A word from Il Violino
Il Violino was established in 1993 by the Mariani family. They are from Villa Santa Maria, a little town in the heart of Italy (Abruzzo) known as La patria dei cuochi (chefs from this town have been executives at the Vatican, the White House, embassies and top restaurants and cruise lines around the world). Il Violino has been one of the original Lincoln Center Italian restaurants and, in these days, one of the few still in operation.
The chef Vincenzo Mariani, formerly the executive chef at Monsignore (one of the top restaurant in New York City in the 70’s and 80’s), leaded the kitchen with his international experience and created an original and innovative Italian menu.
In 2009 the owner, with the help of his young cousin from Venice, decided to write a new page. The restaurant has been renovated and transformed into a Trattoria: a warmer and cozier ambiance, one of those that you can easily find in any small town in Italy.

We'd hope to find a spot near Lincoln Center with that would draw us back frequently, but this didn't fit the bill. My orichiette was nice, and my husband's pasta with clam sauce was satisfactory, but our friend said his pasta with tomato sauce tasted a little like Chef Boyardee. Perhaps it had to do with the fact that we arrived at 9:30 after a showing of Gone Girl up the block meant that the regular chef had gone home. I think we might try it again on our own and order the simplest of pasta dishes because the pasta itself is nice and fresh.

For years we passed by over and over saying "we should go there" and somehow didn't. What a shame, we were so missing out. This is a wonderful neighborhood find, very reasonable prices for a good atmosphere, great service, and delicious food (the black truffle risotto was superb!). We aren't into the fishbowl dining of floor to ceiling glass on the sidewalk, but the interior space was great, if limited.

A friend of mine suggested me this restaurant as it was close to Lincoln Center! We were greeted by a woman who didn't seemed to be happy that we were 15 mins early for our reservations, we were seated prompted thou! Wine I had heard that they had a good negroamaro, but it was only 40% negroamaro grapes, somehow it doesn't fit for my taste! Penne vodka tasted like from a jar, gnocchi was to salty, my scampi was ok! The waiter approach was to take the order to serve the food and when he approached next to me he smelled to cigarettes and that was not very helpful right there! He never came to ask how was the food till we had finished! The menus also presented in a plain sheet of paper, surprise me that they have being in business that long

The fixed price lunch at Il Violino is not only a bargain, it is quite good. There is the choice of several pastas (the penne with vodka sauce is excellent), two chicken choices (piccata and marsala) and broiled salmon. The $19 includes a glass of red or white wine, entrée and coffee or tea. Considering that most places in the neighborhood charge $9 for a glass of wine, this is an excellent prix fixe lunch. And the waitress and entire staff are friendly and attentive. And I understand the brunch and dinner are also excellent.

Go ahead and skip Fiorello's, Lincoln, and Boulud: Il Violino's the place to go before seeing theatre, opera, or ballet at Lincoln Center. The prix-fixe menu is reasonably priced and offers some of their best entrees. For a special treat, get the spinach ravioli. They also has the best calamari in Manhattan. This is a true UWS gem and some of the best Italian food I've ever had outside of Italy.

We arrived 10 minutes late on a rainy night; our table had been given away. We waited for about 10 minutes in the cramped doorway until another table became available. We sat near the window, which also is a very cramped area, with a narrow aisle between two rows of small tables. My endive salad was delicious but the spaghetti with my chicken parm was gummy. My husband enjoyed his tomato and mozzarella followed by lasagna.

Carmen is always attentive to all the guests and always has a smile and friendly greeting when you walk through the door. We had not been back to Il Violino for several years and were looking forward to a delightful pre theatre dinner. The restaurant was barren and gloomy. The food was far from memorable. I ordered a shrimp dish that was unappetizing and "mushy". My husband's chicken was undercooked and hard. We did not order dessert and coffee. We left as soon as we finished our main course and do not intend to return.

Had lunch here before a Lincoln Center matinee. Food was good, nothing special. They do have a very reasonable lunch special - $19 soup or salad, an entree, glass of wine & coffee or tea. You can't beat the price but personally, I'd rather spend more elsewhere and have more interesting food.

Perhaps on Monday thru Thursday with a pre-theater special ($35) it wouldn't be too bad, but to pay almost $100 for a dinner for two in this tiny restaurant where you are so cramped in as they try to rake in more by putting tiny tables up against each other, so you're part of every conversation around you, that's just not right. Well-intentioned waiter brought whiskey when I asked for a whiskey manhattan, told me I would not be billed for the former, but when the check came I was billed for a scotch! Food was fine but you're bumped throughout your meal by waiters and patrons trying to negotiate a tiny aisle between tables. You can't even get in and out of the door without effort. Remove a few tables for a pleasant dining experience.
