A word from Imperia
Complemented by elaborate chandeliers, provocative murals, onyx stone panels and a golden Buddha statue, the restaurant's deep reds and dark woods bring to mind the pomp and polish of an imagined Hong Kong supper club. But the warm and friendly staff is purely Austin. Despite excessively dark corners, pristine padded booths and high-backed leather chairs, the pretty staff dispels any notion of caste systems with their conversation and genuine enthusiasm for the menu.

Complex and flavorful dishes, such as firecracker shrimp and pork belly steam buns, combine flavors popular in Southeast Asia, Japan, Thailand and other Pacific ports of call. The distinct flavors found in the steak and mushroom dish, sauteed in brown butter and tamari with a lobster zu and seasonal mushrooms, are reason enough to visit. Entrees such as Chilean sea bass glazed in Miso (it melts on your tongue), Peking Duck, and pan seared sea scallops are available for those seeking a full meal.

Diner Reviews
  • "The drinks are tasty, the food is delicious and the servers are great."

  • "Showed up and ordered appetizers and drinks as soon as we sat down. Took 30 minutes to get the drinks. Once drinks arrived someone ordered a roll. We finally got our food order in 45 minutes after we arrived and still had not received our appetizers. Edamame doesn't take 45 minutes to make. Once they finally brought the Edamame all of our food came out. Minus the first roll that was ordered at beginning of night and cucumber salads which came out last. I was excited about the red devil roll. Presentation was horrible. Looked like a mayonnaise bottle exploded on the plate and the actual roll was fishy. Very disappointing meal. I will not be going back. I should also note that it was not busy when we went. Only 5 tables in the restaurant."

  • "The food was average to good - the service was terrible!!!! We waited 20minutes for first round of drinks to arrive, which was just in time for the delivery of the appetizer and ALL of the other sushi we ordered - the table was sooo crammed, it was ridiculous!! The server acted as though she couldn't see it, despite her failed tetris-style attempt to place every single dish on the table at the same time!!! I expect more when we are presented with a $200bill - All-in-all it was a missed opportunity!!"

  • "Used to be a real nice sushi bar. Several months ago, Imperia split into two different names: Imperia and something else, stopping short of physically dividing the two spaces entirely. One side is the louder "club" side and the other side is the "restaurant". Consequently they killed the restaurant ambiance. (We sat on that side a month or so ago and this time we sat on the "club" side). Turns out this just means you get slower food while listening to music that's way too loud for a total of 5 people in 2400 sq ft. Sushi bar got moved to kitchen. Apps came out same time as rolls. To top it off, a woman making balloon animals was walking around to tables on both sides of the restaurant hustling for dollars at each table."

  • "The server was an untrained noob who did not even bring wasabi and ginger with a sushi order, then disappeared for 10 minutes. Honestly made an expensive meal disappointing."

  • "Top notch food with the freshest ingredients. Because I was here on business and was a party of 1, I sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chefs were very engaging. Very laid back and hip. Great spirits as well. Only drawback is you couldn't split a check...other than that. AMAZING"

  • "The food was very good, fresh fish! We had a reservation booked but were seated in the lounge at a couch that would seat 10 and had to eat off a table at knee level, not great for chop stick eating. Frankie, our server was what made the experience so much better and took our mind off the less than stellar seating. Marco"

  • "Food was more than excellent, service really sucked. We were seated and after 20min our server asked us to hold on even longer :( my date was upset because it seem they did not want to serve us and kept passing us through."

  • "The food was good, ordered the Peking Duck, it was basically cold when it made it to the table and I mean almost ice cold. Their combination rice was amazing, but again was barely warm. Service for a basically empty restaurant was very poor, long waits and didn't come back enough till close to the end of our meal. I would try it one more time, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there."

  • "My friends wife got her entree 10 minutes before we got 3 of our 4 sushi rolls that we were having for our entree. Around 10 minutes later our fourth sushi roll came out. We finished our sushi rolls and his wife finished her entree and had it in a BOX before we had to ask our waitress where my friends entree was. At this point she said "its almost out" but we said don't bother. The bar was also slow for a non busy night. It took 15 minutes to get our first drink. I had my third drink almost gone before I had to hand my two empty drink glasses to the waitress to take them away. However, the food was great. The sushi rolls were delicious. The timing, poor drink service, and lack of table clearing makes it an overall not-recommended place."

  • "We love Imperia! The sushi is always wonderful. Great choices, too. I love the ambience. Kind if sad that half the restaurant is now a night-club, but I quests that only makes it that much more interesting and adds variety. We'll have to try the other side one weekend."

  • "This is my favorite sushi place in Austin. The atmosphere is really nice. I really like the different seating areas and the varieties of sushi on the menu. We have been here many times and have enjoyed every experience. Great date-night spot."

  • "Got the bank and loved it. Best sushi at reasonable prices."

  • "It was a good place to eat, and i loved the atmosphere but I really disliked the fact how you could make reservations for dinner all the way up to 11pm but yet the kitchen closes at 11. I got out of work late and I wanted to have dinner with my friends but when I found out that we only had a couple minutes to order, i clearly felt rushed and wasn't able to enjoy the overall experience. Waitress was excellent though."

  • "Imperia was yummy! Fresh sushi...good service great atmosphere I had Tuna sashimi 5 nice size pieces very fresh. We also enjoyed the Spicy Roll which was was 8 pieces along with a large hot saki. I was very pleased and look forward to my next encounter with Imperia! Thanks I loved it!"

  • "We had the edamame with red peppers and prepared in a wok. It was excellent. We also had the Red Devil Roll which was excellent as well. The two other rolls we had were average. It took us forever to get our drinks, but they didn't charge us for those drinks. Overall it was a nice evening, but not outstanding."

  • "Took 3 clients there last Thursday night and they were very disappointed in the quality and selection. They were out of 4 of the 5 first things we ordered. Food was not worth the cost. The server was new and didn't have much knowledge of the menu. It was so bad that I am now sceptical of other options on Open Table. I can see me using Open Table less and less in 2014 out of concern that they don't hold their options to a higher standard. When I have to apologize all through the dinner it's an issue!"

  • "Overall good experience, kitchen a bit off in getting food out, and did not have table ready for group of 8 with a reservation. Food was fairly good and waiter attentive."

  • "I'm always notably timid of going downtown to have a nice dinner with my girl, but this is the 2nd time I've been here and I just dig the atmosphere and food. And who ever caters the music playlist know what's up!"

  • "We had taken some out of town guests from LA to Austin (from Houston) and wanted to be sure that they , and we, had a rewarding dining experience. Imperia did not disappoint. We had a mix of sushi and the Peking duck. all of which was excellent."

  • "I took my wife to Imperia as a surprise dinner for her pre-birthday, before going to see a play. The rating as "Austin's top Asian" was not wrong: the sushi, sashimi and delicate but flavorful whitefish skewers were delicate, fresh and of very high caliber. The service was an ideal match: Tracy was very helpful, funny without being intrusive, and made our dining experience a joy! And the huge fortune cookie which he arranged to celebrate my wife's birthday was a very mic touch! All and all, an exquisite evening -- we WILL return!"

  • "Though the menu does not include a "cheap item", everything I ate there tasted fantastic. The fish was fresh and the waiter seemed to know his stuff and made some great suggestions. Went on a Monday night and had great service, I could imagine the restaurant being loud on a weekend. Overall I had a great experience and great meal"

  • "Went here on a whim. Went early too, sat at the sushi bar and had a great experience with the attention of 3 sushi chefs. The salmon was only ok but the albacore was spectacular."

  • "We were visiting the area and we're so happy we found this amazing place! They had awesome food! We were not disappointed in anything we ordered."

  • "Every piece of sushi/sashimi/roll we ordered was fresh and delicious. We also took the waitress' advice and ordered the spicy edamame...fantastic (but very hot so beware). The waitress was so friendly and very accomodating, even when I accidentally dropped a glass. Loved the whole experience and I would definitely go back."

  • "The food at the restaurant was only average and the prices were too high. Although beautifully presented, food was on the cold side. Will not go there again."
