A word from Imperial
At Imperial, Chef/Owner Paley and Chef de Cuisine Doug Adams will re-imagine and re-present Pacific Northwest culinary pathways. Exemplifying Oregon’s own James Beard's culinary philosophy, Chef/Owner Paley and Chef de Cuisine Doug Adams will explore menu ideas that have historic significance while exploring cooking methods and ingredients from the diverse bounty of our region. The most prominent feature of Imperial's kitchen is an impressive wood fire grill and rotisserie that will incorporate the use of native hard and fruitwoods. Inspired by warm, primitive, burning campfires and the big open spaces of the Pacific Northwest, Imperial will concentrate on natural and uncomplicated preparations, serving the community by celebrating its past and providing a welcoming and generous place to eat.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed a fabulous meal -- "A radish walks into a bar..." cocktail with duck meatballs and crispy fried pigtail followed by a lovely filet and wine. Imperial's vibe is lively, the menu is creative and well-executed, and the service is wonderful. Make reservations so you can walk in on a bustling evening and feel like a rock star."

  • "Service was slow, a party of 4 arrived 20 minutes after us and were served dinner 10 minutes ahead. The steak was served semi warm, not hot , it must have been setting on the counter 15 minutes prior to being served. Pasta dishes were over seasoned with too much fennel."

  • "Food was fairly good - not outstanding. Service was very poor - inattentive, distracted and when finally offered, condescending. There are far better options in Portland that provide both great food and great service."

  • "Wonderful amazing food and superb service! The loud and pervasive music will keep me from going back: could not hear my dining companion, could not carry on a conversation due to music booming in our ears. Difficult to savor food and time spent when your ears hurt. We found ourselves yelling across the table. Not ok; nerve-wracking."

  • "I had the best eggs Benedict I've ever had in my life! The service was great. I can't wait to go back."

  • "When we tried Imperial on a recent visit to Portland, we were at first a bit overwhelmed by the unusual menu with many unfamiliar ingredients. Happy to say that we all found something to our liking and felt this was one of the best menus we experienced in the city. Our only complaint was the very high noise level, making it almost impossible to hold a conversation."

  • "It might have been the noise level that caused the order mishaps. One order of roasted peppers became 2. Prawns never arrived, were inquired about and then appeared. Order of carotts never appeared. We were given a free dessert as a cosulation prize. My 3rd visit and not the best."

  • "A couple that we met in San Francisco recommended Imperial. Good food friendly staff and a blackberry, peach pie with blackberry, red wine ice cream that was to die for. Not as creative as some other places in town, but worth a visit."

  • "Where to start.... This restaurant was recommended to me by an acquaintance on the East Coast. I looked at the menu, and as it was three blocks away from our hotel booked a reservation well in advance. This was our wedding day, and this was our wedding dinner destination. When I made the reservation I included the notes, "recommended by friend, wedding day dinner, romantic table, thank you very much." We were sat in a corner, sandwiched between the kitchen and a group of foul-mouthed jerks. Our service was poor at best, the food mediocre. A manager never came by to check and see how our dining experience was - in fact, I never even saw a manager. Mediocre food, poor service and awful hospitality. I should have used my own judgment."

  • "Indifferent service, didn't seem to care or take a personal involvement in the service. Not rude just not impressive"
    Dined on 8/2/2014
  • "Food was fabulous. Noise level was so loud that it destroyed the dining experience, making me unable to enjoy my visit or converse comfortably with my dinner companions. I would return gladly if the noise level came under control. As it is, I'll find somewhere else to savor my food."

  • "The food is simply delicious. It is well prepared. I haven't had a dish I didn't like."

  • "The portions were the right size. The selections had both depth and width. The condensed watermelon is a must."

  • "It was clear a chef runs this place. The cocktails were amazing. The food was very well done, and one dish even brought back vivid memories of being out in a log cabin as a child. The chef has mastery over proper meat seasoning, cooking temperatures and subtle addition of smoke to all dishes (even cocktails). It also seemed like I got what I wanted for a lower cost than I was expecting with such fancy food."

  • "Got a bad recommendation on an Oragon Pinot noir. Food was ok but not a "best of Portland" as named by the Local paper food critic Michael ????"

  • "had lunch here a few weeks back and had a great experience. got the kale salad with the tuna addition. it was great. so my wife and I had an chance to get out of the house without kids for the first time in months and I couldn't wait to bring her here. I had raved about the salad I had and the service. we get there and ordered a bottle of wine recommended by the waiter. it was great. I wanted to order the same kale veggie salad with the tuna addition that I had loved the last time I was there and was told that I was unable to order it with the tuna at dinner. I asked if they could still make it but the waiter insisted that it was only available for lunch. the salad was able to be ordered but not with the same seared tuna? really?"

  • "We had a wonderful dinner here on a recent trip to Portland. The menu is inventive and extremely well-executed. Wonderful plates for sharing allowed us to sample a variety of offerings. Service is attentive but not cloying. I would definitely recommend."

  • "Great food, great place! We showed up for an early dinner and ended up eating off of the happy our menu, everything we tasted was wonderful (including the drinks)."

  • "We go to Imperial often and have never been disappointed. We brought another couple this evening, and they loved it too. We all started with cocktails, which were excellent. (My spouse even went beyond the fabulous Radish cocktail this time.) We split the kale salad to start, which is very tasty. For entrees, my spouse had the trout and I had the house made pasta. Both were exceptional. We also shared many of the sides (broccoli, cauliflower and the fabulous Parker House rolls). As usual, we ate too much to try dessert, though we did give serious consideration to sharing the delicious pie! As always, a very good place to have an excellent casual meal."

  • "Remained on the telephone discussing the menu instead of even acknowledging us. eventually she asked if we wanted to sit. He said," we have a reservation on open table", and she remarked that we were late and then seated us in a glare filled window . We decided it was uncomfortable, in every aspect and decided to go to "Saucebox", bruce Carey's restaurant, one block away. DELICIOUS!"

  • "The interior design is edgy modern yet warm and welcoming. Service was informed and timely, but it's all about the food. Lucky Portland, we have a superior chef dishing out delectables at his eponymous location-Paley's Place and more recently Imperial. Small plate concept with inventive food--oh the amazing tongue with a duck egg called "Steak and Eggs". Where else could you have goat, tongue, crab, and duck in one heavenly collection of perfect? The duck meatballs with prune and whatever were immensely flavorful with a bit of a kick. The goat and pea crepes were original and delicious. The crab pasta with asparagus was amazing--the pasta alone would have been a splendid dish. Value for $? Fantastic."

  • "The noise level at Imperial was enough to make me want to run from this restaurant, which I should have. Very difficult to carry any conversation without shouting! The food was very mediocre for Paley's standard. I love Paley's restaurant in NW but skip this one. The kale & vegetable salad was over dressed and the grilled cauliflower was limp and saturated with balsamic vinegar, hardly nicely grilled as I expected. We stopped at this and went elsewhere for main courses."

  • "Imperial was our backup choice for our anniversary dinner - we hadn't been there before, so it felt a little risky for a special occasion. Never have I been so glad that our Plan A fell through - Imperial was really wonderful! The drinks were phenomenal, the servers were lovely and they were willing to accommodate our dietary preferences, and the food was great. We so enjoyed our meal there - we'll definitely be back! Very keen to check out their happy hour."

  • "Went on a date to Imperial. We started with cocktails; she had an Esplandido (loved) and I had a Harlequin (not so much). Artichokes for appetizers (she eventually was overwhelmed by the oyster mayo). I really enjoyed the ribeye with fingerling potatoes. She had the pasta with dungeness crab & preserved lemons (she noted it was very peppery & there were pockets of intense lemon). While this sounds like the food & drink were uneven, the overall experience was great. She was even taken aback when the server mentioned which foods had nuts in them (I noted in my reservation of her nut allergy)."

  • "As tourists in Portland on the Fourth of July (here for a weekend wedding), we were casting about for good restaurant. We called several, each of which was on summer break or closed for the holiday, but Paley's suggested trying its newer sister restaurant, Imperial. Knowing Paley's, that was an easy try. It was excellent. The clientele was a mix of ages. The food allowed one to mix and match among small plates and entree sized plates. The menu items were inventive and delicious (at least as many as we could try). And it was all done in a warehouse type space with a very good vibe."

  • "Lunch was great. Had house smoked turkey that was just the right touch of smoke. Too many places do too much of a good thing. Desserts were amazing. Service was as good as anywhere I've ever been and certainly better than most."

  • "Working on the Oregonian's top 40 recommendations of Portland restaurants, we started here. We were thrilled with this choice. The portions were perfect for sharing (thank you to our server who pointed that out) and each item we ordered came wonderfully timed (so we didn't have 8 dishes all at once). Our group practically licked the plates, we enjoyed everything so much! We will return, even before we get through the top 40 list!"

  • "I really like the "Radish" cocktail, very tasty & inventive. We both split the kale salad and each had the trout for dinner. I love trout, and this one is among the best I've had! It was a great evening overall, and the staff was professional and friendly for the entire experience."

  • "My wife and I had no idea what to expect, but it exceeded our expectations. Great atmosphere and ambience. Very nice play for to have breakfast. Looking forward to trying the rest of the menu another time. Also the menu was wry reasonably priced for what your getting."

  • "Overall good experience at Imperial as always, however staff was unable to accommodate small child (age 3.5) with us as we were told they were completely sold out of pasta, were unable to cut heads off of prawns prior to being served, etc. which was disappointing. I would expect a hotel restaurant to have better options for a family. Otherwise, food and wine for the adults were very good."

  • "Finally made it to the Imperial and wish I had gone sooner. Food was creative and fun and delicious. My friend and I shared several dishes and wanted more. The grilled radishes were divine as was the grilled romaine salad. We loved our entrees and had fresh raspberry/rhubarb pie for dessert. It was great and we'll be back. It may have been a little loud when we got there, but that was during happy hour, but after that, it was the normal restaurant noise and just fine."

  • "I try to get to Portland at least twice a year and Imperial is always my first dinner stop. Food is perfect with attention to detail. Drinks are the coolest with the hand cut ice cubes. Service is always outstanding. If you can make it for breakfast try the house cured bacon. Rick"

  • "I'm glad we reserved on OpenTable since it was busy with the walk-in lunch crowd. I had the half tuna salad sandwich which was delicious but it would have been great if it came with a small salad. My friends also had sandwiches and we split an order of fries that came with a great dipping sauce. I would order it again."
