A word from Imperial
At Imperial, Chef/Owner Paley and Chef de Cuisine Doug Adams will re-imagine and re-present Pacific Northwest culinary pathways. Exemplifying Oregon’s own James Beard's culinary philosophy, Chef/Owner Paley and Chef de Cuisine Doug Adams will explore menu ideas that have historic significance while exploring cooking methods and ingredients from the diverse bounty of our region. The most prominent feature of Imperial's kitchen is an impressive wood fire grill and rotisserie that will incorporate the use of native hard and fruitwoods. Inspired by warm, primitive, burning campfires and the big open spaces of the Pacific Northwest, Imperial will concentrate on natural and uncomplicated preparations, serving the community by celebrating its past and providing a welcoming and generous place to eat.

Truly enjoyed sitting at the table overlooking Mike on the wood fire grill/oven. Service was spot on and vibrant. Folks here like being here and it comes through in all they do. Garrett too time to introduce himself and share more about how and why they chose the gill while I sipped on a New Money cocktail. If you are in downtown Portland you owe it to your self to stop in.

We ate at Imperial for the first time last week, and it was excellent in every respect. The cocktails were interesting, subtle and delicious. My "East of Eden" was like nothing I have ever tasted before. Our group of four shared 8 dishes and the range of flavors, the freshness of the ingredients, and the creative recipes had us raving all night. The Ling Cod and the Tuna were especially good. We had been to Eva Gene's a week before, and it's a great restaurant too, but Imperial is better, seriously. It's that good. We topped of the evening with two desserts, and of course, they were delicious. We will go back again soon. Thank you, Imperial!

Paley's Place is one of our favorite Portland restaurants and because Vitaly Paley is involved with this restaurant I expected more. The food was fine not outstanding. The menu is difficult to follow. According to our waitress some dishes come with sides and others do not, some are small plates while others are entree size - however they are not noted this way on the menu. For example a Meat Plate, listed as a signature dish, is a charcuterie plate with no bread and would be better as an appetizer vs. main dish. A revised menu would help improve the dining experience considerably.

Whether at Paley's Place or Imperial, you can be assured of the finest in fare. While Imperial is a bit loud, it is excellent. For a person who never thought he would eat a kale salad, this is my go-to first course.

We truly enjoyed our dinner on Monday evening at Imperial. When we arrived, we were treated as though we were expected, shown right to our table and our server was there immediately. She was most helpful in discussing cocktails and menu items. Cocktails were delicious and as described. I loved the grilled romaine salad and padron peppers. My husband, a meat and potatoes man thoroughly enjoyed his flat iron steak and grilled potatoes which was a masterful feat. My braised pork shoulder entree was perfectly prepared outshone only by the heirloom tomatoes and corn relish. Our only regret was that we were too full after dinner for dessert. We thought that the check was most reasonable for the quality of the meal and will return.

Brunch for four. Service was a bit slow, even though there were only a few tables being served. Menu had pretty traditional/simple brunch items. Portions were a bit small for the price. Corn cakes and pickled watermelon were delicious. All of our meals were a bit on the salty side, especially the french fries. The pastrami was good for the first half of the plate, but the salt caught up with me, and I couldn't finish it! Enjoyed the hot sauce. The top forty hits from the 90's (pretty loud!), seemed out of character for the ambiance. It took a while for the server to take care of our check and I almost had to get up and go looking for someone to cash us out. I thought it was pretty fine, but probably wouldn't make a special trip to go back.

Food was good but service was terrible. We went there for our 20th Anniversary and told them that when we made reservations. Didn't expect them to make a big deal of it but hoped for a nice table. The put us in the very back next to the kitchen even though the place was mostly empty. When my husband asked to move they were RUDE, rolled their eyes at us and practically threw the menus on the table!! The waitress was ok but got the drink order wrong and the bartender yelled at her openly. All in all not a pleasant experience on avery special evening!

We enjoyed a fabulous meal -- "A radish walks into a bar..." cocktail with duck meatballs and crispy fried pigtail followed by a lovely filet and wine. Service was slow, a party of 4 arrived 20 minutes after us and were served dinner 10 minutes ahead. The steak was served semi warm, not hot , it must have been setting on the counter 15 minutes prior to being served. Pasta dishes were over seasoned with too much fennel.

Wonderful amazing food and superb service! The loud and pervasive music will keep me from going back: could not hear my dining companion, could not carry on a conversation due to music booming in our ears. Difficult to savor food and time spent when your ears hurt. We found ourselves yelling across the table. Not ok; nerve-wracking.

When we tried Imperial on a recent visit to Portland, we were at first a bit overwhelmed by the unusual menu with many unfamiliar ingredients. Happy to say that we all found something to our liking and felt this was one of the best menus we experienced in the city. Our only complaint was the very high noise level, making it almost impossible to hold a conversation.

It might have been the noise level that caused the order mishaps. One order of roasted peppers became 2. Prawns never arrived, were inquired about and then appeared. Order of carotts never appeared. We were given a free dessert as a cosulation prize. My 3rd visit and not the best.

Where to start.... This restaurant was recommended to me by an acquaintance on the East Coast. I looked at the menu, and as it was three blocks away from our hotel booked a reservation well in advance. This was our wedding day, and this was our wedding dinner destination. When I made the reservation I included the notes, "recommended by friend, wedding day dinner, romantic table, thank you very much." We were sat in a corner, sandwiched between the kitchen and a group of foul-mouthed jerks. Our service was poor at best, the food mediocre. A manager never came by to check and see how our dining experience was - in fact, I never even saw a manager. Mediocre food, poor service and awful hospitality. I should have used my own judgment.

It was clear a chef runs this place. The cocktails were amazing. The food was very well done, and one dish even brought back vivid memories of being out in a log cabin as a child. The chef has mastery over proper meat seasoning, cooking temperatures and subtle addition of smoke to all dishes (even cocktails). It also seemed like I got what I wanted for a lower cost than I was expecting with such fancy food.

had lunch here a few weeks back and had a great experience. got the kale salad with the tuna addition. it was great. so my wife and I had an chance to get out of the house without kids for the first time in months and I couldn't wait to bring her here. I had raved about the salad I had and the service. we get there and ordered a bottle of wine recommended by the waiter. it was great. I wanted to order the same kale veggie salad with the tuna addition that I had loved the last time I was there and was told that I was unable to order it with the tuna at dinner. I asked if they could still make it but the waiter insisted that it was only available for lunch. the salad was able to be ordered but not with the same seared tuna? really?

We go to Imperial often and have never been disappointed. We brought another couple this evening, and they loved it too. We all started with cocktails, which were excellent. (My spouse even went beyond the fabulous Radish cocktail this time.) We split the kale salad to start, which is very tasty. For entrees, my spouse had the trout and I had the house made pasta. Both were exceptional. We also shared many of the sides (broccoli, cauliflower and the fabulous Parker House rolls). As usual, we ate too much to try dessert, though we did give serious consideration to sharing the delicious pie! As always, a very good place to have an excellent casual meal.

The interior design is edgy modern yet warm and welcoming. Service was informed and timely, but it's all about the food. Lucky Portland, we have a superior chef dishing out delectables at his eponymous location-Paley's Place and more recently Imperial. Small plate concept with inventive food--oh the amazing tongue with a duck egg called "Steak and Eggs". Where else could you have goat, tongue, crab, and duck in one heavenly collection of perfect? The duck meatballs with prune and whatever were immensely flavorful with a bit of a kick. The goat and pea crepes were original and delicious. The crab pasta with asparagus was amazing--the pasta alone would have been a splendid dish. Value for $? Fantastic.

The noise level at Imperial was enough to make me want to run from this restaurant, which I should have. Very difficult to carry any conversation without shouting! The food was very mediocre for Paley's standard. I love Paley's restaurant in NW but skip this one. The kale & vegetable salad was over dressed and the grilled cauliflower was limp and saturated with balsamic vinegar, hardly nicely grilled as I expected. We stopped at this and went elsewhere for main courses.

Never have I been so glad that our Plan A fell through - Imperial was really wonderful! Went on a date to Imperial. We started with cocktails; she had an Esplandido (loved) and I had a Harlequin (not so much). Artichokes for appetizers (she eventually was overwhelmed by the oyster mayo). I really enjoyed the ribeye with fingerling potatoes. She had the pasta with dungeness crab & preserved lemons (she noted it was very peppery & there were pockets of intense lemon). While this sounds like the food & drink were uneven, the overall experience was great. She was even taken aback when the server mentioned which foods had nuts in them (I noted in my reservation of her nut allergy).

As tourists in Portland on the Fourth of July (here for a weekend wedding), we were casting about for good restaurant. We called several, each of which was on summer break or closed for the holiday, but Paley's suggested trying its newer sister restaurant, Imperial. Knowing Paley's, that was an easy try. It was excellent. The clientele was a mix of ages. The food allowed one to mix and match among small plates and entree sized plates. The menu items were inventive and delicious (at least as many as we could try). And it was all done in a warehouse type space with a very good vibe.
