Diner Reviews
  • "What I love about In Vino is the dining experience and the food. It has big windows that open to the street for a nice summer night when you don't want to be stuck inside a dark restaurant. The rustic decor complements the food perfectly. The servers are modest, friendly and helpful; no pretension or arrogance here! The food is all homemade and delicious! My only complaint is that I wish there were more options for the second course! The comforting thing with that is that the few things they have on the menu they do Really well! Its an East Village must try."

  • "The most enjoyable dining experience I've had in a very long time. 10/10 hands down for everything from food-helpful server-ambiance ... Decor. Do yourself a favour, go there!"

  • "We made a reservation for 6pm early dinner, based on reviews from a search for restaurants in the East Village; we had theater tickets on 10th Street at 8pm. It was quite a walk from Astor Place subway, past several apartment complexes. We got there at 6. Place was dark and empty, and had a vague musty damp smell wafting onto the street from the open doors. We decided to cancel our reservation, and the young man at the door didn't seem surprised. I guess it's more of a later night wine bar than a restaurant. I was not inspired to come back for the food. Sorry, In Vino. We ended up going to Shabu Tatsu on 10th Street, which was fabulous."

  • "Went with a friend and had no expectations. Really cool spot with great service. Our waiter/bartender took amazing care of us. Recommended some popular pasta dishes. All the pasta is handmade in house. Recommend the bolognese and pappardelle. Would go back any day."

  • "Sexy wine cellar, cave like atmosphere, candles the whole shabang. Rustic. Very impressive Italian wine list and I've done my homework.. Great service, friendly, technically on point and knowledgable. Not pretentious at all, food and wine recommendations were on point. Overall pricing was very reasonable in exchange for the quality and value of the overall experience. I shall return."

  • "The wine list is what brought us there, but the food and service kept us there all night! Great spot, highly recommend!!!"

  • "Overall, a winner. Had dinner here on a Saturday night. The place is absolutely charming, and the waitstaff is attentive but not overbearing. The exposed brick, concrete & ducts give a bit of an old world "cava" feel to it. But even when it filled up completely, we could still hear ourselves converse. The wine list is excellent -- as long as you like Italian. As to the food, our appetizers were outstanding. For example, grilled asparagus salad featured perfectly grilled aparagus and fresh burrata (though it was only billed as mozarella). Main courses were good but less outstanding. Pork was slightly dry, but flavors still were good. Pastas were fresh and cooked just right. "

  • "We had a very nice dinner before the opera across the street. The lasagna was excellent; steak was good; I had the branzino over brochalie rabe. Because I don't like brochalie rabe, I asked them to substitute any other vegetable; I don't particularly like asparagus either, so the very nice waitress asked if I would want kale. I said sure. The fish came out with fresh kale and a few slices of tomato. It was ok, but I would have like some kind of cooked vegetable; I did not want another salad with my meal. The waitress and staff were very accommodating and we enjoyed the wine and because it was early, 6pm on a Friday night, it was not noisy and we enjoyed the entire experience."

  • "Terrific food and an imaginative wine list. Our foodie friends from Baltimore enjoyed it as much as we did."

  • "I am generally not one to leave restaurant reviews, but this place is worth the trip. The food and the wine list are consistently quite good -- I have been here a half dozen times thus far and always leave happy! My personal favorites: the burrata, meatballs and the gnocchi."

  • "My boyfriend and I have been going to In Vino for the past 5 years - it never disappoints us! The food and service is always amazing. Definitely reccommend this little hole in the wall restuarant to anyone who loves a great Italian meal and a nice bottle of wine to go with it!"

  • "First visit and found the food was well prepared, well presented, and delicious. The big wine list offered many complimentary selections at all price points. We will be back soon, bringing friends."

  • "I didn't have the food (so I just marked it as fair but I'm sure it's delish), but went for a wine class and it was very enjoyable! Food looked delish! Wine list is AMAZING, and they know their wines!"

  • "I have been coming to this restaurant for years. Its a small but fantastic restaurant. The italian food is some of the best in the east village. Worth a shot if you haven't tried it yet!"

  • "My only complaint was that it is itty bitty and the tables are closely packed. Whew, that out of the way, the food was fabulous. An absolutely amazing wine list and although I am generally knowledgeable about wine, the list is all Italian, so I deferred to their recommendations with price/preference guidelines. Beautiful wine at < $100 with the food. I had the papardelle (gorgeous) and then had one of the best steaks that I've had in years (sadly, couldn't finish, but a street person also had an awesome meal). We were visiting NYC; but recommended it to our daughter who lives there & we recommend places to her only on occasion."

  • "Cool atmosphere, but ... 90 degree and hard, the seats are very uncomfortable. No bottle of wine below $40. Calimari and Kale with citrus vinaigrette, delicious."

  • "In Vino offers an excellent dining experience. The menu of authentic Italian foods was plentiful and each dish we tasted was "a party in our mouths". Delicious! The wine list was superior and varied. The servers were very knowledgeable about the wines and willing to make suggestions. The ambiance was cozy and friendly. Over all, a superior dining experience."

  • "We were looking for a casual place to get some good italian food and we found In Vino through a Google search. It came recommended so we gave it a shot after clicking through some photos of neighborhood restaurants, and selecting this one based on price, and the fact that there were no stuffy white table cloths. In Vino is dark, rustic, candlelit and great for a date or a small group of friends. We even saw one guy bring in his mother and sat her at the bar - everyone was very friendly and laid back. If you are in a rush for your food, this is not the place for you- it is definitely a leisurely pace type setting. Food was excellent, with smallish but very filling portions."

  • "Unassuming front........perfect sized restaurant, locals at the maybe 10 seat bar.......great wine list and great food. 3 old friends for dinner who've been doing this for 30 years........we had 2 bottles of wine we've never had before, one of us had the special risotto, one had the ravioli and one had the pasta with ragu......all cleaned our plates! Just a delightful Christmas party dinner for us! Thank you In Vino."

  • "This place was excellent! I arrived early for my date and sat at the bar trying out different wines. Turns out the owner was serving me and he was insanely knowledgable about all the different wines they had, which shows that he's extremely passionate about wine. As for the actual restaurant, its small but perfect for a romantic date. The food is great, excellent wine selection, and ambience of the place really let me connect with my date. Also, the servers were great. Definite recommend!"

  • "Service was just OK- we felt ignored for most of the experience. Also there was no heat on so it was pretty freezing in the restaurant. Food was great though!"

  • "The food was delicious and reasonably priced. Wines are private import and focus is on Italy. The staff is young, friendly and unpretentious yet passionate about wine and food."

  • "Excellent quality. Keep coming back for more, and the gnocchi keep getting better."

  • "Regarding atmosphere: Although the seats are wooden and could not be considered sumptuous, we were comfortable. The ceiling is a curved stucco grotto-like affair about 18 feet up. The overall ambience is cozy and intimate. When the place fills up, the noise level rises, but we could still talk. We had a liter bottle of chianti which was very good and enough for five of us to have about a glass a half. Dinner (3 apps and 5 pasta entrees) and wine came to about $150 before tip - an amazing value. Portions were moderate except for the lasagna which was large. Great pasta. This place attracts a young, hip crowd and although our group is a few years away from getting theirs hips replaced we felt comfortable and enjoyed In Vino."

  • "My boyfriend and I trucked it to NYC to have a dinner and see a show for a birthday celebration. Although In Vino was a great restaurant, I wouldn't recommend it if you need to be in the theatre district at a specific time. It took us about 45 minutes to get to the show via a cab. However, the experience and the food was great. We HIGHLY recommend the truffle ravioli. It simply melted in your mouth and the flavors were amazing. We started out with 2 appetizers and a salad then shared 2 different pasta dishes. Unfortunately we didn't have time for dessert, but the bill was very reasonable for what we got. The atmosphere is very romantic and just perfect for what we were looking for."

  • "We tried two starters and two mains; the food was average. No noticeable flavours for dishes that would have been expected to have some (e.g. burrata, artichokes). The pasta was overcooked. The setting is actually quite uncomfortable (narrow tables, wooden benches with paper-thin "cushions") in spite of the seemingly romantic rustic atmosphere. Very disappointing."

  • "I've been to in vino several times and have never had a bad meal or experience. It's one of my favorite places. The ravioli is a must!"

  • "Everyone in my party LOVED their food. THe Lasagna, the Osso bucco, the Burata, just great. The wait staff could have been a tiny bit more attentive (we had to 'get their attention' to get water, 2nd of drinks) - other than that great food and value!"

  • "Waaaay East in the East Village, there is a place where you'd expect to sit next to a rocker. A gritty rocker who appreciates great wines and superb food, that is. Because Il Vino has a wine list almost as big as the phone book (remember phone books?) and a menu that, while small, offers some pretty delicious items. But first, the ambiance: you're greeted at the door of this cozy cave-like space by a long-haired handsome guy. You taste the wine, a delicious red from a region in Italy you've never heard of, much less been to. It went down perfectly with the osso bucco and the rack of lamb. Both were amazingly good. Just the thing to enjoy while listening to Tom Waits."

  • "Lovely ambience with friendly personable staff. The owner was there and sent a glass of wine to the table for me to try while I was waiting for the other guests. He later came by to see how the dinner was going. I have been here three times, and it is a perfect spot for a quiet dinner. They play 60's hits and jazz in the background. The ravioli with mushroom, truffle sauce is the best."

  • "I picked this restaurant because I wanted to try their lamb ragu...and I was not disappointed! Our server knew both the extensive wine list and menu well and was able to make very informed recommendations. The food was flavorful and fresh and delicious! Quite easily one of my new favorite restaurants!"
