A word from Imperia
Complemented by elaborate chandeliers, provocative murals, onyx stone panels and a golden Buddha statue, the restaurant's deep reds and dark woods bring to mind the pomp and polish of an imagined Hong Kong supper club. But the warm and friendly staff is purely Austin. Despite excessively dark corners, pristine padded booths and high-backed leather chairs, the pretty staff dispels any notion of caste systems with their conversation and genuine enthusiasm for the menu.

Complex and flavorful dishes, such as firecracker shrimp and pork belly steam buns, combine flavors popular in Southeast Asia, Japan, Thailand and other Pacific ports of call. The distinct flavors found in the steak and mushroom dish, sauteed in brown butter and tamari with a lobster zu and seasonal mushrooms, are reason enough to visit. Entrees such as Chilean sea bass glazed in Miso (it melts on your tongue), Peking Duck, and pan seared sea scallops are available for those seeking a full meal.

Went to Imperia for dinner with my daughter Sunday evening. She was in the mood for sushi so we ordered and shared three rolls -- 4138 (tempura shrimp and avocado, topped with seared tuna and salmon with spicy peanut sauce), A Hot Mess (snow crab and shrimp on a honeyed avocado roll, served baked), and a California Roll. All three were good, though my personal favorite was A Hot Mess. Excellent. For dessert, my daughter got the sticky Banana Bread wrapped in banana leaves with melted caramel and a side dish of ice cream. She was nice enough to let me have a bite it, too, was excellent. Only quibble was that they had run out of lump crab meat the night before so I couldn't get the Lump Crab Summer roll. Overall, good food, good service.

The wife and I decided to hit Imperia the other night and I was pretty disappointed. The food dishes were average and nothing really got me too excited. The biggest thing that sticks out to me is how poor the service was. We must have waited a good 10 minutes to be served water and the rest of the experience was pretty poor. A couple at a table near us stormed out and I heard the woman say "they did this to me last time. This place sucks!!". And the restaurant was half full. I would hate to see what would happen on a busy night. Bad service can really ruin an experience.

I've been trying to find a great sushi place in Austin and had hopes for this place, but was mistaken. The sushi is okay. I would add that for the quality and diversity of the menu it's somewhat overpriced.

I was very happy to note that the restaurant has vegetarian options. The Vegetarian sushi, however, was not flavorful and was just alright. I would highly recommend complimenting the appetizer menu with veggie options like a cheese rangoon and improving the vegetarian sushi menu.

The rolls we ordered were great, as was the sushi. However, we tried to order two things on the menu, Peking duck and Pork belly sliders, that they were out of. They did comp my wife's entree because of that though, so that was cool. I ordered the steak and mushrooms, I was not asked how I wanted my steak cooked, and it came out almost well done. The steak itself wasn't bad, and actually the lobster sauce was excellent, but it was just over cooked. My wife got scallops and cauliflower and the scallops had absolutely no flavor to them whatsoever. The bottle of sake we got, which admittedly was their cheapest one because the one we normally get at other sushi places was twice as expensive as it normally is, was horrible.

Imperia did a great job accommodating my party of 7 for my 27th birthday. The place looks great and the server, Frankie, was fantastic. She was also the bartender and took care of our rambunctious crew. We had our own private room in the back and everything we ordered came out fairly quickly. Sake was delicious, try the almond joy. The sashimi dishes are the way to go, and the duck is always fantastic. Some rolls are OK/good. Half baked cookie is killer. Good music in the house too! Only negative is that I have eaten a lot of sushi and this was probably one of the poorer nigiri sushis that I have eaten. Rice was not sticky enough, lots of it given with a thin cut of fish. Taste was still OK, but there's better sushi out there.

Handed the phone to my friend and told him to pick a place, originally he thought it was a place he'd been before - but upon arrival we realised neither had visited Imperia before. I'm super happy that we went! The inside is neat, service was great, and food was wonderful! Definately going back in the future.

I booked a table here online before a girls night out. We are not from the area. I scored big with this one. The only problem was that I made a reservation and they didn't have a table for us. I believe they gave it to a bachelorette party who came in before us unknowingly. Therefore they put us in a back room. Great food though.

I came to Imperia because I had purchased a Groupon and I hadn't been before. I looked at their menu, and being only interested in sushi rolls, I wasn't overly impressed by the menu, the rolls sounded weird. We ordered 4 rolls and was pleasantly surprised! 3 of 4 were AMAZING and 1 was so-so. I expected to like the Mano Tango the most and it ended up being my least favorite (no flavor at all) but the Spicy Tuna and Spicy Yellow Tail were both amazing and best of all was the Pablo Escolar. No part of that roll appealed to me, but my boyfriend wanted it and it was AMAZING. I would highly recommend! The atmosphere was nice, we had a good time, enjoyed the food, and would go back again! Oh, and we had a very attentive server!

The restaurant itself was very good. Our waitress was fantastic. She knew the menu forwards & back, & had some great recommendations. The food itself was not the best sushi I've ever had, but still definitely worth the trip. The sake selection was great as well. The noise level was very low and the lighting soft & romantic. Overall, a great date night out.

Showed up and ordered appetizers and drinks as soon as we sat down. Took 30 minutes to get the drinks. Once drinks arrived someone ordered a roll. We finally got our food order in 45 minutes after we arrived and still had not received our appetizers. Edamame doesn't take 45 minutes to make. Once they finally brought the Edamame all of our food came out. Minus the first roll that was ordered at beginning of night and cucumber salads which came out last. I was excited about the red devil roll. Presentation was horrible. Looked like a mayonnaise bottle exploded on the plate and the actual roll was fishy. Very disappointing meal. I will not be going back. I should also note that it was not busy when we went. Only 5 tables in the restaurant.

The food was average to good - the service was terrible!!!! We waited 20minutes for first round of drinks to arrive, which was just in time for the delivery of the appetizer and ALL of the other sushi we ordered - the table was sooo crammed, it was ridiculous!! The server acted as though she couldn't see it, despite her failed tetris-style attempt to place every single dish on the table at the same time!!! I expect more when we are presented with a $200bill - All-in-all it was a missed opportunity!!

Used to be a real nice sushi bar. Several months ago, Imperia split into two different names: Imperia and something else, stopping short of physically dividing the two spaces entirely. One side is the louder "club" side and the other side is the "restaurant". Consequently they killed the restaurant ambiance. (We sat on that side a month or so ago and this time we sat on the "club" side). Turns out this just means you get slower food while listening to music that's way too loud for a total of 5 people in 2400 sq ft. Sushi bar got moved to kitchen. Apps came out same time as rolls. To top it off, a woman making balloon animals was walking around to tables on both sides of the restaurant hustling for dollars at each table.

My friends wife got her entree 10 minutes before we got 3 of our 4 sushi rolls that we were having for our entree. Around 10 minutes later our fourth sushi roll came out. We finished our sushi rolls and his wife finished her entree and had it in a BOX before we had to ask our waitress where my friends entree was. At this point she said "its almost out" but we said don't bother. The bar was also slow for a non busy night. It took 15 minutes to get our first drink. I had my third drink almost gone before I had to hand my two empty drink glasses to the waitress to take them away. However, the food was great. The sushi rolls were delicious. The timing, poor drink service, and lack of table clearing makes it an overall not-recommended place.

Took 3 clients there last Thursday night and they were very disappointed in the quality and selection. They were out of 4 of the 5 first things we ordered. Food was not worth the cost. The server was new and didn't have much knowledge of the menu. It was so bad that I am now sceptical of other options on Open Table. I can see me using Open Table less and less in 2014 out of concern that they don't hold their options to a higher standard. When I have to apologize all through the dinner it's an issue!

The food was good, ordered the Peking Duck, it was basically cold when it made it to the table and I mean almost ice cold. Their combination rice was amazing, but again was barely warm. Service for a basically empty restaurant was very poor, long waits and didn't come back enough till close to the end of our meal. I would try it one more time, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.
