A word from Il Violino
Il Violino was established in 1993 by the Mariani family. They are from Villa Santa Maria, a little town in the heart of Italy (Abruzzo) known as La patria dei cuochi (chefs from this town have been executives at the Vatican, the White House, embassies and top restaurants and cruise lines around the world). Il Violino has been one of the original Lincoln Center Italian restaurants and, in these days, one of the few still in operation.
The chef Vincenzo Mariani, formerly the executive chef at Monsignore (one of the top restaurant in New York City in the 70’s and 80’s), leaded the kitchen with his international experience and created an original and innovative Italian menu.
In 2009 the owner, with the help of his young cousin from Venice, decided to write a new page. The restaurant has been renovated and transformed into a Trattoria: a warmer and cozier ambiance, one of those that you can easily find in any small town in Italy.

The fixed price lunch at Il Violino is not only a bargain, it is quite good. There is the choice of several pastas (the penne with vodka sauce is excellent), two chicken choices (piccata and marsala) and broiled salmon. The $19 includes a glass of red or white wine, entrée and coffee or tea. Considering that most places in the neighborhood charge $9 for a glass of wine, this is an excellent prix fixe lunch. And the waitress and entire staff are friendly and attentive. And I understand the brunch and dinner are also excellent.

Go ahead and skip Fiorello's, Lincoln, and Boulud: Il Violino's the place to go before seeing theatre, opera, or ballet at Lincoln Center. The prix-fixe menu is reasonably priced and offers some of their best entrees. For a special treat, get the spinach ravioli. They also has the best calamari in Manhattan. This is a true UWS gem and some of the best Italian food I've ever had outside of Italy.

For standard reliable fare, this is the place. Nothing nouveau or trendy here, just very nicely prepared Italian dishes served in ample portions by friendly servers. Their pastas are made here and cooked to your liking and should accompany any entree to enhance the dish.

We arrived 10 minutes late on a rainy night; our table had been given away. We waited for about 10 minutes in the cramped doorway until another table became available. We sat near the window, which also is a very cramped area, with a narrow aisle between two rows of small tables. My endive salad was delicious but the spaghetti with my chicken parm was gummy. My husband enjoyed his tomato and mozzarella followed by lasagna.

Imagine family-style home-cooked ambrosia. I was presented with a pasta cooked in paper with a scallops, mussels and octopus sauce (almost a stew) that confirmed Il Violino's reputation for seafood.

I walked by for years and never went in because the crowd tends to be over 60. Went when family was visiting. Food was excellent. WInes very reasonably priced. I've been twice now this month and everyone loved the food. Service is very efficient as well. Recommend for a family night, quiet night, or when you just want really good Italian. Not a hot spot though.

Once again it was great to be there. The food is great and the service is always top notch. Carmen is always attentive to all the guests and always has a smile and friendly greeting when you walk through the door. Roberto, the owner, always walks over to the table and shows real concern for the enjoyment of his guests. It's always great and I will keep going back time and time again. You know the place is special because you always see a large number of the regular repeat guests.

Wonderful restaurant near Lincoln Center. Had not been there in several years and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. It was always a " good choice" but now it is an "excellent choice." Great service and the selections were just fabulous. We were seated at a table by the window in the front and it was so much fun. Will definitely be back!

We had not been back to Il Violino for several years and were looking forward to a delightful pre theatre dinner. The restaurant was barren and gloomy. The food was far from memorable. I ordered a shrimp dish that was unappetizing and "mushy". My husband's chicken was undercooked and hard. We did not order dessert and coffee. We left as soon as we finished our main course and do not intend to return.

She always pays special attention to insure you are enjoying your dinning. The staff is attentive and the service is top notch. It's a great place and the fact that so many of the guests are loyal local residents of the neighborhood attests to the great food and service. Had lunch here before a Lincoln Center matinee. Food was good, nothing special. They do have a very reasonable lunch special - $19 soup or salad, an entree, glass of wine & coffee or tea. You can't beat the price but personally, I'd rather spend more elsewhere and have more interesting food.

Perhaps on Monday thru Thursday with a pre-theater special ($35) it wouldn't be too bad, but to pay almost $100 for a dinner for two in this tiny restaurant where you are so cramped in as they try to rake in more by putting tiny tables up against each other, so you're part of every conversation around you, that's just not right. Well-intentioned waiter brought whiskey when I asked for a whiskey manhattan, told me I would not be billed for the former, but when the check came I was billed for a scotch! Food was fine but you're bumped throughout your meal by waiters and patrons trying to negotiate a tiny aisle between tables. You can't even get in and out of the door without effort. Remove a few tables for a pleasant dining experience.

Il Violino never disappoints. The service is always attentive and not overbearing, that bar staff is friendly and quick (we usually arrive a few minutes before our reservation so we can sit at the bar for a drink). On this visit we had friends with us who have spent time in Italy and they were impressed by the quality of the fresh pasta, the menu selections and the cooperation of the chef to prepare each of our dishes to our own specifications. Our waiter, without aid of paper and pen was able to remember exactly, our changes to the dishes and they were presented exactly as ordered.

This is been my go-to choice for dinner whenever I have tickets for a performance at Lincoln Center for years. The hostess always seems slightly annoyed, but don't take it personally. The waiters are generally very good and attentive. You're not rushed, but you're also not sitting there nervous that you'll miss your show because your food is MIA. The food is reliably tasty (I don't want anything esoteric or too heavy that might not sit well before I go to the Ballet or the Opera) Pricing, especially for the area, is reasonable.
