A word from Inakaya
Our original restaurant in Japan was established and opened its first door in the heart of Roppongi, Tokyo in 1970, as the traditional "Robata-yaki" restaurant. Since then, Inakaya has been loved by substantial numbers of distinguished personalities, comprising of former President of the United States, Hollywood stars, and other celebrities and the epicureans from around the world for more than 30 years. "Robata" is the Japanese term that stands for "around a sunken hearth" and "yaki" means "grilling". Families used to gather around the hearth for dinner, which evolved into "Robata-yaki" style. It is known as a type of traditional cuisine, which features fresh ingredients grilled in proximity of guests' own eyes. Foods are cooked on open-flame, its ancient but healthy grilling method of dropping excess oil has attained its popularity, and has spread throughout Japan. And now it comes to New York!

Its very interesting being so close as they prepare your food its kind of like Benihana but no heat and bit more upscale. Its a very entertaining restaurant. The Japanese BBQ is very tasty and healthy."

  • "Unusual by American standards, you would think you were in Tokyo in this Times Square restaurant. Upon entering, you are immediately greeted by shouts in Japanese. It was explained that this was customary, and these continued throughout our stay, but you can get used to it and time your conversations around them. The food was delicious and well presented, but the portions were small by American standards. I would go again, but not for my main meal of the day,"

  • "Looking for a good sushi/fun atmosphere place to take my 20/something daughters before "Aladdin" on broadway. Never have experienced a place like this! They greet you and all the waiters/chefs shout out in Japanese. The saki menu is extensive. We went during restaurant week, and were treated to quite the menu. Half our party chose from the menu/ the rest of us went with the "restaurant week" selections and added the "saki pairings". That gave us 3 different sakis paired with each course which were amazing, even in the way they were served! This was our first time in a Robata style atmosphere with the chefs reaching over the bar and serving your food with a long handled paddle. So fun, food great, total success! e"

  • "Restaurant Week 2014: seared tuna salad was one of the best dishes I've had in a while. Great value, too. But, I also ordered Kumamoto oysters that were lackluster--small and not very well cleaned. Main course: 7 pieces nigiri. The fish was very fresh. However, the chef overloaded the wasabi so it was hard to taste the fish. Also ordered a hotate and negitoro. Both were very good, but the hotate did not come with sea salt/any sort of seasoning so it's flavor was a little bland. Dessert was very nice, but I'm not a big dessert buff so I cannot comment."

  • "Our offices just moved to the area and have enjoyed Inakaya a few times now. Great lunch spot with lots of healthy, delicious choices. Service is good and staff is attentive. Only minor annoyance was that we had a group of 5 and the tables do not accommodate seating for more than 4very well. The end of the table does not allow your legs to go under, thus the fifth person end up eating hunched over and away from the table. Very annoying if you are eating something like soup. Food is great and I highly recommend the grilled veggie appetizer. Who knew grilled lettuce could be so tasty?"

  • "The greeting was loud and unison as you enter the restaurant. Food were amazing, the yellowtail collar was huge, biggest I ever seen from any Japanese restaurant ever offered, but so tasty. The Kobe beef tongue was so tender it just melts in your mouth. There entertainment as well, it was a show on how they make "mochi", I am not going to give that away, you will need to see and experience it yourself. depending on what you ordered it does get a little pricey but it all worth it."

  • "The service was great, both the waitress and the manager were friendly and helpful. The food needs to be thrown out. Tuna salad in a tuna roll? really? that's not ironic or kitsch, its just awful. You do not offer sushi like that in NYC. I have been to other modern and neon places whose sushi was great, but this sushi made the hotel itself seem cheap and sad. Would not recommend other than a meeting spot to go someplace else, cause the drinks are also strange and incredibly expensive."

  • "I have walked by this restaurant many times, somehow, I never tried it until this restaurant week I went with my friend who worked in Tokyo for 3 years, he said this place really remind him of Japan, even though it is much spacious than typical tiny Japanese restaurants, the environment is so friendly and energetic! you can feel very comfortable to chat with your friends and have some great meal at the same time. we ordered the kobe beef which was awesome, and the three courses sake paring was a great deal! we will definitely go back some!"

  • "I came with three friends, one of whom was unfortunately stuck in traffic. The two of us pleaded with the hostess to hold our reservation and that we could order for our friend who was just minutes away and was just in traffic. The hostess was so inflexible about it and told us repeatedly she will give our reservation to others. This was really bad customer service. If we had already said we would vouch for our friend and order for her, what does it matter if she's a bit late? Fortunately when my friend came, the manager seated us. Hostesses like that should not exist. The food was good though, and our server was so friendly that our experience was salvaged"

  • "Check out the website pictures and go get some robata yaki. They grill in front of you and serve your order on a long wooden paddle. Fun dining with delicious food. The sushi bar is behind the robata grillers, and the quality is Excellent! The sake selections are great, try the masu - cold sake served in the wooden box, which you sip from the corners. Courteous servers make it a really nice experience."

  • "Went here on Valentines day. The atmosphere is not very romantic but it's definitely an experience. My partner and I are not a traditional couple so this was a good fit for us. I loved that the restaurant was authentic and traditional, he liked the overall experience. I thought the food was good thought a bit pricey but that's comes with the neighborhood. It also was a bit loud thought not loud enough to bother me. I would recommend sitting at the sushi bar and not the table, it's less intimate but more fun."

  • "This is a place great for dinner, and it's conveniently located, a half a block from Port Authority. The chefs there are all Japanese, so they know how to server the authentic robatayaki. Although most robatayaki restaurants are smaller, giving it a more family style feel. The counter at this place is bigger than I would like, since I prefer smaller one, where you can clearly see how the chef grill the food. And if you go with a small group, I highly recommend the counter. That's where you get the full experience. Even though they have sushi menu, please skip that. You're not there for sushi, but for what they're known for, which is robatayaki. Overall, I had a pleasant experience. The staff are super friendly!"

  • "Inakaya is the perfect spot for group gatherings. They have elongated tables that can seat over ten people, communal style. This is separate from the two person booths. The chefs are always lively and making communicable noises only understood by them and it is quite funny. They also serve some of the plates to those seated at the sushi table with long flat sticks by climbing on top of the table edge, then dropping it on the plate, pretty cool stuff. The food here is mostly sushi and seafood centric and it's ok but the experience is quite fun."

  • "I love Robata grills, and loved my visit to the Inakaya in Tokyo. This was not that. The food was uniformly dry and tasted charred. The charm of the Rappongi location was that all the fresh ingredients were out, and you could point to the exact mushroom (for example) and they would grill it to your specifications. At the times square location, the paddles were merely gimmicks to fool misguided tourists as to how terrible the food was. Save your money - go elsewhere!"

  • "My husband and I found the place on the web and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was good, the sake list was extensive. The decor and ambience were fun. The servers place your food and drinks on wooden paddles and everyone yells in japanese as they hand the food to the diners! The wait staff was very nice, everyone smiling and truly concerned to ensure you were enjoying yourself. We will definitely go back! Amy and Aric."
