hear my business colleague and hard for him to hear me. Very frustrating. Too much shouting.

The service was very good. The sushi rolls were fresh, tofu salad, and the spicy tuna on top of crispy rice was amazing. The kids also enjoyed the sushi as well as the chicken skewers. This was a rare find in which kids were as welcome as anyone else, while still maintaining a nice ambience and overall experience. The noise level was high enough that we didn't have to keep "shushing" the kids...and the food was excellent. The wine list could definitely use improvement -- the selection was not only minimal, but also low quality.

From the moment you arrive, the entire staff is loudly screaming what I can only guess as "welcome" or "thank you" in Japanese. The entire nite we just wanted them all to stop yelling. Food & service was good enough but all that yelling would guarantee me not to go back. My ears are still ringing.

Note, this is a great place for sushi; however, it is a wonderful place for robata (Japanese grilled food on a stick). Note, Open Table reservations are for the bar/counter area, not for table service--and service can be slow, so it loses a star for those factors. But great if you're seeking something different near PABT/Times Square/Theater District.

We came to celebrate our wedding aniversary. And boy, was it a good choice! The quality of the food amazed us. Super fresh fish, deliciously prepared and presented beautifully. Just to try something different we also had the pork belly in special broth. Wonderful! The staff was friendly, fast and attentive. They even were so thoughtful to sing a Japanese celebration song for our anniversary and gave us a free desert. All in all a wonderful experience. We will certainly go here again when in New York!

I found Inakaya during New York Restaurant week. This place has a great vibe. The centerpiece is the open kitchen where you can see the chefs do their thing. You can also sit around the kitchen which is good for singles. The staff greet you with shouting in Japanese. The food was exceptional. I had sashimi. The quality of the fish was A1. Then Miso Codfish with baked rice ball. The fish melted in my mouth and the accompanying asparagus and mushroom had a nice crunch. Finished with green tea and black sesame ice cream. Always a good way to end. I also had matched sake which complimented the dishes. I highly recommend this exciting and enjoyable dinning experience.

$30-ish for a sashimi lunch with soup or salad (not both) is pretty steep, but the quality is excellent. We also got the tuna sashimi selection for $32, and was likewise first rate, but it only included 5 pieces. They do the shouted greetings and goodbyes whenever someone enters or leaves like the do in Japan, and that is kind of fun, and adds to the energetic vibe in the place. Lots of NYC sushi restaurants are like mausoleums.

I've been to Inakaya three times with different people, and we've all loved it every time. In some ways, it resembles a Japanese tapas place--quite different from, and to my mind much more intersting than, a traditional Japanese restaurant, though it does have sushi and sashimi for those who like that. The service is friendly and the place is lively without being too noisy to conduct a conversation. It's convenient to theater or movies in the Times Square area, but note that, though it has an Eighth Avenue address, it is actually located midway between Seventh and Eighth on 40th.

We went on June 4, 2014 for dinner, however, the waitress was so rude and unreasonable! We went for a BUSINESS dinner, and booked for a table for 12ppl (I booked via opentable and called to cfm the seats for a big group to sit together after making reservation in the afternoon), but when we arrived she asked us to sit in two different tables, and then she was being UNREASONABLE and VERY RUDE the whole evening! Worse waitress we have ever had! This was not our first time there for business dinner/lunch and certainly not the first time we went as a big group, however, first time ever to be asked to sit in different tables. We were very disappointed the way Inakaya treat their customers.
