A word from Imperial
At Imperial, Chef/Owner Paley and Executive Chef Bettinger will re-imagine and re-present Pacific Northwest culinary pathways. Exemplifying Oregon’s own James Beard's culinary philosophy, Chef/Owner Paley and Executive Chef Bettinger will explore menu ideas that have historic significance while exploring cooking methods and ingredients from the diverse bounty of our region. The most prominent feature of Imperial's kitchen is an impressive wood fire grill and rotisserie that will incorporate the use of native hard and fruitwoods. Inspired by warm, primitive, burning campfires and the big open spaces of the Pacific Northwest, Imperial will concentrate on natural and uncomplicated preparations, serving the community by celebrating its past and providing a welcoming and generous place to eat.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This is the second time we have been to Imperial. First time was for dinner which was excellent and the second for brunch. The brunch menu has the old stand-bys and many unique yummy dishes. All of our brunch items were delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "We had the French Toast and two orders of pastrami hash. The food was really, really good."

  • "From the cocktails to the coffee cake it was an end to end good experience. "

  • "Our group enjoyed the entrees and veggie sides ordered. The menu featured a gluten free notation which is greatly appreciated. The house cocktails were good (A radish walked into a bar, New Money, Iron Curtain). The beer list was a good local representation. The wine list was lacking and the wine tap was oxidized. Sides were mushrooms, broccoli and cauliflower. The mushrooms and cauliflower were stand out. The sauce on the cauliflower could be a side in its own right. Entrees had were fried rabbit, T&T secreto and the albacore. All three entrees were thoroughly enjoyed. None left unsatisfied and return trips will be made. "

  • "Everything was great. I haven't had a dish I didn't like."

  • "We haven't moaned and had our eyes pop open over multiple plates at a new restaurant in quite a while, but that did happen at our first Imperial dinner. So many delicious bites and interesting combinations. Such an urge to try almost everything on the menu. Liked the casual atmosphere. It belied the fabulous menu. Also heard best comeback ever from a waiter when we commented on some of the unusual and obscure (to us, at least) wines on the menu: "who wants to go to a restaurant and buy wines you could buy at a grocery store?" Kind of hard to argue with that. Service was perfect, friendly, helpful."

  • "Had lunch with colleagues at Imperial and really enjoyed the Pastrami sandwich and tomato soup. My colleagues both had grilled cheese sandwiches that looked delicious. It's a great alternative for lunch in the business district."

  • "Great spot. Food is on point and service is good. I always crave a bit more excitement from the staff, but that is the case for most places I dine in Portland. Service was attentive and informative. Food will not disappoint, neither will cocktails. Fantastic wine list. Higher on my price point but well worth it for the food."

  • "Imperial has the most delicious food & drinks, with a really great, Industrial atmosphere. The menu is indescribably amazing...but for someone with a Gluten Intolerance, I found the menu to be refreshingly diverse as well! Nearly ALL of the main courses are GF!! They also have multiple Vegan choices for Portland's Vegans. AND it is moderately priced."

  • "This restaurant was great. The wood fired grill is very interesting and the steak and pork chop were really good but the highlight was the smashed potato and the fried radishes."
    Dined on 4/2/2014
  • "I was told by multiple people I met throughout the day to order the pork chop. I was disappointed. It was overcooked and dried out. The appetizers, beers and service were all good. Too bad about the entree. I would try Imperial again if I lived in Portland as it may have been a one off but since I do not live there I would much rather try different restaurants on my next visit."

  • "This was our first visit and we chose Imperial because of the Portland Dining Month's menu. It was outstanding. The entree was a lamb dish cooked to perfection. Did you ever have lamb that tasted 'too lamby'?? Well, this taste was mild but you could still tell it was lamb. The texture was buttery. The combination of flavors with the addition of curried cashew brittle was awesome. The almond cake (we were thinking marzipan-like) was so far from what we were anticipating but it did not disappoint. It was delish. We plan to return to Imperial and we are hoping that maybe we'll see the lamb dish and almond cake on the regular menu!"

  • "We have had two dinners and one breakfast here. Planning another dinner this coming weekend. Everything we ordered was superb! We ordered family style on our last visit just so we could taste more things and we were not dissappointed. Bringing four friends with us this weekend so we can try even more. This is our new favorite. Service has always been excellent."

  • "My sister came in from out of town and I wanted her to experience Portlands chef. We were not disappointed. It was great food, service , and she loved the atmosphere. Quite a crowd came in for happy hour. So I think my husband and I will go back and try that"

  • "I've heard great things about this restaurant, but didn't have the same experience. Your dining experience is all about your server....Your server needs to sell you on the menu. The potions were small especially the quail and our server did not recommend more sides of offset the main courses. I had to ask for refills, even when my server removed the empty wine glass. Maybe this server could not accommodate for a group of 6. Positive, the food had great flavor."

  • "We arrived a little early for our reservation, so we sat at the bar. The cocktails were exceptional. (We had the New Money & Radish walked into a bar.) The bartenders were so good, that we decided to eat at the bar. We started with the vegetable galette with a romesco sauce & arugula. It was superb! My spouse had the grilled shrimp, and I had the pork chop. We also shared the (excellent) french fries. The pork chop was served with a peppered honey, which was a perfect pairing. We had a great experience."

  • "We visited The Imperial for Dining Month. The Lamb was amazing! Wonderful flavors, very tender, decent portion. In general, everyone in our group loved their food. The atmosphere is very nice, but it is on the louder side. The meal was wonderful, but it took quite a while to be served. We were given an extra appetizer as a thank you for being patient. We were fine because we were having fun as a group, but if we were trying to catch a show and were on a timeline, it would not be the best place to go."

  • "We had a reservation, and our wait was still a little long, but it was worth it. I chose the tasting menu with the wine pairing, and it was excellent. I'll recommend and go back anytime."

  • "Amazing food. Interesting and innovative flavor combinations; great attention to detail. Easily as good as some of the "top" restaurants where you must reserve weeks in advance, and pay much more."

  • "My mother in law was visiting from San Diego and she wanted to have at least one meal in Portland. After reviewing the many choices for Restaurant Month, we decided upon the Imperial because of the chef's reputation. We weren't disappointed. The server was friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable of the entrees and wine. My MIL had the RM 3 course special and I ordered off the menu. She said her meal was perfection, enjoyed it immensely. It was Butter lettuce/buttermilk tarragon salad, Braised Lamb, and Almond torte. I had the Carlton Farms Pork Chops- delicious. I also had the Kale/Vegetable salad- delicious. Overall, we would highly recommend a meal there and certainly come back again. It was wonderful."

  • "We did the Portland Dinning month menu with a few other options. The tasteing menu was good, but great with the wine pairing. My wife deiced to opt out of the tasting menu for soup and bone-in pork chop. Chop was really good. We'll be back"

  • "I've been a couple of times for lunch and just made my first visit for breakfast. The meals are smaller portions than comparative restaurants of the same price downtown, but the food is fine. The breakfast was a little heavy on the salt. We had a very nice server; she was courteous and attentive."

  • "Once again this place does a great job. Very quiet for an early dinner on a Sunday evening, but still great food and great service."

  • "I went there with a recommendations from a friend. there are there staff on the entrance when I walked in. They are in the middle of helping another patron. I was standing there for 5 minutes and none of the staff gave me an eye contact or a nod. They left the entrance to assist the other patrons, leaving me standing on the entrance for another three minutes. The host finally came back and greeted me, I told her what happened and she apologized. She seated me, ordered my food and during my whole dinner, nobody ever came to check on me, asking how my food or anything that I need. This is truly my worst dining experience, the host haad the opportunity to make it right after the first my complain at the entrance but chose not too."

  • "Imperial is located along side the St Lucia Hotel. Go for the March dine out- $29 three course dining out experience. Wine pairing $16. There was some thought in pairing the wines and the lamb dish with cauliflower couscous was tender, layers of flavor and a beautifully presented. First course was a bibb lettuce salad with a tarragon dressing and slivers of radish. Desserts apparently can change, ours was a lovely almond cake with marmalade. Service was quick, a little too quick as we felt a little rushed to move on. Otherwise Vitaly and his crew presented a lovely March dining experience for a group of locals. We've decide to get back in before the month is over. We've had brunch, lunch, happy hour w/o complaints."

  • "We had a group of 6 in our dinner party. Service was awesome. The food was very good every dish was spot on! The thing that I liked most was that I needed help choosing the wine because of the variety of food at the table. The manager came over have help me select a bottle that was less money than my original selection and it was FANTASTIC. Everyone at the table thought I had splurged and went for the >$100 bottle."

  • "Loved the food and the small portions. We had the March Dining Month 3 course special and the Wagu beef carpacio and a quail salad. We shared all five plates and everything was outstanding! The excellent waiter encouraged sharing the dishes and brought fresh plates and utensils with each. The variety of big flavors led us to choose pints of micro brew beer and there were several excellent ones to choose from. We plan to go back again before the March Special dinner passes and try some of the other dishes. Loved the Imperial and thought it was an outstanding value! The dinner service starts at 5PM and the location is very near the Portland Center Stage theater. We plan to make the Imperial a frequent pre-theater supper spot."

  • "I enjoyed lunch with a friend this week at Imperial and it was delightful. I had the ginger beer drink which was delicious and I will surely get again. We split an order of the fries and she had a bowl of soup while I had a half tuna sandwich and a great salad. All was very good although it was a bit loud. I look forward to returning soon."

  • "We decided to try Imperial during the Portland Dining Month. The 3 course meal & wine pairings selected by the chef seems to be a very good depcition of what this restaurant is all about. The simple butter lettuce salad with a creamy tarragon dressing, the succulent braised lamb served on cauliflower "cous cous" with a sprinkling of cashew brittle & the lovely almond cake served with a dollop of fruited yogurt cream were all fabulous & definately left me with the desire to come back & try more of what this lovely restaurant has to offer."

  • "Our party of four felt well-treated by breakfast out at this establishment. Attention to detail from having enough sugar on the table and a spoon for each cup of coffee, added to the experience. I enjoyed the Semolina Corn Cake textures and flavors! Can't wait to go back. Our entire group was pleased."

  • "We decided to choose Imperial as one of our destinations during 2014 Portland Dining Month. A great choice indeed. We both opted for the 3 course Portland Dining Month dinner along with the paired wine flight. This was one fantastic meal. The server was fantastic and very engaging. This was an overall fantastic dining experience."

  • "Paley's crew put a lot of time, energy and attention to detail into a promotional-discount dinner (Dining Month 3-course prix-fixe menu for $29). The pork shoulder entree was ample and delicious; the wine pairings, perfect. They definitly won us over, and we'll be back!"

  • "We made our reservation fifteen minutes before dinner and put in a silly special request in the reservation: an ice sculpture of the Fonz. The hostess hadn't heard of him, so there was no danger of this place jumping the shark. The drinks are creative, well balanced and tasty. We charged the tuna ceviche. Quality tuna. Nice flavors. Fiancee had the trout. Very good. He really enjoyed it. I had the steelhead. Also very good. The thing we both liked best was the side of roasted potatoes we ordered. They were fantastic. Our server was attentive, but not overbearing. All in all, a nice meal. We'll go back again."

  • "Haven't been back to Paley's Place for years because of the arrogant & obnoxious wait staff, so went here with some skepticism. The waitress we had & all of her help HERE delivering food etc were very good (friendly & attentive)! Food was pursuant to the 3 course Portland Dining Month menu. Good & tasty, rather lukewarm, heavy on the tarragon. I do admit all of our party REALLY loved the almond tart! You sure knew you were in a hotel lobby...."

  • "My good friend and I celebrated her birthday and we had a fabulous meal. We were able to split a salad, yummy cooked veggies, and a pork dish that was to die for. The nice bottle of house red wine was a hit too. Thank you!"

  • "My wife and I celebrated our anniversary dinner at Imperial, we are foodies at heart and didn't know what to expect. The flavor of the food was amazing. The Vieux Carre' is a drink that you just don't want to end, the rye whisky with cognac and other ingredients are a perfect combination of taste. I am always on the hunt for the perfect burger, the Flat top burger did not disappoint. I have not had a burger deliver like the Flat Top since I had my favorite Kobe Burger in Maui. My wife ordered the Smoked Trout al la Plancha and enjoyed every bite. She is particular when it comes to the preparation of fish, and this dish nailed it. Thank you Imperial, for making our dining experience a great one."

  • "I would recommend this restaurant in a heartbeat! The only drawback would be how loud it was. Our server misheard our wine order due to the noise. We were seated back near the kitchen. I would recommend waiting for a seat in front. Otherwise the food experience was fantastic!"

  • "After a long work week, The Imperial was a great place to unwind, relax, and enjoy great food. The service was attentive without being overbearing. The sides being shareable was a plus as well. The wood-grill steak was amazing."
