A word from Inakaya
Our original restaurant in Japan was established and opened its first door in the heart of Roppongi, Tokyo in 1970, as the traditional "Robata-yaki" restaurant. Since then, Inakaya has been loved by substantial numbers of distinguished personalities, comprising of former President of the United States, Hollywood stars, and other celebrities and the epicureans from around the world for more than 30 years. "Robata" is the Japanese term that stands for "around a sunken hearth" and "yaki" means "grilling". Families used to gather around the hearth for dinner, which evolved into "Robata-yaki" style. It is known as a type of traditional cuisine, which features fresh ingredients grilled in proximity of guests' own eyes. Foods are cooked on open-flame, its ancient but healthy grilling method of dropping excess oil has attained its popularity, and has spread throughout Japan. And now it comes to New York!
Please note this online reservation is for the Robata counter seating.

Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I discovered Inakaya 2 months ago and made a reservation for our 16th wedding anniversary dinner. Once again the food, service and ambiance were excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and experience. We will definitely return!!"

  • "We came here in restaurant weeks. The sashimi there was soooooo fresh and delicious. Also, the green tea ice cream was amazing. I love it!"

  • "Food was great. I guess that is all that matters."

  • "Note, this is a great place for sushi; however, it is a wonderful place for robata (Japanese grilled food on a stick). Note, Open Table reservations are for the bar/counter area, not for table service--and service can be slow, so it loses a star for those factors. But great if you're seeking something different near PABT/Times Square/Theater District."

  • "We came to celebrate our wedding aniversary. And boy, was it a good choice! The quality of the food amazed us. Super fresh fish, deliciously prepared and presented beautifully. Just to try something different we also had the pork belly in special broth. Wonderful! The staff was friendly, fast and attentive. They even were so thoughtful to sing a Japanese celebration song for our anniversary and gave us a free desert. All in all a wonderful experience. We will certainly go here again when in New York!"

  • "I found Inakaya during New York Restaurant week. This place has a great vibe. The centerpiece is the open kitchen where you can see the chefs do their thing. You can also sit around the kitchen which is good for singles. The staff greet you with shouting in Japanese. The food was exceptional. I had sashimi. The quality of the fish was A1. Then Miso Codfish with baked rice ball. The fish melted in my mouth and the accompanying asparagus and mushroom had a nice crunch. Finished with green tea and black sesame ice cream. Always a good way to end. I also had matched sake which complimented the dishes. I highly recommend this exciting and enjoyable dinning experience."

  • "I have been there for few time with my friends and we all liked it. However, this time, the food is not as fresh as before. We have tried prefixed menu-- sashimi and black cod fish. It is not fresh enough like before. Little disappointed at this time."

  • "$30-ish for a sashimi lunch with soup or salad (not both) is pretty steep, but the quality is excellent. We also got the tuna sashimi selection for $32, and was likewise first rate, but it only included 5 pieces. They do the shouted greetings and goodbyes whenever someone enters or leaves like the do in Japan, and that is kind of fun, and adds to the energetic vibe in the place. Lots of NYC sushi restaurants are like mausoleums."

  • "Nice open space and great staff add to a very nice dining experience - definitely get the Masu delivered to you on a paddle and the head on tail on shrimp were the largest I have ever seen - and quite yummy - the kobe skewers, however were a little underwhelming."

  • "A perfect enjoyable place to eat in the middle of gross hustle bustle times square for dinner before a broadway show."

  • "Inakaya had a fantastic atmosphere and equally fantastic food. The restaurant really tried (and succeeded) to make feel as if you were in Japan. The service was great, they were all very attentive. Large menu with lots of delicious options. Large sake list as well."

  • "It was wanderful to find that Manhatan had a Tepan House in the same traditional style I've seen in Japan. Good food, good service, good entertainment. I definitely recommend."

  • "I've been to Inakaya three times with different people, and we've all loved it every time. In some ways, it resembles a Japanese tapas place--quite different from, and to my mind much more intersting than, a traditional Japanese restaurant, though it does have sushi and sashimi for those who like that. The service is friendly and the place is lively without being too noisy to conduct a conversation. It's convenient to theater or movies in the Times Square area, but note that, though it has an Eighth Avenue address, it is actually located midway between Seventh and Eighth on 40th."

  • "I had made a reservation for lunch before taking my 10 year old nephew to see Newsie..in next block so booked for convenience and sushi is one of the few foods he loves. Never expected the fun greeting and atmosphere...great energy in the place! And it really entertained my nephew til show time. The sushi was like butter...melted in your mouth....will definitely go back!"

  • "I loved the experience! Dining as theatre. This is a true Japanese Robata, exactly as I was fortunate enough to experience, when I had the opportunity to work for a month in Tokyo. Very different than other Japanese restaurants, but don't worry. The sushi is great and the other dishes are as well. I went with my son and we had a great time."

  • "We went on June 4, 2014 for dinner, however, the waitress was so rude and unreasonable! We went for a BUSINESS dinner, and booked for a table for 12ppl (I booked via opentable and called to cfm the seats for a big group to sit together after making reservation in the afternoon), but when we arrived she asked us to sit in two different tables, and then she was being UNREASONABLE and VERY RUDE the whole evening! Worse waitress we have ever had! This was not our first time there for business dinner/lunch and certainly not the first time we went as a big group, however, first time ever to be asked to sit in different tables. We were very disappointed the way Inakaya treat their customers. "

  • "We just returned from a trip to Japan and while we were in the city we decided to go looking for food that was as close as we could get to having Japanese food again. We came across this establishment and upon walking in and hearing the Japanese greetings being called out when we entered was a welcome sign. The Robata area towards the back of the restaurant was exactly how a similar area in Japan would be set up as well. Even the facilities contained within the restaurant were true to a Japanese establishment. The food was prepared well and we enjoyed being able to take a slight trip down memory lane by eating here. • "I have met with business colleagues for lunch at Inakaya for over 5-7 years. The standard is always superior, service is excellent and quality of food is beyond words. Highly recommended for business meetings. I have invited overseas colleagues from the UK & Australia at this location and they all loved it. A classy and sophisticated choice."

  • "Tucked around the corner of 40th Street off 8th Ave, its the perfect place to have dinner before the theatre. Portions are large so sharing is advised. Delicious sushi."

  • "Out of the six things that we tried to order at 6 PM, they were out of three, including red bean ice cream. Who runs out of ice cream when you can simply keep it in the freezer? We also felt rushed by the server, who was setting up our seats for the next diners before we even finished our desserts. The food was also overpriced. That being said, the sashimi was nice and the Kobe beef skewers were excellent. However, the salmon skin was not crispy at all. Lastly, the seaweed salad was tasteless, and I'm pretty sure that two of the alleged five different types of seaweed were the same, but dyed different colors."

  • "the food was great, the layout of the restaurant is open & nice, the waiters could have been a bit more attentive and both the waiters & the chefs were very loud, yelling japanese to each other, which i suppose is part of the atmosphere, but it was difficult to have a conversation when they started yelling things like: "ahhsoooHAAA" to each other SO loud we couldn't even hear each other, as well as banging on wood. it got to be annoying and we ended up leaving early because of it."

  • "The location makes this place great for before a show, its also a large space so allows for groups easily without feeling crammed in. Its not overly fancy. We ordered the prefix which was good, they substituted my sushi for sashimi even though it said no substitutions. Desert came out a bit slow since we needed to get to a show. Overall, i would recommend for a casual dinner before a play. Also, would love if they would add a few "special" rolls to the menu as the sushi menu consists of the regular sushi options only. Lots of options for the non sushi eater tho!"

  • "We were in NYC for the weekend, walked by the restaurant on our way to back to our hotel, and decided to go back for dinner the next night. Servers were very attentive, and the food was great, including the sushi and sashimi. Try the grilled tuna - fresh and fabulous!"

  • "The bar is a great. It is not a traditional bar but one where you are eating and being served with long platters/tray. Its very interesting being so close as they prepare your food its kind of like Benihana but no heat and bit more upscale. Its a very entertaining restaurant. The Japanese BBQ is very tasty and healthy."
